Topic: General Discussion / Hot Tubs Warwick, thanks for your reply and advice I will take it on board. of course I now recall from the DAFNE course that heat can effect absorption of insulin and I found when on holiday I needed to reduce my BI doses as the temp was usually 30 degrees each day and I more hypo's than usual. so of course the same would apply in a hot temp as the temp is 38degrees and we have been sitting in it for around an hour at a time. I will always check my BG before and after and reduce my time in there.thanks again, Sarah |

Topic: General Discussion / Hot Tubs Heat tends to make insulin work faster. I sometimes find that a hot shower will drop my BGLs quicker than I was expecting, but it doesn't always happen. Whether it would make your BGL decrease rapidly would depend largely on how much insulin you had on board. If you had just had a large dose of carbs and had taken a large amount of insulin to cover it, then you may find that your BGL would decrease quicker than usual. But you may not too. Everyone responds differently to different external factors and external heat can be one that affects some but not others. Just be careful, and test a little more regularly to see if your BGL is affected or not when in a hot tub. |

Topic: General Discussion / Hot Tubs I recently heard that Type 1 Diabetics should not use hot tubs as it can cause our BG to decrease quite rapidly, is this true?Had anyone else experienced this? Sarah |

Hi. Reading your initial post it seems that the GP is changing the prescription as the test strips are no longer manufactured and would in that case have to change your meter which if five years old may well be the case. The GP can't prescribe strips that are no longer made. However as others have said if you contact your team at the hospital there are various blood glucose monitors on the market that have the bolus calculator function and it's a matter of getting a new meter from your team and prescription for test strips to match the new blood glucose monitor. I'm not based in UK but assume it works the same as Ireland?? |

Oh yes, definitely speak to your hospital team if no one else. Even a Diabetes Specialist Nurse will trump the GP decision every time. They only care about saving money usually. Best wishes! |

Topic: General Discussion / no pancreas What dose if Creon do you take 10,000 units or 25,000units?I take 25,000units x3-4 for upto 10 CP, then 25,000x2 for snacks. Do you use Dafne principles for your Novorapid? Prior to DAFNE my BG were all over one minute 15 then couple of hours later a hypo. After attending Dafne and applying principles my BG is getting better. And by trial and error with Creon I came up to my normal dose for 10 CP, Plus we have to remember we can't have big meals.... |

Topic: General Discussion / no pancreas Thanks for reply. I'm interested in the idea that the Creon dose may influence the BG level. At the moment I'm taking 4 Creon and 5 units of Novorapid at breakfast, 6 Creon and 6 units at lunch, and 6 Creon and 8 units at dinner. My BG levels average about 6-8 at breakfast and lunch, but are up around 9-12 at dinner and bedtime. Does this match any of your readings? And how many Creon do you find make how much difference? I have found that my diabetes nurse is not sure about Creon doses, and my dietician is not sure about Novorapid doses, which is why I'm looking for other people's experience. |

My GP tried this too, I rang up & explained that my diabetes control was good partly due to this machine. They agreed to leave my prescription for a while. I also asked my hospital nurse to mention in letter after next appointment, which she did. I've heard nothing from GP since. Stick to your guns! |

Topic: General Discussion / Accu-check Aviva Expert meter Hi,Sorry for the delayed response, xmas and all that ;-) Your GP should NOT be doing this, it is NOT NHS policy . If you are a member of Diabetes UK I would contact them and or your local Clinical Commissioning Group ( CCG) and ask for an explanation. I don't know where you are in the country so its hard to give specific advice. Only Type 2 diabetics have the meter type they use 'imposed' on them not Type 1s. You should also be under a hospital to for your Diabetes check-ups so I would also contact them and explain what is going on. I have heard about this happening but not in my part of the UK ( South-East Kent) , its not acceptable and you don't have to accept it !! |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Viewing BG Graphs using DAFNE App on Android Phone Claire,Unfortunately the Android version of the App does not contain all the features of the iPhone version. The site is run by volunteers and one of the founders is an iPhone user who has developed the app on his own and continues to add new features to that version. A couple of years ago someone else volunteered to port the iPhone app to Android, and that's the version that is still used (by me as well). Unfortunately the original volunteer who undertook the port hasn't had the time to continue to make the same updates that have been applied to the iPhone version, so there is a growing difference between the capabilities of the two. This will continue unless someone else volunteers to update the Android version. In the meantime you can upload the data from the Android version to this site (there's an option to do this automatically) or in the entries list press and hold to the right of the power button and you will see a menu including the ability to upload data. Note this is also useful if you have no wi-fi/3G/4G connection when adding data in the app as it will fill in any gaps on the "server". Once the data is loaded to the site you can view it through the DAFNE Tools/My Blood Glucose Diary menu option at the top of the page. The graphical options appear after the data is listed. If that's not good enough, the final option is to export the data from the site in csv format and load it into Excel where you can produce your own graphs. Hope that helps. Peter |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Centre code Sorry - I didn't answer your first question: I think your status would be 'User' rather that 'Graduate', but I don't think it would restrict your access. |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Centre code When signing up I didn't enter a centre code although I do actually have one. Does this affect my level of access to the site's resources? If so is there a way I can go back? |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Viewing BG Graphs using DAFNE App on Android Phone Hi all,I am new to this site, having completed my DAFNE training just last week. Whilst we were at the course a few of us downloaded the DAFNE app on our mobile phones and I have been playing around with mine lately. One thing I have realised is that I can't seem to find where you view the BG diary entries as a graph? The others in the group had iphones and seemed to have no issues but having downloaded the app to my Samsung Galaxy S6 android phone, I just can't seem to find where that option is! Any help would be greatly appreciated - many thanks ![]() Claire |

Topic: General Discussion / no pancreas I am a recent diabetic, with type 1 symptoms, but not the usual history. I had a pancreatectomy a year ago, which has caused the state. The difference in my case is that, without a pancreas, I have no digestive enzymes, and have to take Creon with every meal, so that the food is digested for the insulin to get to work on it. It makes life more complicated having three variables to juggle, rather than two. Is anyone else in the same situation? |

I've been using the Freestyle Libre over the last few months. I've had two failures -- once I think when I pushed the sensor in at an angle, and the needle must have bent, and another time when some of the plaster came away with the applicator. Although the needle was in on both occasions, the meter wouldn't read the sensor. On both occasions I rang Abbott (UK) and they agreed replace it, free. So my advice is to ring, and politely claim a replacement. I have also several times asked a friendly nurse to supervise me, and they seem very pleased to learn a new technique. Hope this helps. |

Hi, i finished my Dafne course around 5 years ago when i was given the accu-check aviva meter which i have been using since. Due to this being a meter with bolus, i have used it as my main meter on every day basis. My GP has recently advised they dont provide test strips for this meter anymore and have therefore changed my prescription. The meter they can provide hasnt got bolus facility. Any ideas how to get around this? If i want to use bolus as part of my diabetes treatment, do i need to start paying for aviva strips myself? Anyone had similar experiences? |

Topic: General Discussion / Campaigning Against Hospitals Dropping DAFNE This is just so sad and disappointing. Dafne was the first diabetes education I had in 22 years of being Type I. It is also the first time in 22 years that I have been shown any respect and compassion from medical professionals in treating my diabetes. After Dafne I changed from my local hospital to the Dafne clinic. I have to drive an hour to get to appointments - I don't care because I know I will be met with understanding, joint problem solving, accurate information and a compassionate attitude. Previously, I actually found it emotionally and psychologically traumatic to attend the diabetic clinic. I was chastised, criticised and treated like a four year old. It is not just diabetics that need education, but also the professionals who are dealing with them on a daily basis. A little basic psychology about how human beings respond to managing a long-term health condition would go a long way in clinics. Funding will always be an issue - this is something worth fighting for. |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Data input Hello,Firstly, at the top of the settings tab, is an " Online Credentials " tab. If you fill in your login details, then you have to tick " Diary Upload ", for it to upload to the online site, which should be just underneath the " Online Credentials ". It will do it every time you have a data / Wi - Fi connection, and have inputed a new entry Hope that helps Amy |
