Topic: Questions for HCPs / Changed from Lantus to Tresiba

I've only recently moved from lantus to tresiba. However my results have been positive. I use Freestyle libra all the time because I was always worried about night time hypos. With lantus, to get a reasonable morning time level, i tended to go low at about 3/4am. I changed to tresiba and my levels now seem to be flat throughout the night. Even the morning rise is less than before.
In terms of amount of insulin, I use exactly the same amount as i did with lantus.
I agee with becky, adjust your doses by 10-20% as guided by DAFNE until you are getting a flat response.
Now I find tresiba is flat, I have moved to taking my tresiba to about 7pm, rather than before going to bed, this has enabled me to improve my evening levels as well which always tended to rise. I suspect that was because of the lantus and tresiba were running out of steam.

Topic: Site Development / Any plans to serve pages over HTTPS?

Hi, Sorry I have already explained why we cannot get a certificate. A free certificate is not an option because free certificate providers are not in the trusted root certificates store in windows and have to be manually added. Sorry if this seems to be a bit blunt but I do work in IT and have involvement in security. I know how certificates and security work and get audited on these things every 6 months. If someone produces the cash I will be more than happy to do it. We did try to get financial help from Diabetes UK but they were not interested and the NHS don't have the ability to give us money unless we are a limited company which also means a load of financial costs. We run the site in our spare time with no money, This is not a sob story, we are happy to do it, we just have no financial resources.

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Samsung Galaxy 6 Edge DAFNE App problem

Hi Hughesy,

Did you find a solution to this problem?

I'm running the app on another Android device (a Vodafone Smart Prime) that doesn't have a menu button either. But if I click on "Entries" and then long-press on the Recents button it seems to act as a Menu button and the menu appears from the button of the screen allowing me to Download entries from the site.

Thanks Muncle

What Im trying to do is to correct over 200 dane diary entries. All of the entries have my Ratio (QA:CP) incorrect and the TYPES....these are all showing as BFAST

I would like to amend all of my DAFNE records to show the correct QA:CP ratios which changed at given points in time and also my correct BI which also changed.

I had hoped that there would be a feature to change multiple records at once, not just add multiple records at once using the "Click here to add multiple entries at a time" link ?

Why not a free certificate from https://letsencrypt.org/? Linode do support them.

My thoughts were just that as companies are moving more to flag up sites without HTTPS it might cause concern to users. Also, even though it's bad practice and everyone should know by now not to reuse passwords, the reality is that people do. So sending them over plain text...

Hello & welcome to the forum Darren, If you mean Diary entries then if you look below where it says "Add Diary Entry" then you will see "Click here to add multiple entries at a time" which will enable you to do about 7 entries very quickly. If you mean uploading from your tester or another source then I can't help you as I always log on and do my diary entries.

Cheers

Topic: Site Development / Any plans to serve pages over HTTPS?

Hi,
A fair point but... To switch to a HTTPS login we would need to buy a public security certificate which costs in the region of £150. We run the site in our spare time on a voluntary basis so don't really have the funds to spend that much on a certificate, If we could find some sponsorship to pay for it, it would be easier to do. We both work in IT and I am also partly involved in security so its not due to a lack of understanding, more a cash verses risk scenario, There should be almost zero personal information on the site so a password being hacked will expose very little information apart from email addresses. Whilst not saying this is not a risk, its not really sufficient to justify the costs......

Is there any current feature that would allow bulk uploads or bulk changes without doing these individually.

It is very frustrating to need to each revision "one at a time"

Topic: Site Development / Any plans to serve pages over HTTPS?

Given that Chrome and Firefox both now flag any site that takes usernames and passwords over HTTP as insecure (in the address bar and in a popover respectively), are there plans to move the site to HTTPS?

https://security.googleblog.com/2016/09/moving-towards-more-secure-web.html
https://support.mozilla.org/t5/Protect-your-privacy/Insecure-password-warning-in-Firefox/ta-p/27861

I'm assuming you are well aware of this. I'm just wondering if there are plans in place.

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / GI index

Thanks Warwick. I am not a vegetarian but as I get older I am eating less meat and more vegetables and pulses. I have definitely noticed my blood sugars rising overnight if I have a carbohydrate rich evening meal as compared to a low carb evening meal. As you say, it seems the food is still being digested after my evening QA has run out. I take NovoRapid which has a duration of 3-5 hours. Jenny

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / GI index

I'm vegetarian, so beans and pulses were a great source of protein prior to my T1D diagnosis, but I've cut right down on them as they affect my blood sugars horribly. They are very low GI, but I find that they are still increasing my BGLs many hours after my QA runs out. I can go to bed after a meal of beans/chick peas/lentils etc with BGLs in the target range and wake up in the morning with BGLs of 15-20.

I could probably get around it by only having them for lunch and having a correctional dose at dinner time for the anticipated spike. I could also switch to a different QA that is slower to work such as Humalin R, but I haven't really experimented with this.

Just posting in case you find the same.

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Samsung Galaxy 6 Edge DAFNE App problem

Hi, I got a new phone today a Samsung Galaxy 6 Edge, I managed to download it no problem from the play store.

Anyway I've logged on to it ok, updated my settings however there is no option when clicking into the entries section to download entries from remote site, on my previous phones I would hit the menu button and the following options would appear
Download, Upload, Food Groups, Alphabetic, Food Groups and more.

There is no option for these on hitting what appears would be the menu button!

Been a DAFNE app user for years now, does anyone have any ideas how to fix?

Many thanks

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / GI index

Congrats on Dafne, I found the same effect.

I found the “GI & GL counter” booklet published by Hamlyn quite useful when first diagnosed. I don't use it any more as I avoid high GI foods and know what to avoid.

I count carbs in “starchy” foods – e.g. potatoes, rice, bread, pasta, cereal, oats but not in vegetables when consumed along with starchy food and protein. I think if you don't have protein and increase the vegetable content to compensate you may have to allow for some carbs. But everyone is different, so you may need to find by trial and error what suits you. And some vegetables may affect you differently.

As for beans and pulses, if they are a main component of a meal e.g. beans-on-toast then I would count them. If they are part of a meal e.g. kidney beans in chilli or soup, then I tend to ignore or make a small adjustment based on relative ingredients, current levels, activity etc.

Hope this helps,
J

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / GI index

I did my DAFNE course last September and it has been life changing for me. After 30 years as a diabetic I am now making more informed decisions on my insulin doses and my control has definitely improved dramatically. However, I know i am still learning and one area that I am unsure about is the GI index of foods, specifically of vegetables. I certainly count the carbs in my potatoes but what about the carrots, marrow or cabbage etc. I have been told I don't need to count the carbs in pulses and beans but they do affect my blood sugar to a degree. I guess I need to learn more about GI index and if so, can you advise on a good source of information? Many thanks

All,
apologies for the problems with the site forums recently. As you can see if you are reading this , its all fixed and working again. Hopefully Simon will also get the alerts going to me as well when problems occur because although the error page said we had been informed that there was an issue, we had not been informed and had no idea that there was an issue.

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Suggestions for phone app

I've had the "carbs and cals" app recommended to me several times but it's not free.
Fitnesspal's app isn't too bad for carb information searching, especially with the bar code scanning feature, it just can be quite slow to use.

Otherwise, I just work out carbs using a calculator app, then again for working out the ratio result for the dose required. Some testing machines have this built in (such as the Accu-Chek Expert).

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Suggestions for phone app

Hi
I use the S Health app which came with my Samsung Galaxy S6 phone. It has searchable food items which is pretty comprehensive. You can even search for restaurant menu items I understand. It also allows you to add regularly eaten food items to a 'My Food' section which cuts down on the time taken to input the data. Once you have entered all your food for a particular meal it then summaries how much carbohydrate, protein, fat and other food groups are in your meal eg for lunch yesterday it calculated 85g. Divide by 10 to get CPs and then multiply by your conversion ratio to get the number of QI units to inject. For me, this comes to 10. Hope this helps.

Topic: General Discussion / BG METERS

Hello everyone,
I've just completed the amazing DAFNE course in Leicester
I'm interested in people's thoughts and recommendations about BG Machines.
I have now started using the DARIO maxhine and have to say it has to be the best and easiest machine to use and carry around.
Obviously this excludes the LIBRE only because the sensors aren't yet available on the NHS

Topic: General Discussion / "Diabetes set off course" Balance letter

Paul, that was brave of you to post your original message and I agree with most of what you say.
Like yourself I was trained to keep to a steady amount of CHOs a day to keep the metabolism steady.
The name of the course irritates me, Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating, as I think that everyone
particularly diabetics should be encouraged to eat the best possible diet they can, not to be
digging into handfuls of sweets and drinking diet coke whilst undergoing the course.
And all that testing would make your blood sugars rise.
We are all waiting for the day when there is no such thing as having to take
injections and do blood sugar testing, and being diapathetic. That day is drawing closer.
In my opinion, a normal diet is not a good idea for most people. What about the days
when you are feeling "wabbit"? What is easy and nutritious to eat then?
How about Dose Adjustment for Natural Eating?
