Topic: General Discussion / new to DAFNE Welcome to the forum![]() Good to see that you are using the online diary. Like to encourage you to do a BG every day before bed to help you understand what goes on overnight and add some 03:00 am tests too to help get your BI right. Slowly does it though. May I ask what BI you use? Personally I split my Lantus BI taking equal amounts at around 06:30 and 18:30 each day with breakfast and dinner respectively. Will take some time to get things right. Don't be discouraged. We are all our own worst critics. Your results are comparitively good...not many green figures show yet, but with a controlled structured approach they will improve. Topic: Questions for HCPs / Pain in my hand and arm My consutant is an upper limb specialist and he organised the nerve conduction tests needed to confirm CTS for me with medical physics department at the local NHS hospital. The nerve conduction tests are a very odd experience Alun. The lady technician looked at me a little wanly when I said "Don't electrocute all of me though!" Regards Garry |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Pain in my hand and arm I too suffered pins and needles in the hands at different times. First my right and then left hand. Both were cured by carpel tunnel surgery. We are as type 1s, particularly after my 33 years, so my Consultant Surgeon tells me, more prone to wall thickening of both nerve and tendon sleeves leading to nerve restriction and trigger finger problems. Have also had two separate fingers fixed too. I hope it is many years before any problems arise for you though. Regards Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / insulin resistance Welcome to the forum![]() Looked back using my online diary to find that I started Metformin use just over 13 months ago following discussion with my consultant. He recommended that I should cut my BI by 10 - 20% utilising self controlled dose metformin with a limit of up to 3g a day. I'm 93kg. Have cut my BI from 56u, to an average of 50u using 1g per day since. Didn't use any higher dose Metformin as I found that it upset my digestion......it's not nicknamed 'Metfartin' for nothing ![]() Although we are all quite different from one another in terms of dosage and effect, I hope you have the confidence to try it. It is very commonly prescribed for T2s and has a long track record. Not sure how many consultants offer it to counter T1 insulin resistance though. You will probably find that your insulin resistance will still continue to vary with your day-to-day state of health just as before. Regards Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / Lantus Solostar pre-filled pen releasing insulin when pressed on zero setting Tried to replicate your problem with my current Lantus Solostar pen but without success. Get 2 drops out of a 0.23 mm diameter x 4 mm needle as worst case.Must say that I unknowingly follow Lantus instructions as to injection method and when injecting hold button down until 10 seconds is up. Only other thing that I could think of was that if it was first use - and the pen was still normalising temperature to ambient after removal from fridge - there would be slight pressure within the pen which would be released when pressed - even on 0. Personally on first use of a new pen I wind it all the way up to 80 and wind it back again to 0 as I have found sometimes the mechanism can be a bit sticky, particularly if thumb not exactly on the centre of the button and it can seem to lock and the insulin is delivered in spurts. Does not fill me with confidence about correct dose applied. Have found that my pen initial wind-up does the trick though and have had no further sticky dose applications. Regards Garry |

Topic: Site Development / New Format Website Bit of a surprise to find a completely new format and an ideal crossover between the traditional website that we are all familiar with and smartphone based view.Everything works well......and intuitively....not sure how to edit a post though. Thought the link and bouncing ball meant that I would be able to enter text edit directly as before. Thanks to those who put in the work. Congratulations ![]() Regards Garry |

I did discover the diary modification option a while ago but had got used to my existing system and so have not used it. Regards Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / Driving License Renewal We have talked in the past, within threads on this site, about upcoming European legislation and it is a shame that you were unaware of it.After the change over to Human insulins, my warning symptoms went. I think I had been type 1 for 30 years then. The registrar working for my consultant at the time was a great guy, far more in tune with the then current research and he advised me to run high for 3 months to recover warning signs. It worked very well for me and I recovered symptoms and was far more in control of my situation. Think my HBA1c s were 6.odd then and he suggested that they were far too good! He was right. Your numbers look good. Perhaps with support from your Health Care Professionals you will feel confident to run high for a limited time to help recover. Keep your chin up as I hope that with support and the needed letter writing from your HCPs that you will have your licence back quickly. Regards Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / new graduate today Can I suggest that you get your diabetes nurse to look at your injection sites and offer advice on suitable rotation of their use. This may be responsible for some of your adverse results.Regards Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / Excercise or Depleted Insulin Alan has cleared this kind of thing up for me in the past.I have gone out whilst high and exercised, trying to knock it back and expecting to find my BG well down. But found it going up..... BG BE 13.2 AE 13.4 and was puzzled by my personal experience. The logic seems sound. Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / new graduate today Welcome![]() Take your time. Don't be hard on yourself. We all peak out after meals. Try to focus on the result before the next meal - not on the results in between as they will almost always be above range...If they are not you might have a hypo before your next meal. As you mentioned this is the time to be disciplined, take a long term view of things and only change one thing at a time to ensure you fully understand the effect of any change made. Depending upon the insulin types that you use, you will find that the rate of Blood Glucose reduction per hour....if you want to think of it like that...varies with time of day, last BG, work load, stress and many more things besides ![]() Introduce too many variables....into the the complex machine that is us....and you will find it difficult to understand what is going on. Regards Garry |
