Topic: General Discussion / lumps Hi Steve,Pre-DAFNE I sometimes got small raised swellings when I injected. I was advised it could be due to where I was injecting and the fact that being a bit skinny I did not have much fatty area to inject into. I now inject in such wierd places, for me anyway, as under my arms rather on top (bingo wing area, for all the ladies out there!!), the sides of my stomach area rather than the front (love handles) and my upper inner leg rather than upper thigh. This has made a big difference. I also get stinging occasionally, another side effect of having less fatty tissue I think. I assume you always use a new needle for each injection, if not that may help? From your mentioning about the insulin absorbtion I would think you may be using the same sites too often and this is affecting your blood glucose. I certainly saw a difference when I started using the sites as described above. |

Topic: Site Development / Online BG Diaries Hi SimonJust wanted to say how useful the feature that allows you to set your own targets is. just back from my first holiday since my DAFNE course and decided to have slightly higher targets than the norm as I didn't want to hypo due to alcohol etc.. Its been really useful to input the data and see how I did instantly. Thank you |

Topic: DAFNE Graduate Group (DGG) / DAFNE user group first meeting Marke, Thanks for this and I am looking forward to getting more info once you have set up the User Group area. Seems that there is quite a big problem in getting all the DAFNE members coordinated. Best of luck.John |

Topic: General Discussion / "Balance" letter about injecting in public Hmmmm well, I too am a nurse AND a Diabetic. It amazes me how some of my colleagues can be so blinkered in their attitude. Sadly one of my colleagues is also a Diabetic and was given a telling off by one of our ward sisters for injecting in our coffee room (He took it higher and she had to apologise to him!). Luckily for me, I have never had this problem, I inject in public all the time, I am discreet about it, wont do it if a waitress is approaching for instance. My friends dont mind at all, and like other forum members I always make sure that, if there is someone in my company who has not seen me inject before doesnt have a needle phobia.I could really go on for hours about nurses attitudes towards Diabetes. From not knowing how to treat a hypo (seriously!) to being asked as I ate a bag of crisps whilst a patient on a ward if I was eating DIABETIC crisps? (Do you even get such a thing?) But thats for another forum........... |

Topic: General Discussion / Help, am panicking Hi Everyone,Last time I was at my Diabetic clinic I was advised that I would now be considered for an insulin pump because my control is awful even though I am doing my best for it not to be.I cant get my HbA1c below 9 and Im fed up and very frustrated not to mention feeling pretty dire. Tomorrow, I have my first meeting about the insulin pump with some consultant who is in charge of such things. I have heard that people are expected to jump through hoops to get a pump, and just wondered what other peoples experiences had been? I am utterly terrified about this meeting. I have wanted a pump for some time, but have never fit the criteria. Now I do, what if they say nope sorry youre not getting one? Ridiculous I know, but can anyone advise? Thanks Angela Type 1 Diabetic since 1974 Novorapid Lantus Freestyle Lite HbA1c - 9.7 |

Topic: General Discussion / Exercise and diabetic control I am planning to go surfing and need to plan carbohydrates so that I don't go hypo while in the sea. I don't know how long I shall be in the sea for and am thinking of ways to plan for this. Thank you to all who have promoted Gluotabs. I am thinking of putting either a pot of these or tubes of glucogel inside my wet suit to have to hand.Has anyone else tried surfing? What worked for you? |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Mushy Peas Does anyone know whether you need to count the CP value of mushy peas. I know from my DAFNE course that you do not need to count normal peas but wonder whether anyone knows if this is the same for mushy peas. When you look on the side of the can it says 10.9 grams of carbohydrate per 100g and there is sugar in them. Any ideas? Thanks Karen x |

Topic: Site Development / searching for fellow DAFNE graduates Hi shirley,This is a great idea - we've discussed creating an individual area for each DAFNE Centre, but hadn't got round to it until now - we'll start working on this now and hope to have something for you in the next few weeks. In the meantime - please feel free to post any ideas for things you'd like to see in this area. Thanks, Simon |

Topic: Site Development / searching for fellow DAFNE graduates I would love to see how my fellow graduates from my DAFNE course are getting on. Would it be possible to include a search box that would just show graduates from a particular hospital or DAFNE course in a future upgrade of the site? This would be better than trawling through all the usernames to try and find anyone from my group/area. |

Topic: DAFNE Graduate Group (DGG) / DAFNE user group first meeting john, sorry for the delayed reply even web admins take holidays ! Unfortunately, I suspect the answer currently is not much. The idea behind the User Group form is that it provides DAFNE Central with a database of DAFNE Graduates, until recently this was NOT done and therefore there are 12,000 DAFNE graduates that only the local centres have information about and no permission to share this data. The idea of the User Group is that it will help to shape the future of DAFNE. There will be more information about this in the coming months as the DAFNE User Action Group gets its act together. The DUAG is an elected body of people who will meet regularly to discuss DAFNE issues and will also attend the meetings of the various DAFNE research and executive groups. The DUAG is elected by the User Group and there was a very low turn out in the first election because we cannot contact the 12,000 to get their views and get their votes.I am a member of the DUAG and DAFNEOnline is seen as one of the key methods of getting information to the User Group. I intend to create a 'User Group' area of this site as soon as time permits it will contain details of what is happening in the group and DAFNE as a whole. Hopefully I will get this done in the not too distant future. I will also check with DAFNE Central if they have any plans to send the User Group any information in the near future. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Scales Just spoke to Nadine and she says.....OK I didn't but I did have a quick search and these were on the first link I found. Scales are 4.2cm x 6.2mm and only £14.99 which weigh up to 400g. There is another model for £9.99 that does up to 200g http://www.digitalscales2u.co.uk/Scale-Types/Supermini-Pocket-Scales/WORLDS-SMALLEST-DIGITAL-SCALE-Mini-Key-Ring-Scale--PP400SLV---p371.html Or see them all here: http://www.digitalscales2u.co.uk/Scale-Types/Supermini-Pocket-Scales--_c77/ NiVZ |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Scales I am also trying to source some 'mini' scales for the same reason. I read in a newspaper recently that Nadine Coyle from Girls Aloud was seen measuring a portion of fish on some portable scales in a restaurant so there must be some out there. Have tried scouring the Internet but have yet to find any. Wonder if anyone out there knows her well enough to ask where she got them from!!!!! |

Topic: General Discussion / Disposal of Humalog Kwikpens I use a flex pen for my actrapid insulin and I too put the empty pen in my normal bin. As there is no insulin in the pen and no needle I can't see this being a problem but if anyone knows any different please let us know.Thanks. Karen x |

Topic: Site Development / Can User lists topics be alphabetically listed? Hi Simon,Yeah, most meters use RS232 Serial to communicate. The Lifescan Ultra Easy uses lots of Hex commands to send and receive the data. Some of it is starting to make sense to me, but still got a bit to do. My degree in Computer Science is a big help ;-) Probably best to start another topic for this, or feel free to email me on my registered email address. NiVZ |

Topic: Site Development / Can User lists topics be alphabetically listed? Hi Nivz,This sounds interesting - I tried to do something similar but the means of extracting the data seemed quite obscure - maybe I was doing it wrong though. This kind of support for uploading direct from the meter would be greatly received I'm sure, I'll contact you via email to discuss further. Thanks Simon |

Topic: Site Development / Online BG Diaries Clare - this would be quite difficult to do I'm afraid, as everyone has different amounts of entries of different types in their diary view. You can specify the type of an entry in the input form when you add an entry, and the type is shown when the entry is displayed in your diary. Also, if you hover your mouse over the Blood Glucose reading itself, you will get a longer description of the type of reading.Sorry I can't be of more help here. Simon |

Topic: Site Development / Online BG Diaries Jess (and everyone),We've just rolled out an update which allows you to specify your own diary targets. You can access this via the link on the 'Add' form underneath your diary display. Could you let me know the advised targets for the 'after meal' types you mentioned, and I'll add them too. If you specify your own targets this is reflected in your Diary view, as well as any graphs which relate to targets. Let me know if you find any problems/would like any more enhancements. Thanks, Simon |

Topic: DAFNE Graduate Group (DGG) / DAFNE user group first meeting I probably haven't put this in the right place but I hope someone can answer my question. I attended a DAFNE follow up session in July and at the meeting we were given info about this site and also told about the DAFNE user group. I filled in the paperwork to join the User Group, sent it off but have heard nothing. So what should I expect. Can anyone help.Thanks. John |

Topic: Site Development / Can User lists topics be alphabetically listed? Hi Simon,I've recently been looking at writing my own program to download the BG readings from my Lifescan OneTouch UltraEasy to my PC. The specs for reading their meters are available online (for Ultra 2, Ultra Mini, UltraEasy, and I think UltraSmart) not sure if you can get the info from other manufacturers. I only figured this out last night, but I can now read the meter's Software Version, Serial Number and the number of BG readings currently stored. I just need to figure out now how to loop through reading all the individual BG dates and figures. The language I'm writing in can also interface with web forms to fill them out automatically. If I can figure it out, I should be able to read all the data from the meter and then call your "Enter multiple BG" page and automatically populate the fields. I'll keep you posted on progress, or if you're interested send me a PM and I'll give you more details of how I'm doing this. Thanks, NiVZ |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Scales I'm not recommending this, but... soon after completing DAFNE in Feb 2007, whenever my wife Tess and I visited our local social club I found myself staring at portions of chips trying to estimate CPs . On one visit I was doing my usual worried guesswork when Tess brought our digital scales out of her (capacious) handbag, scraped the chips off my plate and weighed them - sorted! |

Topic: Site Development / Graphs - now I can really see the difference We've just released an update to the graphs so that you can now compare two graphs of the same type. Whilst viewing a graph, click the 'Compare' link underneath the graph (above the date picking section) to view the Graph comparison screen. You can then choose different date ranges for the two graphs. We've given you handy links to quickly select to view graphs for your last 7,14, or 30 days (on the left), or the 7,14 or 30 days before the range displayed on the left hand graph. We've tried to make this as flexibile as possible whilst still easy to use - let us know if it can be improved at all, or if it looks wrong on your system. Thanks, Simon |

Topic: Site Development / Online BG Diaries I don't know how this would work...but when inputting my data whilst doing DAFNE I found it quite useful using the same column for breakfast, lunch, dinner and bed. At the moment (I think, I am a bit of a newbie with this) it just lists the day's tests. For example 9 times out of 10 the first column would be the breakfast test, but 1 in ten would be a 3am test or 3am hypo. Is there any way for the columns to be set? Many thanks, Clare |
