Topic: General Discussion / Ratios Hi,not sure about protocol of DAFNE educators joining discussions, so I apologise if it's not ok. Just feel that Sam's advice is good. usually wouldn't have less than a 1:1 ratio, so if you are still hypoing on these ratios and they aren't related to exercise etc, the first step to take would be to try reducing BI. You may then find that once hypos have stopped higher levels stop, or that you may need to increase some of your ratios (one at a time! and by 1/2 ie next step would be 1.5:1). I am sure your Dafne educator would also be happy to help. |

Topic: General Discussion / A wee story..... Hi AllAfter completing DAFNE my nurse wrote me out a prescription for Ketone test strips for my monitor which I handed into my GP. I later discovered that my GP removed my normal blood test strips and replaced it with the ketone test strips (they assumed one was replacing the other as similar name) which I could see why. Anyway when I spoke to the receptioist and the words blood glucose test strips came out my mouth she shouted over my voice saying "aye they've been removed now you've to come see the nurse to get you're blood checked once a year" I blurted out "WHAT" says who? receptionist - "the Health Board" well I nearlly had a heart attack, that's not possible I said I'm type 1 diabetic I need to reg check my BG plus I've attended DAFNE and they tell you to check"!! She then says "Oh that's okay it's type 2s"!! So has anyone heard that type 2s have now to go to the nurse to get their BG checked and that they will not be getting blood strips/monitors anymore? I certainly haven't heard on the news so I don't know what's going on there. Thought I'd share that!! Sam |

Topic: General Discussion / Ratios Don't want to sound like I'm causing a battle between folk giving you advice but if your BI was running out you would be having high BG not low, there's too much insulin in your body and you need to reduce you BI, again spilting your BI would be recommended if your readings were high as then you could say your BI is running out. The evidence shows it's your BI. I think you may end up being confused as to what does what.Sam |

Topic: General Discussion / Ratios I think a chat with your Dafne educator would be the most sensible action. However, reducing the number and frequency of the hypos should be the priority. I would suggest split the BI and reduce it (maybe 7 in the morning and 7 in the evening). There is evidence in your diary of the BI running out. You definitely need to reduce it. The multiple hypos are confusing the patterns. |

Topic: General Discussion / Ratios Hi MineshI'm looking at your results and thinkin mmm where are the problem BG, think back to the stepwise approach, monitor see a pattern make the change! I'm assumming you're on lantus or a 24 hour BI. Personally I think it's your background maybe reduce by 20-30%. You're only on a 1:1 ratio and it seems your climbing after your hypos because maybe your over correcting - too much lucozade? Are you eating extra CPs at night because you think you're going to hypo in the morning which could explain your high readings in the mornings from the 29th onwards. Hope that maybe helps you if in doubt speak to your nurse. Sam x |

Topic: General Discussion / New member Mmm sounds like you're having a time of it. Well if you think the pump will be better then go for it, reading on the site it seems the folk who do have one have never looked back. You've prob already been told this but you should get off the fags!! I used to smoke and when I was first diagnosed it took me a few months to come off them it was hard being told not to eat sugary stuff, inject and stop smoking but I have to say I did notice a difference in my BG. It's easier said than dine though so I won't lecture you lol!!Anyway 18CPs for your breakfast - what are you eating? I would have about 15CPs max for dinner cos it would be 30 units QA and even at that I feel is a lot! I know it's hard cutting back in CPs cos you feel you need to eat them but the benefits of cutting back are amazing as you will know from doing the course. I have just stuffed my face with a chinese for a treat, had a hypo before hand so I'll probably be chasing my BG for the rest of the night cos I don't know how many CPs are in a chicken ball!! Hope you don't think I've been a lecturer it is good to talk and share!! Chow Sam |

Topic: Site Development / Adobe Flashplayer I have been having the same problem. I tried last night to view my weekly graphs but couldn't. I did manage to download Adobe (which my husband says we already had anyway!) and it said it had been downloaded successfully but I still couldn't access the graphs. Have tried again tonight but with no success.Look forward to hearing if this is a problem on the site or how we can overcome it. Thanks. Karen |

Topic: Site Development / Adobe Flashplayer Hi I've been using the graphs and things for a while now and they've been easy to use and access and really useful.Today when I went in see how I did overall last week I didn't get a graph come up but got a message about Adobe Flash player. Is this something you've had to put in place so we can get all the functionality or is it the system overriding something? (sorry about the vagueness, I'm not very techy minded!) I did follow the link to try to download Adobe flash player but it kept harping on about the google toolbar and I couldn't find where to actually download Adobe. A bit frustrating and I still haven't managed to do my weekly review of results. Can you help/explain what I'm doing wrong? Many thanks. Liz |

Topic: Site Development / Graphs - now I can really see the difference Hi SimonThanks Simon. Its the percentage thing I'm interested in (I had the facility in the Excel spreadsheet I used before the online diary came along and I find I miss it). I think that a pie chart would complement the daily trend chart. Stew |

Topic: General Discussion / Needle Bins Hi AllI've recently just joined the site. Really interesting comments about this. Our nurse told us that Glasgow City Council have no interest in providing needle bins for diabetics and we have been told to snip the needles with a needle clipper put in a can and tape up and put in our normal bins. Apparantly drug addicts have more bebefits than we do. I think I will actually contact the council now and tell them what other areas do for diabetics. I see a potential battle wish me luck!! Sam |

Topic: General Discussion / New member Hi Steve - wow 7-10 injections that is a lot. I too correcting often. I've increased both my BI 2 units and see how I go with that, not keen to up my ratios when I'm already on 2:1. Going to get back into a routine of excercise so again don't want to make too many adjustments just now cos i'm hoping they will come down if I stick to a routine. So does the amount of injections qualify you getting a pump? What are the benefits to getting one? Here in Glasgow there is only so much funding so I'm wondering what you require in order to get one. Curious more than anything. I'm amazed at the amount of people that have type 1 and on this site share the same issues it's really comforting to know you're not alone. I had emailed the group I did the course with and from the responses I got some are doiny really well and others struggiling not haveing the HC professionals there to guide, I'll need to pass the message on and get them on here for guidence. I like the BG diary and graphs really good to see your patterns.Sam |

Topic: Site Development / Graphs - now I can really see the difference Hi Stew - sure thing, I'll work on this ASAP.One thought - the 'Daily Trend' chart gives some of what you ask for, e.g. showing where your average readings fall over the day - is this what you after, or was it more the percentages over/on/below target at different times during the day? Thanks, Simon |

Topic: Site Development / Graphs - now I can really see the difference Hi Simon,I'm really enjoying using the graphs and charts. Can I request another? Could the BG Targets (pie) chart be extended so that we can have a pie chart for specific types of entry (e.g one for "breakfast" one for "lunch" etc). It would be really useful in showing/comparing whether over time there are problems at specific points in the day. Thanks! Stew |

Topic: General Discussion / Introductions Hello Marke .. ok and thanks for that. I am hoping to encourage Nottingham QMC user group activity when time permits and pending other educator & graduate registrations. Have not yet thought through how best it can work in relation to the overall DO facilities. Also, by coincidence, I have just had a request from a dietician in Australia for a copy of the estimator form! Cheers, John |
