Topic: General Discussion / Thank goodness for DAFNE and sick day rules I have been pole-axed by a horrible virus leaving me with a throat and ear infection.I have now had two positive ketone tests (last one was +++). I used the DAFNE sick day rules and so far it's ketones nil: me 2. I haven't had to go to A and E and, more importantly A and E hasn't had to see me. Thank goodness for DAFNE. If anyone doubts the value of the course here is a good example of that value! Still struggling with BG, though. Last test was 18.7.... |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Corn on the cob Put simply, because of corn being high in fibre your body doesn't really digest or make use of a lot of the carbs in corn (carrot etc), hence the reason you'll often see these foods in the toilet, often fully in tact! Sorry for being so explicit!![]() |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Corn on the cob Corn on the cob is a high fibre source of carbs, so it takes longer to feed through to your BG levels. I notice mine are higher 4-5 hrs later when I eat low GI foods |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / white rice Hi,if this is rice you're eating at home, I suggest you weigh it dry before cooking - and after, this will allow you to adjust for the water content and have a more accurate estimate of the CP count. Once you've done this a few times you should be better able to estimate the CP count visually or be weiging it once after it's been cooked |

Topic: General Discussion / Diabetic Burnout What are your target levels? I see a 10.5 in green, and a 6.9 in blue which suggests that you have much higher targets than DAFNE recommends. For instance, for myself, my targets most of the time are between 4.5 and 7.5 so in my diary, anything below 4.5 would be blue, between 4.5 and 7.5, green, and above 7.5, red.If you need one-on-one help, I'd suggest talking to http://integrateddiabetes.com/ as they would likely be very helpful. It is a service with a cost though. All of your levels look higher than I would want myself, so my suggestion is to increase your BI by 2 units, and seeing what that does over a period of three days or so. Monitor a little more regularly for hypos following the increase in BI and let us know how you go. |

Topic: General Discussion / insulin I think I may have to up the Levemir to 20 instead of 19 and see how that goes, I just didn't really want to up it because the diabetic nurse thinks I'm on to much insulin for my body weight but maybe I need a little bit more than they think. |

Topic: General Discussion / Diabetic Burnout Here are my last lot of BGs. I'm still going through this burnout. I'm suffering with stress due to house moving. I really need encouragement |

Topic: General Discussion / insulin I had similar problems and my diabetes nurse advised me to increase my evening Levemir by 2 units and that seems to have sorted me out.I think there are changes going on in our bodies all the time, so things are bound to go awry occasionally. |

Topic: General Discussion / insulin HiI'm on levemir and on split doses, when I did the dafne course I started on 7 in the morning and 12 at night then had to go up to 6 in the morning and 13 at night, I'm currently trying 5 in the morning and 14 at night and will see how that goes. |

Topic: General Discussion / insulin HiI have tested through the night and don't seem to be having hypos and it Doesn't seem to be dawn phenomenon as they raise any time during the night. I think I just need to get the split dose right as I don't really want to up the BI as I find this drops me during the day, it's just so frustrating! |

Topic: General Discussion / insulin Have you tested during the night? I did the DAFNE course in 2007, and a lot of effort was put into getting BI right - including testing during the night. I still do this if I think my BI needs adjusting (it used to be really tedious, but now as I get older waking up during the night seems to be an increasingly common occurrence).Sometimes a high morning BG can be an indicator of a night-time hypo, or be a result of the dawn phenomenon. A few "during the night" tests will help to clarify whether it is either of these, or whether it is "simply" (as if anything is ever simple!) bodily changes requiring more BI. |
