Topic: General Discussion / Ketones I generally run low end (between 4-6) but am also insulin sensitive...hence the need for the pump.I can hypo with no insulin in my system! Hypos generally are mid morning an mid afternoon (between 3-4hours after breakfast/lunch) I take no insulin at these times to try and stop the hypos but doesn't make much of a difference tbh. Lowest hypo was 1.7 when I was on injections and 3.1 since being on pump. I generally feel hypo around 4...which is a regular bg for me! |

Topic: General Discussion / Ketones Hi, no it wasn't... I am on a pump and needed to have no insulin during the tests, so pump was switched off...I keep hypoing (and have ketones at these times) so docs wanted to see what happened during a fast with no basal insulin but sugars stayed constant in the 4s with rising ketone levels so tests were cancelled!Btw I have rare form of diabetes, so body behaves differently to normal T1 or T2 diabetics ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Ketones Hi VickypThat's really interesting. I always imagined my bg would be running high to have ketones. Was your bi still running when you had your stay in hospital ? mda |

Topic: General Discussion / Ketones I had ketones during a hospital fasting test, and in the 27 hours without food my sugars stayed below 5, yet I was building up ketones...so not always due to high sugars.Insulin is needed to get rid of them tho! |

Topic: General Discussion / My Recent BGs - comments wanted please Comments wanted on the above please - 05.02.14 - 14.02.14Went to my diabetic drop in clinic on Thu 06.02.12 - most targets are not in range: 4 - 7 for breakfast, lunch & teatime 8 - 12 for bedtime also DSN wondered if I'm counting carbs correctly Since then I'm trying hard to get carbs counting correct & concentrating hard on rounding them up or down to the nearest 5 depending on where I am in my target range. Round down if BG is around 4 - 5 ish then up if BG is 6 - 7 ish or over. |

Topic: General Discussion / New to dafne Welcome and congrats on DAFNE. The best thing i ever done. Still have my ups and downs but compared to pre DAFNE i feel so much better. Getting your levemir sorted is the way to go. It frustrated me at the start but finally sorted that taking mine when i get up at 6am and when i go to bed at 10pm-11pm works best for me. Good luck. |

Topic: General Discussion / Ketones According to the DAFNE golden rules, any single occurrence of BGs above 17, or two consecutive readings (e.g breakfast and lunch, or lunch and dinner) above 13.If you are sick though, you might want to check even if those conditions are not met, as you can develop ketones from dehydration too. My wife who is not diabetic had severe hyperemesis (severe morning sickness), and was tested fro ketones on several occasions because she couldn't drink plain water - only soft drinks. There are occasions where you don't need to be diabetic to develop ketones. |

Topic: General Discussion / Ketones I've not been well and running bg at approx. 8. Went to the gp today and found I had ketones. I am curious to know when do you start to check for ketones ? I imagined I'd need to be running much higher... |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Help With Evening BI Hi Derek,Your readings look like a classic case of dawn phenomenon. From about 3 am, our bodies produce a whole bunch of hormones, some of which increase insulin resistance. We need more insulin to counter that over that period of time. The problem is that looking at your diary, if you increase your evening basal to cope with that, you will hypo overnight before the hormones get released. It is an area where pumpers have it over us MDI-ers because they can increase their insulin dose between the troublesome period and wake with great BGLs. If it was any other time of day, it could be treated with some QA, but DP happens at the worst time when we want to be asleep, and not waking up to inject QA to cover it. There is a thread here with some practical suggestions: http://dafneonline.co.uk/forums/1/topics/1668 If you type "dawn" into the forum search tool, it returns 8 results and there will be further helpful information in those threads. I find that when I am exercising most days per week, that I have little trouble with it, but if I am on holiday and not exercising for more than 3 days, I see my BGs increase considerably in the mornings. If you aren't already exercising regularly, then it may be worth considering. Cheers, Warwick. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / The 2 hour check the 1.5 - 2 hour point is the peak of your quick acting insulin, and so theoretically this will be your spike, and you wont go higher than that.........if you can get that to an acceptable level for you [mine is single figures]..........it gives a good indication of how well matched the timing of your insulin was to the digestion.... if its higher than you would like, you could try injecting longer before you eat a similar meal the next time..... so I personally think its worth it to test at these times, however DAFNE likely wont and shouldn't mention it as it complicates the approach they are trying to teach, testing mid meal is a tactic that comes later when you have become more confident and competent with your own control.... |
