Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Never carb counted Hi Kelly,To learn the DAFNE principles, you need to do the course, but carb-counting itself can be learned outside of the course. DAFNE isn't available online but teaches you how to use carb counting to calculate the appropriate basal and bolus doses. If you are able to attend a course, then I highly recommend it. It is extremely helpful even for those who have had T1D for decades. |

Topic: General Discussion / Libre to be available on the NHS..... Hey JayBee, that's the same reaction I received from my diabetic nurse at my GP. This seems to be the general reaction from most folks. Thinks we all have 2 chances, fat & no. |

Topic: General Discussion / Libre to be available on the NHS..... My local CCG will not be issuing any because they do not feel they can justify the cost. The GP I spoke to to find out if I could get it on prescription made it quite clear that it may not be the case forever, but even people who are less able to care for themselves properly compared to me will not be being issued them, so as usual, I have no chance as things currently stand. This does not surprise me at all. |

Topic: General Discussion / Libre to be available on the NHS..... I was speaking to a young woman on a Facebook page and she said she got prescribed a Libre almost a year ago....She was painting the picture that whatever she wanted she got, but with all that bravado aside....how is that even possible.....? She is at the Royal Alexandria in Paisley, Scotland...... |

Topic: General Discussion / URGENT ADVICE NEEDED - Lancet Devices - Discontinuation of One Touch Comfort Lancets I would encourage you to try to get your DSN's to sort the issue out. Its pointless ( pun intended) to give you lancets that don't fit the device you have. Other people have recommended the SD codefree to me however I would only do it via prescription. I really object to paying for diabetes equipment it should be provided by the NHS, I have spent enough years paying taxes for it and we should NOT be funding our own equipment. If it means throwing the odd hissy-fit at the GP's then you gotta do what you gotta do![]() ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Libre to be available on the NHS..... I agree with novarapidboi and suspect your GP is bending the truth. I'm not sure the devices are actually on the NHS price list yet, it has not come out this month yet and even then there needs to be discussions in the NHS on this. When I recently had an issue with my GP and tried to complain to the CCG I was told they have no interface to GP's they just commission services i.e pay people like hospital consultants to provide their diabetics with appointments. Its debatable if this extends to dictating what a surgery can and cannot prescribe to patients. Hopefully things will clarify over the next few months and we will see if ANY area of the country is actually prescribing them to patients. If they are not then the whole exercise has been completely pointless as having them available and not letting anyone have them is the same as them not being available.... |

Topic: General Discussion / URGENT ADVICE NEEDED - Lancet Devices - Discontinuation of One Touch Comfort Lancets As a short term measure you could get the SD codefree meter and strips. They are the cheapest in the market, strips come in packs of 50 and the lancets are pretty much painless. I've had one now as a spare for 2 years and find it as good as anything else I've used in the past. Yes It doesn't do any singing or dancing technology but the items are easily obtained from Amazon.and would probably be available on prescription. Personally I put a new lancet in each morning and find thats good enough. When hands get cold might take 2 or 3 goes to get a sample with my normal lancet but no problem with the SD lancets. |

Topic: General Discussion / Running the London Marathon 2018 Excellent stuff. I ran my fifth marathon (and fourth since diagnosis) 4 weeks ago. I was going to make it my last, but I enjoyed it so much that I know that there is at least one more to do sometime. The training for a marathon is harder and more boring than the actual event itself. With the streets lined with spectators, you will have a blast running it. Also build up to it slowly to avoid injuries and to make it easier to manage diabetes. All the best for it. |

Topic: General Discussion / URGENT ADVICE NEEDED - Lancet Devices - Discontinuation of One Touch Comfort Lancets It's bad practice but I change lancets about once every 6-8 weeks - only once my fingers start hurting. Are lancets free in the UK? Here in Australia they cost quite a lot and changing after every test would lead to bankruptcy pretty quickly. I'm not unique amongst my diabetic friends, in fact I don't know of anyone here who regularly changes their lancets every time. If they were free or low cost I would. |

Topic: General Discussion / Libre to be available on the NHS.....
That's a but unfair....... Should they not agree to prescribe and then decide as each patient asks or is referred by their consultants.... |

Topic: General Discussion / URGENT ADVICE NEEDED - Lancet Devices - Discontinuation of One Touch Comfort Lancets I used to use one lancet a week - testing 5 times a day and never had any problems. If by 'double-dipping' you mean using a lancet more than once, that shouldn't be too much of a problem. Your diabetes specialist nurses should have a good supply of finger-prickers and lancets. |

Topic: General Discussion / URGENT ADVICE NEEDED - Lancet Devices - Discontinuation of One Touch Comfort Lancets Hi, hope someone can help me.When I went to collect my prescription I was told my usual one touch comfort lancets have been discontinued and was provided with delica ones instead. These however are much smaller and don't fit any lancet device I have to hand. My lancets will probably run out tomorrow unless I double dip. My GP practice is pretty clueless when it comes to specific items so don't want to request something unnecessarily especially if it's the wrong item(s). The one touch helpline goes straight to a voicemail service. I use an omnipod pump/meter so have requested a lancet device from them (never got one with my kit) but they won't send any lancets.... Will try the diabetes specialist nurses but they have been unhelpful lately too (short staffed/part time only). I'm quite annoyed as the one touch comfort lancets (& device) were the least painful I've used especially in winter. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks in advance! FJ |

Topic: General Discussion / Libre to be available on the NHS..... Type 1 for 51 years. Been using freestyle Libre on & off for 15 months, when I can afford it. When I heard the news of Libre being free on the NHS I went to my GP who said they need authority from the local health authority, where I live is the Kent & Medway. Today I found out that Kent & Medway have told them NOT to prescribe the freestyle Libre on prescription. No reason why given. So for the time being it is a no go for me, & anyone else who live in the Kent & Medway area. If , & it's a big if., this changes I will post another update. |

Topic: General Discussion / Running the London Marathon 2018 After 3 years of being a type 1 I have decided to stop letting it hold me back. This year I have really got back into exercise, and specifically running. I am running The London Marathon next year, I hope that in doing so it will raise a lot of awareness around type 1 diabetes and not letting it hold us back in life. I have blogged about my marathon adventure https://type1bri.com/zero-marathon-359-days I will be raising funds for RNIB on the day, a charity very close to my heart, I have many friends with diabetic retinopathy, and the work the RNIB do is priceless. Any support you could offer my cause would be amazing https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/brian-hoadley-type1bri] Bri |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Carbs and Cals Also the My Fitness Pal App is really helpful. You can actually scan product packages to find out exact carb information. |
