A lady diabetic called Rose
Once gave herself the wrong QA dose
From the hypo - she recovered
But in sweat she was smothered
And had a feeling that was very morose.

Diabetes can cause you some stress -
When the carbs in a meal you just guess.
But DAFNE can assist
And with its carbohydrate list
You're soon on the road to success.

A diabetic from somewhere in Surrey
Was in a bit of a hurry
'I skipped my first test'
He later confessed
After a hypo had caused colleagues to worry.

Hello Mike
If you keep an online Blood Glucose Diary on this site, include the entries for the last week or so, so that we can make comments and suggestions for improvements. This facility is just underneath the 'POST REPLY' box.

Topic: General Discussion / 7 Steps to Health

I watched it through to the end - it certainly is a long hard sell. I'm not convinced at all and this business of 'There's only 100 places left on the 7 Steps to Health course' reinforces my doubts.

Hello Susie
I think it would help us to make a judgement if you included your diary entries in your post - the option is beneath the area where you put your post.

Romance is in the air:

There once was a diabetic called Hector
Whose control was in the 'bad' sector,
So after much thought
Twas DAFNE he sought
Now he loves her and will never reject her.

There once was a diabetic called Jack
Whose approach to diabetes was slack
He was sent on a course
With DAFNE, of course
Now he says that he'll never look back.

There was a diabetic from Penzance
Whose control was much left to chance
So then DAFNE took over
He thought 'I just love her'
So this was the start of a romance.

A diabetic from across the Atlantic
Had control that made him quite frantic,
To DAFNE he was sent
A week with her he spent
Now he loves her - it's really romantic.

There once was a diabetic called Evans
Whose BGs were all fours to sevens
His partner, said 'Dai -
You know that's a lie -
You're not going to get to Heaven'.

A diabetic called Rab caught the flu
A condition, for him, that was new
His doctor said 'Rab -
You missed your flu-jab
That's really important for you'.

Diabetes is a demanding condition
Good blood-sugar is the ideal position
You test, you inject
The result's not what you expect?
Then DAFNE can help in your mission.

There was a young diabetic from Spain
Whose injections gave him some pain
'I don't think I'll bother'
'You will!' said his mother
'I'm not going to tell you again'.

Topic: General Discussion / Dafne Diary - looking for some comments / help

Hello Gill
Your carb estimation and your overall control don't look too bad to me, considering you haven't done the DAFNE course. I reckon most of us get the occasional high and low readings. I would urge you to enter your CPs and Ratios in the table - which make it a lot easier to spot if things start going wrong. The system will tell you if you've got the format wrong and give you useful guidance on how to enter it correctly.

I thinks it's important to do a blood test before bed, as well. This could prevent any night-time hypos you may get.

Also - get yourself on a DAFNE course ASAP

Alan

I need help - I can't seem to stop thinking about Limericks. I think I've got Limerickitis - does anyone know a good Limerickologist?

A music-mad diabetic called Peter
Spent most of his time on his geetar
His podiatrist said 'Pete -
You've neglected your feet
And you know how important your feet are'

There once was a diabetic called Margaret
Whose blood-sugars were well over target.
On DAFNE she went
And you know what that meant -
Now most of her readings are great.

I am not qualified to give advice, but I find it useful to enter the total CPs, BI and the ratios in the table part of the diary. This makes it easier to spot trends and then make decisions where needed. I also enter my bedtime BGs and any corrections in the table. I also keep a separate list of meals and my CP estimates which I can refer to before I inject.

My immediate observation is that you don't seem to be taking any Background Insulin - is that the case?

Yes John - Limericks have 5 lines.

I have another one ('Oh No!' I hear you groan):

A diabetic fell out with his G.P.
'Too many strips you are using' said he
The diabetic insisted -
'You're being ham-fisted -
Good control means I'll be complications-free'.

It doesn't scan properly, but I claim 'poetic licence'.

Well done, John. Here's another one:

A diabetic asleep on the patio
Had the unlikely name of Horatio
His control was all at sea -
He had a high HBA1C
Because he was on the wrong ratio.

Nice one, Derek.

A DAFNE diabetic called Hazel
Woke up one morning feeling nasal
The cold in her nose
Meant an increased QA dose
And also a slight rise in her basal

I thought I'd lighten the proceedings with some diabetic-related jokes:

Who is the patron saint of diabetics and railway stations? St Pancreas

Which large African animal sounds like a diabetic problem and also its possible solution?
A hippopotamus - Hypo - potato mass (apologies for that one)

There once was a diabetic called Rab
Who treated himself to a kebab
He didn't have chips
Because of his hips
And therefore didn't require a jab

Topic: General Discussion / Eating Out - help needed please to stop my panic

I would be a bit nervous about doing that - I'm a 'what if' person. What if you get caught in traffic; what if your car breaks down; what if you're meeting someone at the restaurant and they get delayed; what if there's a cock-up with your order. What if.... I could go on and on here.

Topic: General Discussion / Aviva test strips

I noticed this some months ago - so no more faffing around with new coding chips, a major step forward in my opinion.

What I like most about it is that if I'm getting to the end a pot of strips, I can just put the remainder in a new pot and not have to worry about taking a new pot - plus the coding chip - with me if I'm going out. I always put the old strips in upside down, so I can use these first, but I'm sure that's not really necessary.

Topic: General Discussion / Levemir clogging needles

Sorry Andy, that won't work for me because the Levemir cartridges have the thread for the needle, where the Humalog cartridges don't, so the two pens are different.

I've used the spare Novopen for two days and had no problems - so it looks as if the old pen wasn't performing too well.
