Topic: General Discussion / Allergy and Diabetes Hi, the 'doctor' on the childrens ward was he a Diabetes Consultant ? If not on what basis is he deciding it is NOT related to her allergy problems. I would get an appointment to see a Diabetes consultant and go through the issues Amy is having. Everyone is different and anything is possible. I have not heard of allergies causing high BG's but thats not to say it doesn't happen OR the allegry is causing some secondary issue that is causing the high BG's. A lot of non-diabetes HCP's make assumptions about you when you are a diabetic. Two years ago, I was diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome which is basically an auto-immune issue like allegries and Diabetes. Of course my GP said 'oh you're a diabetic and this must be the cause of your kidney problem'. Fortunately my Diabetes Consultant dismissed this out of hand and said it was definately NOT diabetes. It has since been confirmed its just my immune system in general. During my problems I have had both low and high BG's that are not clearly connected to my diabetes. So find someone who can give you good advice about this, I appreciate you might be constrained to pediatrics, I'm not sure at what age Amy moves to 'general' medicine. It sounds like you are being given generic stock answers rather than necessarily getting to the root of the issue. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Pleurisy Hi MelApologies for the delay in replying and this is probably too late. I guess the important thing was to do what you were doing and just see if your blood glucose was going up. Whether intercurrent illnesses produce enough stress hormones to impact your glucose and require the implementing of sick day rules is always difficult to predict. I guess the pain alone is a lot to deal with but it sounds as if, when you posted it hadn't affected your sugar and hopefully you are now improved. ATB Simon |

Topic: Site Development / DAFNE Online iPhone application - help with content/design needed Hi Simon,Excellent work on the latest app. Glad my piggy finger no longer takes me away from the data entry, and I am sure the other changes will also be of use. I have noticed the app crash on several occasions (previous version as well) and have not yet been able to tie it down to anything. If there is anything I can do to assist in figuring this out, let me know. Also, would it be possible for the carb counter to allow us to add items, much the same as the on line one? Here in .au, some things are a little different and it would be a handy feature, and also mean that the carb counter can grow organically. Just a thought. Cheers and keep up the good work. |

Topic: General Discussion / accu-check Like John, we were given the mobile on our course and only had to phone for supplies. When they became available for purchase, we had to get GP's to change over prescription. Was such a hassle, I gave it up and have gone back to my Freestyle Lite. The mobile is now stored in the cupboard and not in use. |

Topic: General Discussion / accu-check I was part of the Mobile pre-supply trial for which cassettes were supplied. After the end of the trial, in January 2010, my local surgery could indeed not find these in the computerised NHS list and the GP initially said could not supply. My local pharmacist could not understand this as they were in his list but he could not supply without the gp's ok. I called Roche and explained problem and they: - said item could be found urgery by entering 'mobile' into the NHS search. - supplied cassettes to keep me going ( on more than one occasion) - called the surgery to advise how to find the item - sent a rep sometime later to he surgery to advise further Prescription processing was a bit hit and miss for about 5 months but now seems to have sorted out ok now If you do have problems I would definitely call Roche 0800-701000 to help sort out. If not already registered, you will need your Mobile serial no. etc Hope this helps. |

Topic: General Discussion / accu-check I've had the same problem with the Accu-Check mobile at Asda here in the South West. Have you managed to resolve the problem? The other problem is that you can't get the prescription back from the Chemist once they've accepted it and tried to order the test kits, so you can't go elsewhere. I managed to get a repeat from the Doctor and tried elsewhere. |

Topic: General Discussion / Android App I upgraded my basic handset to an Android powered Samsung Galaxy S and would love an app thats built around the site for input values.I try using OnTrack but find it's interface awkward having to put in every single value i.e carbs, dose, BG etc. The graphs are nice and clear though ![]() So I also vote for an Android version of the iPhone app, when it's reasonable to have of course, it's great that Mark & Simon do it all in their own time but everyone deserves a little break at xmas. |

Topic: Site Development / DAFNE Online iPhone application - help with content/design needed Hi all,The latest version of the app is now live on the app store, with the following improvements: * Improved keypad entry, so that you don't end up hitting the keypad when entering this information. * Ability to enter Ketones (these are uploaded to the site with the rest of the entry info) * You can now enter corrective doses at +8, as per John's request above. This will still be stored as 0+8, so as to remain compatible with the site diary. Keep the suggestions coming, and remember to review / rate the app if you haven't! Thanks, Simon |

Topic: General Discussion / Allergy and Diabetes HiMy daughter, Amy, was diagnosed T1 three years ago when she was 11, she was previously diagnosed with a peanut allergy when she was 3. She has been admitted to the children's ward 5 times since September with high blood sugars and high ketones, the last time - a fortnight ago - she had DKA and was put on a heart monitor and potassium drip along with sliding scale insulin which was scary for both of us. She has been complaining intermittently of her throat feeling tight and being unable to swallow, we saw a GP the day after she was discharged for the DKA and the GP suggested that this throat problem may be another allergy and that Amy should take antihistamines for a month to see if that makes a difference. Today Amy's eye swelled up, it was stinging and itching and I took her to A & E in case it was an allergic reaction (this was just before teatime and she'd not eaten anything since lunchtime). The dr confirmed that it was an allergic reaction and prescribed prednisolone which she took in tablet form on the department. (Having been on IV steroids and being T1 myself I am aware that they can cause your blood sugars to rise). Does anyone have any experience of allergies and the effect it has on diabetes, could this be the reason that her blood sugars have gone haywire? The doctor on the children's ward said that the only reason for her high bloods is either overeating or not injecting her insulin and I really don't think that is the case (but of course I may just be being hoodwinked by Amy). Hope someone can help, thanks for reading. Caroline |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Needlessly Repeated BG Results... Hi JWo - can you try posting again, we've added a fix (we hope...)Also we've prevented mobile users from creating entries for the same time, so you shouldn't have anymore repeated entries as you currently have above. |

Topic: General Discussion / Not impressed :-S I agree you your prescriptionof metformin should be reviewed...Its actually well known that it gives you a dodgy stomach, by the professionals anyway... There could be many reasons for your weight gain and high blood sugar, I suspect stress from the health of your father... Keep trying to get a hold of your team and try and take some time out for yourself........any advice or support we can offer is available if you need it..... |
