Topic: General Discussion / BG diary help please (2) (mum2westiesGill diary)

Thanks for your reply NRB. Corrections are a bit awkward to do seperately because i use the Accu-chek Aviva Expert meter & they are built in with the final dose amount. I am 1u to 3mmol.

Any help in identifying trends or any other help ie with targets & ratios will be greatly appreciated.

Also any help in saying whether I should be reducing or increasing my basal

Topic: General Discussion / Driving and blood glucose testing

I've tried a variety of solutions including keeping one in the car on the passenger seat but nothing beats the carrying one with you wherever you go method. I test whenever I get into the car (on the meter I carry with me). It really does become a habit with enough practice.

Surprises me that you can test up to two hours before and expect a valid "over 5 to drive result".

We have a similar law here which says that if you have a medical incident you lose your licence for 6 months! One GP suggested I could lose my licence as a "hypo" is an incident...define hypo! When I told him I have 3-4 most weeks I clarified what "hypo" meant but he was unable to categorically define it. The law called "Jett's law" was campaigned for by a police officer mother whose toddler son was run down and killed by a driver having a seizure. The terminology was broadened and made generic to include fainting spells, heart incidents etc but could also include a "hypo". Belief is that it would have to go to court to test the parameters of the law. Helen

In current conditions watch out for low temperatures in the car. You may be inconvenienced by the fact that your meter has gone on strike as the battery is too cold.
If possible, keep it on you...in a nice warm pocket.

Topic: General Discussion / Driving and blood glucose testing

That part of the text is same as before revised version, I was diagnosed in 2012 and the information I was given then stated the same. I plan long journeys in advance and look at where service stations are and which I can get to in my 2hour slots. Always prefer to use a service station rather than layby so have somewhere nice to sit if need to raise sugar levels!

Like Alan said surprised you're not already doing these tests!!

I'm surprised you're not already doing these tests. Perhaps you should think of it as possibly losing your licence and your job if you don't do these tests.

Topic: General Discussion / Driving and blood glucose testing

The new text in DIAB1 April 2013 revised version is:

I have insulin treated diabetes and I understand the need to test my blood glucose/sugar at times relevant to driving (not more than 2 hours before the start of the 1st journey and every 2 hours while driving. The object of this is to ensure the blood glucose is always above 5mmol/l per litre while driving).

I do about 20,000 miles a year and most of this is linked to my job. Having just sent the paperwork back to DVLA to renew my licence, I was made very aware of the changes for testing your sugars whilst driving. Up until last week, I had never carried my monitoring kit with me - it lived on one of the kitchen work surfaces. However, I am now the proud owner of 2 monitoring kits, and one is now permanently in my car. All I need to remember now is to actually use it!
Any tips from anyone - how do you remember to check your sugars before setting off on a car journey?

Topic: General Discussion / BG diary help please (2) (mum2westiesGill diary)

The only time I can see where there has been no carbs and therefore the only time to speculate about the basal is on Thursday, between 2:00 am and 10:08 am, which would suggest the basal is too due to your BG going from 10.2 to 6.8.......this wouldn't be enough alone to say for sure though........Smile.....

Don't know what corrections you have done either, so don't know what advice to give with your ratios either........

sorry........

Topic: General Discussion / Faulty Novopens

I've had no problems with Novapen 3's apart from the plunger sometimes not depressing smoothly, but that could be related to an awkward angle. I have two Novapen 4's as spares but have never used them (might be a good idea to try them before need to use them for real). However, I do leave them at home when away for a few days (but can get home again easily), but would probably take them on a longer trip or going a long distance - think these were prescribed by the DSN's on the DAFNE course.

And is it Ok to swop a part-used cartridge from one pen to another (thought I read somewhere to always use a new cartridge)? I suppose if I had to swop, then I would as don't usually have a spare cartridge at room temperature.

I've never had a problem with any pen I've used. I've had a cracked cartridge like Phil Masked and I do suffer on a regular basis with forgetting to take pens out like Wigworld. Only time I have had a plunger not fully depress was with the old novapen 2 when there were not enough insulin in the cartridge. It would let you dial up the amount you required but would not depress. The new pens stop at the amount of insulin left in the cartridge which is a great help. Well... sometimes if I remember to check before leaving home. If you do forget guys and girls to take any medication then around London, there are plenty of walk in centre's to pick up a prescription, any a and e department or NHS direct and they should be able to help with finding a doctor to prescribe and a pharmacy that will be open. The other thing you could do is ask your GP for an emergency prescription to carry with you in purse or wallet to use in emergencies. As you can I've used these a lot....

Topic: Questions for HCPs / BI dose

Hi John,

Again not an HCP, but I do exercise anaerobically. Consider your weightlifting as anaerobic exercise.

Anaerobic exercise can increase your BG, it sounds likely that the weight session is the cause for your BG increase rather than BI. Probably worth testing your BG on a rest day morning anyway though so you can isolate what's happening with your morning BG when you don't do weights.

One thing to be aware of is that, with Anaerobic exercise, it does increase your BG initially, but your BG may begin to drop 1-2 hours later because your liver needs to replenish it's glucose supply, so do be careful not to over correct with QA insulin.

Topic: General Discussion / Accu-Chek Multiclix lancet drum supply

Well after being told by them that these would be discontinued but couldn't tell me when, I suggested that it might be a good idea to put that on their website so people were aware and I got this reply which I am posting for information. Even though it is a shortage in only some areas I can't see why they can't make the info "public", however much I appreciate their individual response to me!

"We are sorry to hear that you are having difficulties obtaining Accu-Chek Multiclix lancets on prescription.

Due to a recent unexpected rise in demand , we have had some shortages regarding the Accu-Chek Multiclix lancets in some areas. However we are working to resolve this situation and in the meantime, we would like to offer you some assistance.

We are happy to inform you that we have sent a box of Accu-Chek Multiclix lancet drums today. Please allow up to 5 working days for delivery, all items are sent by Royal Mail Post.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused and anticipate that this should last you until the shortage in your area is resolved, however, if you do need further assistance in the future, please do not hesitate to call us again"

Good idea!
My flex pen failed on me so I changed to the Novo 4 cartridges and had no problem since Smile

Topic: General Discussion / Driving Licence Renewal

Karl said:
I have recently received a reminder that my 3 year medical driving licence will shortly be expiring. No problem there, fill the forms in and post it back, but on the form it states that by law I have to complete the enclosed Photo Renewal form (D797) - it wasn't enclosed.
Google returned nothing, so I emailed DVLA to get a reply stating

I would advise that you will not be required to submit the form D797 with your application.

I can confirm that there was an error when issuing your renewal reminder.

Just a warning if anybody else gets one.

Thanks for the heads up Smile

Topic: General Discussion / Human Interest stories around DAFNE

The DAFNE Executive are also looking for "Human Interest" stories around DAFNE e.g. how the course has helped you to cope with living with diabetes or achieve specific goals.

If you have an interesting story we'd be delighted to hear from you. Please send any contribution you have to me at [email protected]. The intention is to use these stories to help publicise DAFNE, and so they may be shared with external organisations. Please take this into account when writing and do not include any personal information in the text. Ideally the story should be submitted as a file (preferably in .doc format). The text may be of any length and it would be appreciated if contact details (name & e-mail address) are provided along with the story. This will allow any requests for additional or background information to be handled. Note that any request for contact with the author would be handled by a representative of the DAFNE Graduate Group or the DAFNE Executive. Your contact details will not be shared with any other organisations.

Many thanks for your input and I look forward to hearing what DAFNE graduates have achieved after attending the course.
