Topic: General Discussion / Type 1 Diabetes and the Art of Parenting... It's funny you say about the "I'd give anything to take it away from you". I thought I'd done that - when Amy was four I was diagnosed with MS and when she was seven I was diagnosed with T1 - I was grateful that it was me that got something wrong and not Amy (she is my only child). Unfortunately it didn't stay that way and she was diagnosed with T1 at age 11. At least we both know what a hypo feels like, so we can empathise with each other and she helps with finding fast acting carbs![]() On the memories of first day of diagnosis, I took Amy to the hospital after school for a blood test (having already got the form from my GP as she'd started having wetting problems) and to reward her for being brave about the big needle I bought her a big bar of galaxy on the way home (what an idiot!). We were eating our tea when we got a phone call telling us to go straight to the children's ward. I can't believe that I didn't realise she was diabetic. |

Topic: General Discussion / 4mm needles I am still on 12mm syringes as I have been since I was diagnosed in 1993 (Dislike the NovoPen). My doctor is being slow at changing my prescription. Going to have to book an appointment soon and see what is going on. Are the shorter syringes more comfortable? |

Topic: General Discussion / Blog: "DIY DAFNE" - An Diabetic Outsider's View My thoughts will come as no suprise, I did after all start this site with Simon, the article like most that have not done DAFNE misses the point conpletely. Just becasue the name of the course includes a reference to eating people presume thats all it is. Those that have done the course know different. Unfortunately it seems that even some of those in the medical profession don't get the point.DAFNE is evidence based, this means it is based on lots of research and a large amount of data that proves it works. Doing it DIY or doing a PCT version of DAFNE is NOT the same. Changing the course to 5 x 1 day a week is NOT the same. Evidence is base on fact not presumption. This sadly is where it does need a louder voice, to make people understand its more than just carb exchanges and the body of evidence that supports it. I have no problem with people adjusting their insulin themselves and I too did it pre-DAFNE, however it is niave to compare this to DAFNE and believe you are doing 'the same' as DAFNE. You are not. Anyway, my views, interested to hear what others think. |

Topic: General Discussion / Blog: "DIY DAFNE" - An Diabetic Outsider's View Blog entry: DIY DAFNECame across this blog today and found it interesting because I understand what they see when it comes to DAFNE (I used to do the guesstimation stuff pre-DAFNE!) but I don't think they see everything DAFNE has to offer at the same time. I feel there is a possibility of DAFNE being shrugged off due to a brief outside view! For example, how does this person cope when it comes to serious sickness? Do they just go to the hospital like most of us would have done pre-DAFNE? I don't know about you, but I was genuinely amazed and frightened about how the DAFNE sick day rules worked - but they do work! It's quite natural for someone who has not done DAFNE to think "oh I couldn't possibly do that" because of the risk of taking the action - it is a lot of insulin to take on such a regular and hourly basis! Before I did the DAFNE course, my doctor's rough explaination of DAFNE was along the lines of "it's what you do now, but with a bit more information" ... something like that - and I think that's a great thing, not a reason to pass it by. It's all well and good you DIY'ing your control, but if you can get the research results from day one - good golly, it sure saves a lot of hassle! I don't think it'll be possible to figure out post-hypo sensitivity on DIY alone as well - another hassle saver from DAFNE! What are your thoughts on this? How do we feel about how well DAFNE stands out within the diabetic community? Does it need a stronger or louder voice? |

Topic: General Discussion / Type 1 Diabetes and the Art of Parenting... Thanks for your posts, I think this is a great subject to talk about... even though it can be a touch sensitive. It can be quite sad how life works out when it comes to having the condition. I've never really had any one to relate to so I'm glad your daughter has you caroline15. Your post does remind me of all the times when I wasn't feeling very well my Mom would say to me "I'd give anything to take it away from you." ... even now, I don't think I'd be prepared to give it to either of my parents. Fascinating video interviewing 4 families that have a Type 1 Diabetic child One of the questions: What sort of memories do you have of your first day of diagnosis? All I remember is my Mom getting me into the car and driving me to the hospital. For some reason me looking out the window at the sky particularly stands out in my memories. Not long after my diagnosis, my Mom bought me a regular can of coke and at the time, I became very sick. For years I thought it was because of the coke - turned out I had a stomach bug! |

Topic: General Discussion / Not impressed x 2 I was the same since last Sep. when I went on the Dafne and had very high readings all day and even with the corections it would not come down. I have been testing through night and have been hypoing through night and dident know it. I have now got my BI down from 20 to 8, and from the start of this year have not been to bad. Because of the highs in the mornings I had been putting the BI up. I injected for years in my stomach but now I move it around and things have started to get better it has taken a long time and I thought that this wasent working for me but with sticking with it, its starting to work.Hope things get better for you keep at it good look. |

Topic: General Discussion / Not impressed x 2 I see you use your stomach for all injections.Do you have any lumps or bruising problem areas Jo? I found when using large doses that it was necessary to spread things around to get repeatable insulin absorption. Have you discussed alternate injection sites with your HCP? Try not to miss BED result - and possibly some 03:00 am results especially when changing BI - you need as much info as you can get. Stick with it. I can imagine that you may be a little dispirited at the minute - but your results seem more controlled. You will put it right. Garry |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / How to download data from iphone app Hi GuysThanks for your help I have now managed to get my results to the online records. It was really easy when I was shown how. Thanks Dianne To answer your question the dafne app allows you to record your results without being online I am terrible at recording results in a paper diary but I always have my mobile with me so it's simple. If you need any help just ask as I am pretty confident on how to use the app now |

Topic: General Discussion / Dispatches - Hospital Food I have also had similar issues to Marke.Twice in my Diabetic life I have been hospitalised - shattered my left leg twice, 5 years apart. At the first hospital they had me rigged up to a drip and a sliding scale, which was playing havoc, plus the food was rubbish - it got to the point where after the second day I told them in no uncertain terms that if they didn't remove the drip, I would a) remove it my self, and b) make an allegation of criminal assault against them as I was withdrawing my consent as their treatment of me was not in my best interests. This obviously didn't go down well with the control freak ward sister, but it had the desired effect and I was able to test and control my diabetes myself. The second time I had learnt my lesson - all be it at a different hospital, and I told them they could only put me on the sliding scale whilst I was under the general anaesthetic, but as soon as I was awake and aware I would be managing my condition myself - this prompted a very terse meeting with the ward sister and (for some reason) some administrator, but I got my own way. This was all pre Dafne, but I am sure not much has changed, as wards are areas of generalism not diabetic specialists, but remember - it is your body, and they need your consent - unless you are unconscious, when they will act to save your life - and they are very good at this, but once awake, it is for you to decide, not them, don't be pressured by them, be firm - or down right rude in my case, you know far more about your condition and your body than they do. It was also interesting to watch the C4 (I think) program on last night with the chef (can't spell his name, but you know the one I mean, the fancy one who makes stuff out of liquid nitrogen) and see the rapid improvement in the quality of food at the Alder Hay. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Spirits and Wines Depending on your sensitivity to carbs and insulin of course, you could just round up, that's what I do all the time, that means I can be sure I will be on target, even if on the lower side, but I seldomly am on the lower side strangely, if your having something that is 1.5CPs (15g) and only that then just disregard it, if more than one you could try even numbers, then you will be sorted.........As I say, some people need to count there carbs right down to one decimal place, but if that's the case then pumping is the best option.... Try rounding up, record your results and then make a decision on whether you should be so accurate... |

Topic: General Discussion / BG Graphs Dont think I have came across a way either, this might be a bit technical but if you get the graph up on the screen so as you see it in its entirety, then hit the 'print screen' button, up the top right of the keyboard, open up paint or some similar picture editing tool, edit then paste..............this then pastes the graph as a picture which you can then save, you can then email them as picture attachment......not the best but works......... |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / How to download data from iphone app Hey![]() Open the app, tap Settings in bottom right corner, and turn on "Diary Upload". That should do it ![]() I run the app on my iPod Touch, so I have to wait until I am back home within the range of my Wireless router before anything gets uploaded, but if you have roaming internet - I assume that should upload from wherever you are. Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Spirits and Wines Hey![]() I generally only drink Tequila or Jack Daniels that I mix myself with diet lemonade. From what I can tell on the bottles, nothing seems to have been added to the mix. I stay away from pre-mixed drinks like WKD etc. As for the wines, I did actually make a mistake. I meant Dry and Sparkling white wines lol, not Sweet. I guess the Dry and Sparkling varieties would be much the same as the red wine regarding no carbohydrate? Lager I do drink, but not since starting DAFNE... the carbohydrate booklet states 1 CP for 1 pint (575ml), however the cans I have are 440ml , 135ml off being 1 pint. I need to work that one out before I start drinking those again, as I don't really want to be over or under dosing myself. The other problem being my syringes (I have owned NovoPen etc and disliked it:/) are 1unit increment, not 0.5, I need to sort that out as some things that are 1.5 CP I cant inject 1.5, I end up either not eating those foods or eating double or matching something to them to round the numbers up. Thanks again guys, really appreciate the help ![]() Stuart |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / How to download data from iphone app Hi All,I am a new DAFNE Graduate and have been using the iphone app to record by Testing results. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to download these results into my online diary? I hope there is a method because it will be a fools errand to transfer them one at a time. Kind regards Dr. Jamie Downing |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Mobile site released Is there a way to force the online version from the phone so I can add it as a favourite? Something like appending "/mobile"?Just started with the online entries and I'm finding it so much more useful than the paper version, especially for those days when the blood tests just keep on coming! |

Topic: General Discussion / local meetings Hi, interesting to hear these suggestions, it is something that has been discussed in the DAFNE User Action Group but not really moved forward. Part of the issue is contacting people in the local area. DAFNEOnline obviously has a user based but the general DAFNE graduate population is much higher. The big problem is only the local DAFNE eductators have any record of local graduates so its hard to make progress without their input. They tend to be VERY busy people who are very stretched and so don't always have time to assist. That said I'm 100% in favour of this idea and am happy to help in my DAFNE Centre, we even have our own 'free' venue to hold a get together since the local Diabetes charity built our Diabetes centre and allow us to use it in the evening for free. I'm in South East Kent. Lastly I would suggest people interested in organising something like this, post in their DAFNE Centre forum to gauge interest as this is the idea of the centre forums. Its worth keeping people updated in this forum but you are likely to find it easier to do the orgainsing in the local forums. I agree with Sarah, that is better graduate led because its more likely to occur and keep occuring with its 'driven' by the people its for rather than by the DAFNE Educator. I would still invite the educators to the meetings though ! |
