Topic: Site Development / Graphs - now I can really see the difference Hi Guys! I finally made the switch from my long-term use of an Excel spreadsheet to the online diary about a month ago. I have to say I really like it. I'm finding the graphs useful too, but can I make a request? How possible would it be as well as the combined graph to have separate trend graphs for breakfast, lunch, dinner and bed? I find that when I look at the combined graph its really difficult to make sense of what's happening as its a bit cluttered. Also, I'm preparing for a session with the practice nurse at my GP surgery (they seem to call me in every year despite my allocation to a consultant at our local hospital trust) and have tried to print off a couple of graphs to take with me. Interestingly they've come out reversed (as in "mirror" writing) - is there a way to make printing graphs as easy as printing the diary? Just to say again though, the online diary and current graphs are excellent! |

Topic: General Discussion / Help, am panicking Hello Angela,I have been using an Insulin Pump since the end of May and think that is absolutely fantastic. Along with the information I gathered from the DAFNE course, I now feel fully engaged with the way I control my diabetes and relish the challenge of getting my BGs on track throughout the day. I was offered a pump after the DAFNE course and doubt that I would have had any chance of using one without doing DAFNE. Of course, using a pump is not for everyone - you can always go back to regular injections if you cannot get on with the pump regime but in my view it is well worth a trial providing you are happy to keep up regular BG measurements and don't have a job or any other daily activity which would preclude you wearing a pump. (It can be removed for up to one hour at a time but to be honest, I only ever remove it when having a shower - I play squash every week with it in my shorts pocket rather than remove it). If you are being offered the chance of trying out an Insulin pump, take it but be prepared to pay to have it on your house insurance - they cost in the order of £3,000 - and to take regular BG measurements as I have said. My health trust made it pretty clear to me that it is MY choice rather than theirs provided I fulfilled their criteria which effectively meant being "switched on" in terms of understanding diabetes control and being prepared to follow the rules. Hope this helps but please come back if you have any questions. Alan |

Topic: General Discussion / If you're unable to log in, let us know ASAP Hi,Recently we found a problem with the site, where nobody was able to log in. Obviously this was a large problem as nobody was able to update their diary/post on the forums/look up CPs and so on, which is a great problem for the team. First of all, apologies for any of you who tried to log in earlier this week and couldn't - we have now fixed the problem. This was caused by our web hosting company updating some software which broke the site. We were able to fix it mid-afternoon Friday after some users brought it to our attention. Secondly, an appeal - if you do try to log in to the site and receive an error page, then contact us straight away at [email protected] letting us know the problem and the time it occurred. Note if you are using an incorrect username/password, the site will tell you this specifically. This point also applies if you find some part of the site working in a strange or unexpected way - chances are you are not the only person to notice this. We ask this because we can only fix those problems which we know about, and want to make DAFNE Online the best it can be. Thanks, Simon |

Topic: General Discussion / lumps Hi Steve,Pre-DAFNE I sometimes got small raised swellings when I injected. I was advised it could be due to where I was injecting and the fact that being a bit skinny I did not have much fatty area to inject into. I now inject in such wierd places, for me anyway, as under my arms rather on top (bingo wing area, for all the ladies out there!!), the sides of my stomach area rather than the front (love handles) and my upper inner leg rather than upper thigh. This has made a big difference. I also get stinging occasionally, another side effect of having less fatty tissue I think. I assume you always use a new needle for each injection, if not that may help? From your mentioning about the insulin absorbtion I would think you may be using the same sites too often and this is affecting your blood glucose. I certainly saw a difference when I started using the sites as described above. |

Topic: Site Development / Online BG Diaries Hi SimonJust wanted to say how useful the feature that allows you to set your own targets is. just back from my first holiday since my DAFNE course and decided to have slightly higher targets than the norm as I didn't want to hypo due to alcohol etc.. Its been really useful to input the data and see how I did instantly. Thank you |

Topic: General Discussion / "Balance" letter about injecting in public Hmmmm well, I too am a nurse AND a Diabetic. It amazes me how some of my colleagues can be so blinkered in their attitude. Sadly one of my colleagues is also a Diabetic and was given a telling off by one of our ward sisters for injecting in our coffee room (He took it higher and she had to apologise to him!). Luckily for me, I have never had this problem, I inject in public all the time, I am discreet about it, wont do it if a waitress is approaching for instance. My friends dont mind at all, and like other forum members I always make sure that, if there is someone in my company who has not seen me inject before doesnt have a needle phobia.I could really go on for hours about nurses attitudes towards Diabetes. From not knowing how to treat a hypo (seriously!) to being asked as I ate a bag of crisps whilst a patient on a ward if I was eating DIABETIC crisps? (Do you even get such a thing?) But thats for another forum........... |

Topic: General Discussion / Help, am panicking Hi Everyone,Last time I was at my Diabetic clinic I was advised that I would now be considered for an insulin pump because my control is awful even though I am doing my best for it not to be.I cant get my HbA1c below 9 and Im fed up and very frustrated not to mention feeling pretty dire. Tomorrow, I have my first meeting about the insulin pump with some consultant who is in charge of such things. I have heard that people are expected to jump through hoops to get a pump, and just wondered what other peoples experiences had been? I am utterly terrified about this meeting. I have wanted a pump for some time, but have never fit the criteria. Now I do, what if they say nope sorry youre not getting one? Ridiculous I know, but can anyone advise? Thanks Angela Type 1 Diabetic since 1974 Novorapid Lantus Freestyle Lite HbA1c - 9.7 |

Topic: General Discussion / Exercise and diabetic control I am planning to go surfing and need to plan carbohydrates so that I don't go hypo while in the sea. I don't know how long I shall be in the sea for and am thinking of ways to plan for this. Thank you to all who have promoted Gluotabs. I am thinking of putting either a pot of these or tubes of glucogel inside my wet suit to have to hand.Has anyone else tried surfing? What worked for you? |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Mushy Peas Does anyone know whether you need to count the CP value of mushy peas. I know from my DAFNE course that you do not need to count normal peas but wonder whether anyone knows if this is the same for mushy peas. When you look on the side of the can it says 10.9 grams of carbohydrate per 100g and there is sugar in them. Any ideas? Thanks Karen x |

Topic: Site Development / searching for fellow DAFNE graduates Hi shirley,This is a great idea - we've discussed creating an individual area for each DAFNE Centre, but hadn't got round to it until now - we'll start working on this now and hope to have something for you in the next few weeks. In the meantime - please feel free to post any ideas for things you'd like to see in this area. Thanks, Simon |

Topic: Site Development / searching for fellow DAFNE graduates I would love to see how my fellow graduates from my DAFNE course are getting on. Would it be possible to include a search box that would just show graduates from a particular hospital or DAFNE course in a future upgrade of the site? This would be better than trawling through all the usernames to try and find anyone from my group/area. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Scales Just spoke to Nadine and she says.....OK I didn't but I did have a quick search and these were on the first link I found. Scales are 4.2cm x 6.2mm and only £14.99 which weigh up to 400g. There is another model for £9.99 that does up to 200g http://www.digitalscales2u.co.uk/Scale-Types/Supermini-Pocket-Scales/WORLDS-SMALLEST-DIGITAL-SCALE-Mini-Key-Ring-Scale--PP400SLV---p371.html Or see them all here: http://www.digitalscales2u.co.uk/Scale-Types/Supermini-Pocket-Scales--_c77/ NiVZ |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Scales I am also trying to source some 'mini' scales for the same reason. I read in a newspaper recently that Nadine Coyle from Girls Aloud was seen measuring a portion of fish on some portable scales in a restaurant so there must be some out there. Have tried scouring the Internet but have yet to find any. Wonder if anyone out there knows her well enough to ask where she got them from!!!!! |

Topic: General Discussion / Disposal of Humalog Kwikpens I use a flex pen for my actrapid insulin and I too put the empty pen in my normal bin. As there is no insulin in the pen and no needle I can't see this being a problem but if anyone knows any different please let us know.Thanks. Karen x |

Topic: Site Development / Can User lists topics be alphabetically listed? Hi Simon,Yeah, most meters use RS232 Serial to communicate. The Lifescan Ultra Easy uses lots of Hex commands to send and receive the data. Some of it is starting to make sense to me, but still got a bit to do. My degree in Computer Science is a big help ;-) Probably best to start another topic for this, or feel free to email me on my registered email address. NiVZ |

Topic: Site Development / Can User lists topics be alphabetically listed? Hi Nivz,This sounds interesting - I tried to do something similar but the means of extracting the data seemed quite obscure - maybe I was doing it wrong though. This kind of support for uploading direct from the meter would be greatly received I'm sure, I'll contact you via email to discuss further. Thanks Simon |

Topic: Site Development / Online BG Diaries Clare - this would be quite difficult to do I'm afraid, as everyone has different amounts of entries of different types in their diary view. You can specify the type of an entry in the input form when you add an entry, and the type is shown when the entry is displayed in your diary. Also, if you hover your mouse over the Blood Glucose reading itself, you will get a longer description of the type of reading.Sorry I can't be of more help here. Simon |
