Topic: General Discussion / Eating Out - help needed please to stop my panic

Hi all,

for anyone interested, here's my list of apps or web sites I use when I eat out, to tell me the carbs...

Carbs n Cals - the easiest one really

www.weightlossresources.co.uk - (website rather than app) I go here straight after Carbs n cals if they don't give me the answer - nearly always covers it - a good 2nd place.

www.livestrong.com - I like this a lot too as it covers almost every take away food including carbs in chicken covered in breadcrumbs type thing.

CarbsControl – does cost £1.49 but that’s not much in the grand scheme of things however you can also go on to their web site carbscontrol.com/mains/nutridata (have it saved as a book mark)

Myfood app - good for fruit and veg - covers milk and meat and grains so maybe more aimed at ingredients as opposed to readymade meals / restaurant food.

www.lowcarbsdiets.com (not an app) but gives good description for the amount of food and also covers the GI of each food too.

I do have the McDonalds app too for those occasions I go there. Their nutrition pages cover wraps, coffee's, fruit bags etc.

Note that a couple of these are American but they still make sense and do the trick.

Please don't all the above in the way it looks, I'm not that bad I just don't like cooking for 1 (as the other half is a chilli eating veggie!).

Often, if I've had a naughty day of carbs or had a bit of chocolate when I do go out, I will have non carb food i.e. garlic prawns for starter and steak and mash which is really easy to account for.

:-)

Topic: Questions ? / bereavement

I lost a loved one last year so my heart goes out to you. Sad

It is possible that the stress of the situation (shock included) is upsetting your control because of the hormones involved with stress. With this, concentrate on looking after yourself for now. Don't rush yourself. Give yourself the time you need to grieve. Spend time with those you love and trust, talk to them if you feel ready to. Don't forget to be nice to yourself at this time too; that's easy to forget...

If you want to read the DAFNE principles again, the online DAFNE guidebook there to assist you.
The online DAFNE guidelines can be found here: http://www.dafneonline.co.uk/hbook_topics
Also, as Novorapidboi has said, we are here to help you here on the forum when you're ready.

Best wishes mike28. *hugs*

LOL, Its at work I access this forum the most, at least 90% of the time..........

My novorapid last about 4hours 15 minutes...........you can check this time by testing at regular intervals, say every 15 minutes when approaching the end of the insulins action time, if you don't drop any further [1-2mmol/l] you can be confident your insulin has been depleted.....

Ahhh, ok.... it had never crossed my mind to play with the timing of my QA.

And it's also news to me that anyone (chrisinbrum) thought that QA didn't last 4 hours.....

I suppose, so far I've taken everything I've been told at DAFNE etc as read and therefore if I'm told it last on average 4 hours, thats what I believed (I'm not always so gulible... only with diabetes!! lol!).

Ok, so, from tomorrow, I will be injecting before I eat (which also makes sure I do eat at a sensible time of the morning) and testing the thery.....

Thanks guys for your help, it's been enlightening! What this space!

Mike,

please accept my deepest condolences at the sad time.....

As far as the blood sugars are concerned I don't have any personal experience recently, however I would imagine there wont be any noticeable patterns to them when you are grieving. I would just take each day as it comes and try not to worry too much about remembering the principles at the moment. Allow yourself to grieve and eventually things should settle down again....

When you feel you your ready to approach the blood sugar levels again, we are always here to help if needed.....

Chris is absolutely right.....

Aprt from breakfast, I try and inject my insulin at least 15-20 minutes before actually eating the meal, as the insulin takes that amount of time to get underway, obviously this is different for everyone, at different times of the day and with different GI levels....

So it will take some trial and error on your part, it might mean choosing something else to eat in order to make the peak more manageable......

The handbook stated that quick acting analogues like novorapid start to work about 5-10 minutes after injecting, however this must vary between individuals and can be played with when considering slower/faster absorbing carbohydrates..... Smile

But in the whole its all about dose timing and basically experimenting with different times between injecting and eating

I normally have porridge (low GI) for breakfast so can see the same pattern as you. I've found (by trial and error) that if I know the CP value of what I'll be having then if I inject about 10 minutes before I eat my blood glucose doesn't peak as much after the meal.

I think (for me anyway) that this gives the insulin a head start on the food, and means that it's just starting to get active when I have the food, instead of the glucose from the food having a 15-20 minute head start on the insulin - does that make sense?

When I used a continuous glucose monitoring machine last year I was amazed to see that when I timed injection/food right, I would hardly see a blood glucose peak at all after eating...and the good news is that I didn't go hypo at these times either. Sometimes I'm even able to reduce the ratio of QA to CP because by timing it this way, although the insulin still has to cope with the same CP value, it doesn't have to cope with a high BG peak anymore (so the insulin works less hard).

Also, I'm not convinced that my QA (humalog) works for 4 hours...I think it's probably a lot shorter time of action a lot of the time, maybe about 2 hours sometimes. ...although that doesn't always seem to be the case!

Does that make sense and help??

Topic: General Discussion / Testing 2 Hours After Eating

I just can't get my head round this yet....
As recommened on a forum - testing after 2 hours to check my levels are at max 10 - ideally 8.

I spoke to my GP about it and she said to aim for 8mmol (as I need really tight control for some medical things coming up).

I can't get my head round being 8 or 10 2 hours after a meal - mainly for the fear of having a hypo - as in my mind my quick acting insulin works for an average of 4 hours.....

In addition to that, I'm trying to stick to low GI food i.e. porridge and/or seeded toast in the mornings so surely this has an impact on what my levels willbe 2 hours after a meal....?

Help! :-)

Example - woke up with 8.4 this morning at 7am. Had seeded wholemeal toast and 500ml cup of tea with skimmed milk = in total equalling 40g of carbs. Injected at a ration of 1:1.5 so 6 units of quick acting. 2 hours later my mmol was 15 - far higher than the 8 I'm aiming for.

Whilst it isn't lunch time yet, I believe my levels will be circa 7 or 8 at that time.

What am I doing wrong?

Any hints and tips would be great.

Thanks

Thank you very much indeed for this. However when doing this the whole app just crashes. I've sent a pm to Simon to ask if this can be fixed.

Topic: General Discussion / Eating Out - help needed please to stop my panic

Hi there,
I'm a huge fan of eating out, a lot! lol!
Some tips that work for me or that I've found and are worth a try....

Look at the menu online for the restaurant you'll be going to and have in mind the meal you will be eating. Calculate the carbs for that meal and pop them on a post it note in your diabetic bag or on the meter so you don't have to look them up at the time.

I tend to inject for my starter directly after eating it, then inject again directly after my main meal, this then allows for gaps in service/food being delivered. I tend to avoid puddings when I'm out as it's just too hard to figure out what carbs are in them most of the time.
The reason I inject immediately after a meal is that I'm never 100% sure if I will like it all or if I'll be too full so this way I'm injecting for what I've actually eaten.

There is also a Carbs and Cals app for iPhones and Androids too plus lots of other free app's that will give you the carbs per meal/item..... I have loads of them on my phone as you never know which one will have the exact food I am eating. If none of them have it, I go on to Livestrong.com website as that has loads of nutrition information.

Hope some of this helps :-)

JWo - must have been frustrating for you to post a message looking for help and just one person respond, thank you for your help in getting this one going, little surprised no doctor or nurse has jumped in to offer anything, or perhaps they dont visit the site.

It has been frustrating but I do consider that thread to be one of my not so bad attempts at seeking help on this forum(!).

My DAFNE nurse is on here (JJPAG) but I don't know how much she signs in now. When I first joined the site, she did message me privately to discuss my levels but was usually very concerned about the privacy of the site, which I can understand, they have legal procedures to follow. So I usually update my diary here and then email it to her and the hospital diabetes team to get their feedback that way (I've signed for the okay for them to discuss my levels by email so it's okay with them).

JJPAG has been a great help to me though with most of the problems I've been having, I've usually been adjusting too keenly (as I put in my first reply to this thread, I have been known to not let my QA insulin to finish working - gaining that patience and fighting the highs phobia has been difficult but it's worth it in the long run) or I've been doing everything fine and the good range HbA1c I desperately wanted continued to remain out of reach.

She and the hospital team did however recognise that I was stressed/low mood so did remind me that I shouldn't be looking for patterns because stress makes them irratic. Since then, I'd started trying to work out what has been causing me continued stress causing the knock on effect on my control - a difficult task when a lot of unfortunate events have happened in the past year and a half or so. One thing at a time I suppose though... most of the adjustments I'm trying currently seem to be working out okay (I mean, just looking at my recent BG results, great results have started appearing more frequently!) so I'm already on my way to sorting things out which helps everything (especially my sanity!).

Does feel like a bit like a game of wack-a-mole doesn't it? You fix one thing and then another red BG result appears at another point of the day! Razz

I looked at these, my concern is the iPhone 5 is rumoured to have a new bottom connector which would make the ibg unusable. Shame cos they look cool Very Happy

Diabetes is a demanding condition
Good blood-sugar is the ideal position
You test, you inject
The result's not what you expect?
Then DAFNE can help in your mission.

I tend to "Double Dip" when I eat out.
While ordering my meal I think about the CPs and I inject when the meal arrives. Not before as sometimes there is a bit of a wait. I then inject a second time either when the second course arrives or to correct at the end of the meal. It can be hard to judge how many CPs are in a meal that you have not prepared and it can ruin your meal out if you let it.
I then test and correct later.
Moris.

Hi,

The Android app does download your diary entries from the website. If you tap on 'entries' then tap on your menu button you will get a dialogue box/strip giving these headings: Download, Upload, Food Groups, Alphabetic, Favourites, More. Tapping on 'Download' gives you options for the period of time that you want to download.

JWo - sorry I don't think i can view your diary will try again!
Novorapid - that's quite a difference
I've never considered changing my ratios depending on the meal - I notice you both do!
Maybe I should look into that! Thanks

As shown on my BG diary entries, I was taking 0.5:1 across all meals but today I adjusted my lunchtime ratio to 1:1 in light of the last past few days patterns. Smile

Hi JWo

I can see that you qa could reduce your by 4-5 but I do think this will vary person - person andcwecall just have to get to grips with our own bodies don't you?

Am I right in thinking your ratio is less than 1:1 on your meals - I'm sure you said that previously?

I was just thinking / comparing - see I'm about 2:1 so I feel that's why my qa would not drop me 4-5.

Vic - you take less than 1:1 don't you? So maybe your corrections of qa would drop you more than someone like me?

What ratios is everyone finding works for them at the moment?
