Topic: General Discussion / Hello!! Hi there everyone....My name is Sharon and I have had diabetes diagnosed since I was 18...I believe i am type one but as usual with me things may need to have further investigation! (long story!) I did my DAFNE course in Jan 2009 and it was the best thing i ever did...my group was great too and we was in a wonderfull setting of a riding centre so had lovely horses to look at!!!! My diabetes control was poor i was and potentially still am in denial somedays... 8 weeks after finishing my DAFNE course my Hba1c level went from 12.6......to 9.6 not great but WOW so much better! Only just got around to joining this group.....hope to speak with lots of you and its sooooo nice to have one thing in common that we all understand! Shazz xx |

Topic: General Discussion / Swine Flu Hi Sam, I have been for my normal flu jab this morning and was advised that the swine flu vaccine should be available at the end of this month. I was told that they still didn't know how much was going to be available to each GP practice but that they felt that diabetics would definately be one of the first groups to receive the vacine. It is probably better to contact your GP practice to find out whether this is the same across the country.Karen x |

Topic: General Discussion / Ratios I would certainly agree with splitting the BI. I am on Lantus but still found that a split dose makes it much easier to control whats going on with the BI. I would split that first and then get to work on trying to reduce the hypos as these may possibly be the cause of the higher readings even if Minesh isn't over compensating. |

Topic: General Discussion / Ratios EveryoneOf course you're right. One change at a time. Minesh should eliminate the hypos first and once they're gone or at least reduced then make any further changes if required. |

Topic: General Discussion / Ratios I think Minesh needs to come on and tell us whether he/she is over treating hypos therefore the higher readings in the morining, and or hypos due to exercise etc or eating extra CPs at night due to the fear a hypo in the morning and yes the possibility of hypo at night hence higher readings. It's good to see different views and I'm not saying I'm right in the advice I give it's how I'm reading it from the evidence so please don't think I'm having a go...I'm not!Sam |

Topic: General Discussion / Ratios Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but 3 mornings out of 3 the BG's are high and there are multiple hypos all day. I'm a big advocate of splitting the BI. I still maintain split the BI and reduce it. Although a night time hypo could give a morning high as well. |

Topic: General Discussion / Ratios Sam's hit the nail on the head here - this site is for people to share and help each other. This extends to not only people who have completed the course, but DAFNE Educators, Doctors, Friends, Family - pretty much everyone who is involved in one way or another. If you look at a users's name you can see what their 'level' is - regular users are in black, DAFNE Graduates are in blue, HCPs are in orange and site admins (mark and myself) are green. This helps to see what the background of anyone in the forums is, so bear that in mind when acting on advice. But this is great to see - keep up the good work guys! Simon |

Topic: General Discussion / Swine Flu What has everybody else heard with regards to the swine flu vacination? My GP says the manufacturer has not released it, yet Diabetes UK says we will become priority to get it and to arrange with your GP. I work in the NHS and starting to wonder what scottish practices are telling patients to english? |

Topic: General Discussion / Ratios I would say it was beneficial for HCPs to get involved everyone has an opinion and bascially this is what this site is for, for us to share our stories and to get advice along the way. |

Topic: General Discussion / Ratios Hi,not sure about protocol of DAFNE educators joining discussions, so I apologise if it's not ok. Just feel that Sam's advice is good. usually wouldn't have less than a 1:1 ratio, so if you are still hypoing on these ratios and they aren't related to exercise etc, the first step to take would be to try reducing BI. You may then find that once hypos have stopped higher levels stop, or that you may need to increase some of your ratios (one at a time! and by 1/2 ie next step would be 1.5:1). I am sure your Dafne educator would also be happy to help. |

Topic: General Discussion / A wee story..... Hi AllAfter completing DAFNE my nurse wrote me out a prescription for Ketone test strips for my monitor which I handed into my GP. I later discovered that my GP removed my normal blood test strips and replaced it with the ketone test strips (they assumed one was replacing the other as similar name) which I could see why. Anyway when I spoke to the receptioist and the words blood glucose test strips came out my mouth she shouted over my voice saying "aye they've been removed now you've to come see the nurse to get you're blood checked once a year" I blurted out "WHAT" says who? receptionist - "the Health Board" well I nearlly had a heart attack, that's not possible I said I'm type 1 diabetic I need to reg check my BG plus I've attended DAFNE and they tell you to check"!! She then says "Oh that's okay it's type 2s"!! So has anyone heard that type 2s have now to go to the nurse to get their BG checked and that they will not be getting blood strips/monitors anymore? I certainly haven't heard on the news so I don't know what's going on there. Thought I'd share that!! Sam |

Topic: General Discussion / Ratios Don't want to sound like I'm causing a battle between folk giving you advice but if your BI was running out you would be having high BG not low, there's too much insulin in your body and you need to reduce you BI, again spilting your BI would be recommended if your readings were high as then you could say your BI is running out. The evidence shows it's your BI. I think you may end up being confused as to what does what.Sam |

Topic: General Discussion / Ratios I think a chat with your Dafne educator would be the most sensible action. However, reducing the number and frequency of the hypos should be the priority. I would suggest split the BI and reduce it (maybe 7 in the morning and 7 in the evening). There is evidence in your diary of the BI running out. You definitely need to reduce it. The multiple hypos are confusing the patterns. |

Topic: General Discussion / Ratios Hi MineshI'm looking at your results and thinkin mmm where are the problem BG, think back to the stepwise approach, monitor see a pattern make the change! I'm assumming you're on lantus or a 24 hour BI. Personally I think it's your background maybe reduce by 20-30%. You're only on a 1:1 ratio and it seems your climbing after your hypos because maybe your over correcting - too much lucozade? Are you eating extra CPs at night because you think you're going to hypo in the morning which could explain your high readings in the mornings from the 29th onwards. Hope that maybe helps you if in doubt speak to your nurse. Sam x |

Topic: General Discussion / New member Mmm sounds like you're having a time of it. Well if you think the pump will be better then go for it, reading on the site it seems the folk who do have one have never looked back. You've prob already been told this but you should get off the fags!! I used to smoke and when I was first diagnosed it took me a few months to come off them it was hard being told not to eat sugary stuff, inject and stop smoking but I have to say I did notice a difference in my BG. It's easier said than dine though so I won't lecture you lol!!Anyway 18CPs for your breakfast - what are you eating? I would have about 15CPs max for dinner cos it would be 30 units QA and even at that I feel is a lot! I know it's hard cutting back in CPs cos you feel you need to eat them but the benefits of cutting back are amazing as you will know from doing the course. I have just stuffed my face with a chinese for a treat, had a hypo before hand so I'll probably be chasing my BG for the rest of the night cos I don't know how many CPs are in a chicken ball!! Hope you don't think I've been a lecturer it is good to talk and share!! Chow Sam |
