Topic: Questions for HCPs / Local Authority Changes

Yes I had an argument with my GP a couple of years ago about this but I believe that they are talking about Type 2 rather than Type 1.
The quantity is an issue still and i'm only allowed a supply for 1 month.

Topic: General Discussion / The only grad in Isleworth?

Hi,

I'm looking for a DAFNE hospital near me in Isleworth. Can anyone tell me where my nearest one is. According to the DAFNE website Central Middlesex is my nearest but they're only taking people from the Brent area. My doctors are next to useless. They had never heard of DAFNE. I need to see someone that knows what I'm talking about. Having to explain why I'm injecting every time I eat is getting very tedious. Am I the only DAFNE grad in Isleworth?

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Local Authority Changes

Was wondering if anyone else had heard about this? Went to my doc the other day to get my test strip number increased so I didn't have to put my repeat prescriptions in so often. I was told that the local authority has been advised that diabetics only need to be testing a maximum of 3 times a day and therefore I shouldn't be testing that much and won't be given more. This is the first time in 18 years that I have ever been told to test less. Cost cutting gone mad?

Topic: General Discussion / Driving ban for type 1 diabetics!

The article states that it is an EU directive and seems to hint that it can't be avoided. However, i don't think the Daily Mail are fans of Europe so i hope it is just scaremongering. I personally am lucky to not experience many hypos at all but I would fight tooth and nail to continue driving whatever.

I doubt whether this legislation would ever come into force, it wouldnt be legally workable, by the time its gone through the courts then the human rights courts, it will get laughed out of the door and the minister who suggested it, completely discredited.

I think that the 'even in bed' statement is crossing the line a bit, because even if you did have a normal hypo, depending on sleeping conditions and a multitude of other factors, you may not be able to treat it.......................

the majority of hypos will most likely be dealt with on there own, and by their own, I mean the liver, during the night.......

I think that if you are well controlled, the chances of having a 'severe' hypo needing someones help more than twice a year is unlikely.........

but I can see a lot of people telling their partners and family members not to phone for an ambulance under any circumstances.......... Rolling Eyes

It is common sense that people with severe hypos shouldn't be driving. This article suggests up to one million people could be affected. It says even if you have 2 hypos while in bed in a year your licence may be taken from you.

I am hoping it is Daily Mail alarmism!

Whether this legislation is finally in place or not is unknown to me, but the rules say if you have 2 or more sever hypos in a year, where by you need the assistance of a third party your license will be revoked, revoked meaning a re assessment would be needed to get it back, as opposed to a complete ban forever............

So everyone should be OK, and I know there will be exceptions, but, individuals who do have severe hypos, without warning, on a regular basis should really not be driving.........

Topic: General Discussion / Driving ban for type 1 diabetics!

Hi. I've done a quick search on here but can't see anything on this topic. I read an article a few weeks back that said people who were type 1 may be banned from driving due to hypos due to new legislation. Did anyone else read this? I was quite shocked as I would be unable to work, collect children etc. I hope it doesn't become reality? I could see a large outcry if this was implemented.

Topic: General Discussion / Type 2 Diabetes & Carbs & Cals Book

It would be helpful for her I suppose............

knowing the right portion sizes and different types of carbohydrate that effect her are very valuable bits of information......

depending on what medication she is on, it is probably likely she will not be able to correct high blood sugar with a shot of insulin, so being knowledgeable on the foods and portions that work best for her is really important.....

getting a blood glucose monitor and sticks would be good also, so she can experiment with different foods, to see how they effect her at 1.5-2 hours after meals, and to see what levels she wakes on, and before meals.............she shouldn't/wont need to test all the time though..........once she has discovered what works best for her anyway........ Topic: General Discussion / Humalog - Injecting, Before or After?

I dont use Humalog, but I believe it is a quick acting analog, just like Novorapid or Apidra................

So.........

1. I do inject before a meal, anything from 15-45 minutes, this allows the insulin to get underway in preparation for the meal, I worked out my timings for each meal by testing on a hourly basis between meals to establish what timing gave me the smallest spike [below 9mmol/l]

2. As long as I was not hypo, I would inject my dose at any BG level, before my meal...

3. I would inject after my meal if I was eating a high fat meal were I assume the absorption of glucose may be delayed and so delaying the insulin peak is required also..............[split dose]
