Topic: Site Development / Question: Sharing the online diary Dear site members,The ability to share all or part of your Blood Glucose diary with other site users has now been implemented. There are two methods for doing this, detailed below: Option 1 - Using the forums You may add a date range of up to 10 days to a forum topic/post. When browsing your DAFNE Online BG Diary, look above the diary table itself and you will see a drop down box allowing you to select which of our forums you would like to post part of your diary on to. Then ensure 10 days or less is currently displayed in your diary view, and click the 'Share' button. This will add the date range to a new forum topic, allowing you to add a Topic title and description. This option is intended for users who want to seek advice from the entire user base of the site, much in the same way that is done each morning of the DAFNE course using the overhead projector. People replying to the topic (and of course the topic author) can add their own diary entries by adding a date range in the format DDMMYY (Day Month Year) to their reply box in the relevant boxes. An example from my diary is shown in the following post, so you can see how the diary will be formatted. Option 2 - Sharing with individual users You may also share your entire diary with another user of the site. To do this, click the 'users' link at the top of the site, and then use the search box on the right hand side to search for the user either by username or email address. In the list of results, click their name to see their profile, and then click the 'Share my DAFNE Diary with this user' link. To see a list of users who have shared their diary with you, click the 'shared diaries' link to on the right hand menu, and then click that user's username. Once you have shared your diary you can 'unshare' it with a user by following the share procedure detailed previously. To see which users can currently see your diary, navigate to your diary and see the list to the right (in a box underneath 'DAFNE Tools'). This option is ideal for users who wish to share their online diary with their DAFNE Educators, and maybe other members of their DAFNE Group. We hope that you find this new functionality enjoyable and useful. If you have any feedback at all, whether positive or constructive then please don't hesitate to let us know. Thanks, Simon P.S. Please remember any advice given on the forums is just that; advice. Insulin dose adjustment may be different for each individual and also depends on external factors such as exercise and illnes |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Protein Supplements Good points there - I was more wondering if the 'excess' protein intake causes the kidneys to work harder and may cause them to fail somehow. (This may be totally untrue, hence why I work in IT and not medicine...) |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Protein Supplements One question I've always had, which isn't strictly DAFNE Related but more focused on Diabetes in general is - what is the HCP/Dietician point of view on Sports Supplements such as Protein & Creatine?Whilst at university I was quite heavily into weightlifting + used things like protein shakes & bars to up my daily protein intake as that was touted as the major nutrient related to muscle growth + repair. Then I found out I had Type 1 and the weightlifting stopped for a while. I've started getting back into it now - but have refrained from the use of protein supplements as someone mentioned 'they will put increased strain on my kidneys' - it this true, and if so what are the alternatives for people with Type 1. Also, whilst on the subject of gyms, I recently joined a new gym and during the induction was told that I wasn't allowed to use the Power Plate machine as I had Diabetes - does anyone know of the reason for this? Thanks, Simon |

Thanks for the update Becky. I've heard nothing on my complaint. I wonder if they could provide us with the decision criteria they used to say that DAFNE and WHISTLE (anyone heard of this?) are the same. |

Topic: Site Development / Question: Sharing the online diary Hi all,One particular feature of the DAFNE Course that I liked was the fact that we all shared our BG Diaries with each other and commented on trends, ratios etc. This was a feature that was mentioned a while back (when the site was just a twinkle in our eyes) and so far we haven't done anything on it. I am revisiting this feature now, and would like to know people's thoughts on it. First of all, would you like to share your diary with others? Next, how would you like to do it? Some ideas I had: 1. Via the forums; you could create a topic, supplying a date range of diary entries which you would like to share with others, and invite comments via the usual forum 'reply' system. 2. As a separate function, so that others could view your diary in the same way that you do, and add posts to it. 3. Any other ways? Obviously, this would have to be an opt-in feature, as not everybody will want to share their diary with others. How then would you like to share it - the options are: 1. A yes/no toggle so that either all users can see your diary, or nobody can. 2. A group method, so that only DAFNE Graduates/HCPs can see it. 3. Only people in your region can see it. 4. Naming individiual users (e.g. your DAFNE Educator). As always we want to make the site useful to you, so your opinions on this are welcomed and encouraged. Thanks, Simon |

Topic: General Discussion / Does Dafne work? Lets not forget also that DAFNE and similar education courses are not just training material, they are a chance for people with Type 1 (or 2 in the case of DESMOND) to meet people with the same condition. This interaction with other diabetics which rarely happens in normal life is a fantastic opportunity to share experiences, learning from each other as well as the education team on better ways for managing the condition because lets face it, diabetes is something where you never stop learning; whether it is about insulin adjustment, how different foods/activities affect BG levels, or even about dealing with complications. It is this kind of interaction which is lost in online courses, and is arguably a very important factor. With regard to releasing the DAFNE materials on our site, they are published here to act as a refresher for people who have been on the course, who may have misplaced their handbook or would prefer to look up topics on the internet. They are not intended as a means of education, because as I mentioned above, DAFNE is so much more than reading a handbook. |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Mobile Feature Requests Hi Stefan,I've been developing the functionality you requested, and there is now a link to view the full site when you access the site using a mobile device. If you do switch to the full site on your mobile device, you can get the mobile site back using the link at the bottom of the site, to the left of the Help/Contact links. If you do have any other features of the site you'd like 'mobilised' then let us know and we can work on it. Lizzie - thanks for the feedback/praise, much appreciated! Simon |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / DAFNE On Line Mobile Hi Mike,Thank you for your feedback - it is always good to hear something nice. Our aim from the start has been to empower DAFNE Graduates and other people with Type 1 to better control the condition using the power of the internet. Glad to hear we are helping you in this respect with the CP List access. If there's anything else we can do then please don't hesitate to ask. Simon |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Mobile Feature Requests Hi Stefan,Thanks for your feedback. At the moment the site automatically detects whether users are browsing using a mobile device or desktop browser. We'll look into how to override this so that you can see the full site on your mobile. Watch this space. Simon |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / BG Diary at Clinic Hi John,Agree with your points above. It would be good to get a view from your dietician of whether or not they could access such a feature. HCP = Healthcare Professional, a catch-all term for DAFNE Doctors, Specialist Nurses and Dieticians (apologies if I've missed anyone out of that list). If you look to the left of the forums you can see whether a user is a HCP, or in your case, a DAFNE Graduate. Thanks, Simon |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / BG Diary at Clinic Hi John,We don't actually have any Dieticians/Nurses in the online team per se - myself and MarkE are both DAFNE Graduates and take care of the running and development of the site. We also have support from DAFNE Central up in Northumbria. I agree that it would be nice to share your diary with dieticians/nurses at reviews. There are a number options here: 1. There is already a print layout defined so you can print out your results and take them on paper. See the "Printable view of currently displayed results" link above the diary display on this site. 2. We can set it up so you can allow specific users to view your diary. You would have to know the username/email of your HCP to do this. 3. You could share the diary via the foirums for all users to see and comment on, in a similar way to you do don the actual course using the overhead projector. Options 2 and 3 don't exist yet so we'd have to assess feasibility/time needed to do them if there was enough demand. One question to the community though: Do HCP's have internet access during reviews/clinics? EDIT: Also, would HCPs be comfortable doing something like this? Thanks, Simon |

Topic: General Discussion / Meeting up after the course I agree - one of the most useful and rewarding parts of DAFNE for me was meeting up with other people who had Type 1, and gaining from their experiences too. It is a shame that this isn't sustained more/is quite hit and miss depenending on where you are in the country. One of the things we were looking at for future work was adding 'regional' areas so you could see other site users from your DAFNE Centre or others close by, and arrange social events through the site. We've been stabilizing our current features, but will be soon looking to the future and new features. If there is enough demand for something like this, then it will get done. |

Topic: Site Development / Online BG Diaries Hi Simon,Glad this update will make you want to use the diary now. Regarding using the arrow keys to navigate the boxes - unfortunately I don't think we can implement this as it is functionality implemented by the web browsers. You can, however use the tab key (above Caps Lock) to cycle through the different boxes from left to right. Sorry I can't be of more use here. If anyone knows any different about the arrow key functionality then please let us know. Regarding the cancellation of drop down choices - I will look into this, should be fairly easy to do. I'll let you know when its fixed. Thanks, Simon |

Topic: Site Development / Online BG Diaries Hi all,I've had a first bash at the multiple diary entry entry function. If you go to your online diary there is a link to add multiple entries in the add entry section. This will allow you to add up to 10 at a time. Please note you can only store up to 8 entries per day so any you do try to save beyond 8 entries may not be saved properly. I'd appreciate your feedback on this on how it can be improved. Thanks, Simon |

Topic: General Discussion / Do you have access to the Online Handbook? Hello site members,Take a look to the right of your screen. If you are logged in you should see an orange box containing, amongst other things, 'BG Diary'. If you are a DAFNE Graduate (and the site recognizes you as one) then you should also see a link to the 'DAFNE Course Handbook'. If you can see this and are a DAFNE Graduate then... Fantastic - your registration on the site is OK. If you are a Graduate and cannot see the link to the DAFNE Course Handbook, then the site doesn't know that you are a DAFNE Graduate and therefore won't give you access to the handbook. This is because material in the handbook is potentially dangerous if used by someone who isn't DAFNE trained. To get access do the following: Get in touch with your DAFNE Educators. They have been prompted to register on this site as HCPs (HealthCare Professionals) via an email straight from DAFNE Central. This gives them the ability to generate a code for their particular DAFNE Centre, which is then to be distributed to their Graduates. Please note this code is unique to DAFNE Online and is no way related to the centre codes from DAFNE Central. Once you have got the code from your educators, click the 'Settings' link at the top of the site. There, about halfway down, you will see a DAFNE Centres section. First of all, select your DAFNE Centre from the drop-down box; these are sorted into regions then alphabetically for your convenience. Then, enter the code given to you by your Educator into the 'Centre Code' box. Finally, click 'Update Centre' and, all being well, you should now see a link to the DAFNE Course Handbook on the right hand side of the site. You may receive the centre code in the format of an A4 invitation flyer, if this is the case then you don't need to follow the instructions to create a new account if you already have one - just use the code in the flyer in the instructions above. It will work. If you have any questions or comments on this process, then post them here. Thanks, Simon |

Topic: Site Development / Online BG Diaries Guys,Point 2 - all done! Regarding the inputting of mutiple diary entries - there is a balance required here as you have to remember that all of the data you input on the page is sent to our DAFNE Online web servers... The more entries, the more data; the more data the slower it will be to save your entries (and this may result in your web browser timing out and not saving them at all). I'd suggest 7 ( a days worth) as a starting point, and I'll work towards that, if there are no objections? Simon |

Topic: Site Development / Online BG Diaries Hi Simon/Paul,Some good comments there - I agree with them too. Regarding the entry of multiple entries I propose having a separate page for this - as having 28 rows will take up a lot of space. It will take a bit of time to do as the way the site is set up at the moment it geared towards accepting one set of data for an entry at a time. It can be done though. Point of discussion - what is a good number of entries to enter at a time - 28? Re adding the day to the Date column - this can easily be done, expect it to appear soon... Thanks, Simon |

Although I did the course in Sheffield I now live under the care of Arrowe Park so have sent them a letter of complaint - here's hoping they realise that the DAFNE Course is an important tool in the care of people with Type 1 like ourselves. If I hear anything back I'll let you know... |

Topic: General Discussion / "Balance" letter about injecting in public Well it seems the rest of Balance readers share our shock and dismay at this nurses views on injecting in public. 2 pages of this months letters section are devoted to people's reactions to the letter mentioned at the top of this post, and I am pleased to say that not one of them supports the point of view expressed by this nurse. |

Topic: General Discussion / "Diabetes set off course" Balance letter It seems that we share the views of the vast majority of the balance-reading population. This months letters section, for the most part, highlights the strengths of the DAFNE course, and how much of a positive impact it has had on people's lives - both during and after the week itself.Very encouraging! |

Topic: Site Development / Online BG Diaries Prompted by Carl's (and others) request, there is now an 'XML Export' link displayed above your BG diary, next to it you'll find a link to a nicely formatted printable view of your currently displayed results (I used this recently to take my recent results to a review appointment).Let us know if there is any other functionality you'd like to see in the online diaries. Thanks, Simon |
