Topic: General Discussion / Any Ideas?

Hey Luke, welcome...............

as you seem to be new at this, or at least, the online diary, its hard to give good advice, as there seems to be missing data, like, evening BI doses and morning BG readings........

I would say that your increase from 18 to 20 on your evening BI was correct, and it seems to be reasonably successful, but I would recommend you carry out some more tests on that dose, some 3am readings, and making sure you get a fasting BG reading too, this will confirm its correct, or give you the information to further adjust if needed.

I also noticed that you are changing your ratios by the day, and at different times of the day.......the DAFNE principals teach you to change one thing at a time, so one ratio, test for 3 days, evaluate the results and adjust accordingly until the dose is correct. This is only way to effectively adjust your insulin, systematically.

I have also noticed you are not correcting your high BG readings, or not recording them at least, but its probably that your not correcting..........is this correct? and if so why?

The next logical step after you have got your evening/overnight BI correct is to get your daytime BI dose right, this requires you to have a carb free breakfast/lunch/dinner, so as your only observing the BI dose doing its job..........you can then adjust if it not doing its job of holding you steady.........

Until your background insulin is right, it will be a constant struggle with your QA insulin and your BG results will make no sense......its vital you get it right, or nearly there at least........ Smile

When did you graduate from DAFNE? How did you find it........

I look forward to hearing from you........... Wink

Topic: General Discussion / The only grad in Isleworth?

Hi,

I used to live in Hounslow which as you're probably already aware is next to Isleworth. I did my DAFNE course in 2004 at Central Middx hospital. I continue to receive my diabetes care from Central Middx because they knew all about DAFNE. It might be worth contacting Central Middx to see if you can attend some of the sessions they run.

It's fairly easy to get to from Isleworth. You can catch the overground to Clapham Junction and then from there to Willesden Junction. It's well worth the journey in my opinon.

Hope that helps!

Topic: Questions for HCPs / irregular BGs

Hi
I have been struggling with blood readings lately, i have been getting irregular readings. I moved on to Levemir about 2 weeks ago i take 8 units in morning & 7 in the evining, & use Lispro for meals. I moved to Levemir from Humalin due to lows & my consultant advised the change. But today i woke up with BG at 6.3 with no BFast at 10am my BG rose to 14.3, still no food eaten, at 3.30pm my BG was 12.8, at 4.15pm BG was 14.1 & took 6 units of Lispro as i ate but at 7.30 BG was at 17

I've only eaten once today so far and really concerned why these reading are like this as its making me concerned, i have also been advised by the consultant that they have discovered a shadow on my lung i hope it nothing serious and have an appointment to see a chest specialist to confirm. Ive becoming seriously concerned.

Can anyone put my mind at rest?

Topic: General Discussion / Changing of Needles/BG Meters

I get very confused by the conflicting requirements of the NHS as shown by messages on here. On one hand it's costing too much on test strips so we're told to cut down, but on the other even if there are no reported problems we're advised to throw needles and lancets away after a single use without any thought of the cost.

Personally I have had no problems using needles or lancets multiple times, and so no need to do so. It is, after all, my finger, leg etc. that's being pierced, so surely I'm the one to know whether there is a problem?

Topic: General Discussion / Humalog - Injecting, Before or After?

Having had the opportunity to try CGMS (constant glucose monitoring system) the one thing that came through very clearly was the benefit of injecting beforehand. In my case 15-30 minutes before works best, but as with all these things its has to be a case of trial and error for yourself. As novorapidboi says, I will inject regardless of BG level, provided I am not hypo.

Any idea how many CPs are in white chocolate? I was given some white chocolate "skulls" and tried to guess the CPs, but I was left with high BGs so would appreciate any advice! Rolling Eyes

You are very welcome, though I think recording entries whether on paper or electronically will always be a chore. Incidentally I got an up to date copy of the CP booklet this week and it is getting pretty hefty so an electronic version of that data is making more sense too.

Topic: General Discussion / Lancets

I've been advised that it should be changed after every test.
Initially I found it easier to only change it every day or two but have changed since doing the DAFNE Course.

Hi,

How often do you change the lancets in your lancing device?

When i saw my DSN for a check yesterday she said i should change them after each use.

I've sometimes left the changing of my lancets until my fingers hurt but i'm going to TRY & get into the habit of changing them each day or certainly every other day....we'll see Smile

Hi,
I've always used a new lancet for each blood test, since 1978.
