Topic: General Discussion / Freestyle Libre

I don't think they are available in Ireland, yet... they had stopped the roll out to different countries due to the heavy demand in countries that they had been launched in. Hopefully they will be sorting this out soon. Amazingly they didn't realise there would be such a huge demand for them. They are talking to the NHS about them being available on prescription but it will be a long slow process.....

Topic: General Discussion / SPLITTING LANTUS DOSE

Have to agree with the other posts, if you want to split your background insulin then you should be switching to Levemir which is often used in split doses, Lantus is known to last longer which is why not many people split it. If you are needing to split it then its probably more than just exercise that is causing the issue.

Topic: General Discussion / think I cracked dawn phenomenon

Hi, I wish I was part of the 'pump sales team' Very Happy ( although the comment has probably been taken out of context), I have similar issues, my consultant has said he wants me to go on a pump but there is no money to do it so I have to wait.
Sorry but I also disagree that its another health issue, if it is then I have the same thing ! I am also struggling to find a solution and for reasons I cannot explain eating in the evening DOES affect my BG the next morning. Of course a Freestyle libre would help provide more consistent evidence. I had a trial one for 28 days and it showed the classic Dawn Phenomenon, but not every night which is why I'm not 100% convinced a pump will fix it but it certainly won't make it worse. I'm not sure I can handle the smoothie with raw veg in it though Sad the fruit and nut I would love though.

Topic: General Discussion / GLUCOMEN BLOOD GLUCOSE METER

Hi, If you want to email me using the contact us at the bottom of the page or use the message inbox in the right-hand menu and let me know where in SE Kent you are. I live in SE Kent, I am also involved in Diabetes UK and attended the PCT ( as then was) and CCG ( as they are now) sessions on selecting meters. It was made crystal clear in these meetings that Type 1's could continue to use their current meters and would NOT be forced to change. This is not general policy in the area and my GP gave me an option to change but did not try to force me in any way. I have contacts in the structures of the local CCG's were I am, I would be happy to help in anyway I can to stop this happening, its NOT acceptable that anyone should be forced to change their meter, its short sighted and stupid and really annoys me Twisted Evil

Topic: General Discussion / morning blood sugar rise

Hi, Sorry but must disagree with Caspar, splitting your BI does not mean you can take less. You body doesn't absorb BI quickly because its not able to quickly so timing of dose is not really relevant in that respect. With BI its in your system but is not 'active' fully the whole time, the idea is it has a slow 'release' profile to be in your blood over an extended period. It is not totally consistent over time for everyone true but is largely a lot slower than QA. I would never advise anyone to split their dose without consulting their Diabetes team. One thing often recommended if you want to split doses is a switch to Levemir, since Lantus does have a longer profile even though both are supposedly 24 hour insulins. If you skip breakfast and your BG raises by 10 then its pretty clear your BI is not correct, you can use QA to try to adjust but its a constant battle, its better to try to get your BI right, which means if you skip meals it stays roughly the same. Also although Dawn Phenomenon can to a degree alter your BG during the morning its effects are generally more noticeable overnight, your BG rises just BEFORE you wake up. Again its true everyone is slightly different so there is no one answer.

Topic: General Discussion / Cyborg Times (new BG meter)

Hi, I quick update on this. No I don't have any more sensors yet Sad but 'Dafneonline' had a conference call with one of their marketing team the other day on another subject so I took the opportunity to be nosey Very Happy

They are still struggling to fulfil all the orders for sensors and are working their way through the waiting list. Once you reach the top of the list you will be contacted via email and once 'subscribed' will be able to order a regular supply of sensors. They don't want to send people a device and sensors only for them then not to be able to order any more sensors. This seems reasonable enough to me. Once you do get subscribed you are guaranteed to get sensors.

They launched the device in seven European countries and in everyone they have had to shutdown the webshop due to overwhelming demand. In the UK they didn't do ANY pre-publicity and still the web shop was overwhelmed in the first two days. They want to launch it in more countries but can't until they increase production. It has been a much bigger success than they expected, but it comes as no surprise to me and other T1's that see the potential benefits.

They are working with the NHS and still believe they CAN get it on prescription due to the demonstrable improvements in HBA1c and overall reduction in Hypo's. So what this space it's possible it could eventually be available on prescription Laughing .

Topic: Questions ? / Accessing Dafne

sadly the closest centre is probably Reading. Sad

You might want to direct her to the BERTIE programme and its website here . Its based in Bournemouth which is closer ( well depending on where in Hampshire ) and has a web version as well. Its not DAFNE but we all deserve some form of Diabetes Education whatever form it takes.

Topic: General Discussion / DiAthlete - an inspiration

On Saturday we did a DAFNE Online presentation at Addenbrooke's Hospital Cambridge for their patient day. However we were just the warm up act for the next speaker who was billed as the 'inspirational speaker'. I must admit to being a bit dubious when I saw this on the agenda, but no they were right Shocked . The speaker was Gavin Griffiths who is also known as diAthlete and his story should be an inspiration to us all. He was diagnosed as Type 1 at 8 years old and like most of us spent the next 8-9 years being told what he could not do and got increasingly frustrated by this. Unlike most of us, he decided he was going to prove all these people wrong. His first way of doing this was to run 29 miles in 3 hours for charity. He then just took on more and more challenging tasks. Probably the biggest of which was to run from John O'Groats to Lands End, 30 miles for 30 days. As he said to us, Eddie Izzard does it and the whole of the UK media are there, a Type 1 diabetic does it and hardly anyone cares ( not even the national Diabetes Charity, but lets not go there). He has plans for bigger challenges yet and listening and chatting to him just shows you what you can achieve if you DON'T let all those people who tell you Type 1 limits you !! Respect !

Please check out his website http://www.diathlete.org and look out for him. One of the things we chatted about was the medical exemption card fiasco and he is fighting the fines made for not having a valid card. He was one of those fined for not having one despite moving from juvenile care ( where you don't need one) to adult care and never being told he actually needed one. He has got the fine refunded for people and is now fighting to get back the cost of the prescriptions that he should not have had to pay for. As with his running challenges, he is not letting people discriminate against him just because he is T1 !! Respect Again.

The only bad thing I can say about him, is his life's ambition was to play for Crystal Palace, which just proves no one is perfect Wink

Topic: General Discussion / Cyborg Times (new BG meter)

Hi,
With regards to the 8 hour limit, the sensor that sits on your arm can only hold 8 hours of data, so if you don't swipe it with the reader for longer than 8 hours the oldest readings a lost i.e those just before or just after you went to sleep. This wasn't a big issue for me since generally my readings are usually stable just before I go to bed. With regards to swimming, I would have to see if anyone else has an answer. I showered every day with it on and never had an issue but I didn't go swimming. My guess is if it is properly fixed and you can tell it is, then it should be ok. It would be interesting to hear first hand experience though Wink

Topic: General Discussion / Cyborg Times (new BG meter)

Is anyone actually getting any sensors from Abbot on subscription, their website continues with its usual high standards Evil or Very Mad
On a related note are you paying full price ? or without the VAT as you should be, obviously the link on the Abbot site doesn't work and they don't make it clear but as Type 1 diabetics you DO NOT pay VAT on the sensors since they are specific to your condition and you do not pay VAT on any Diabetes equipment. Their FAQ says the price DOES include VAT and therefore you can be exempt from this. In theory they should ask for evidence of your diabetes but I wouldn't be shocked to find they don't. I would be interested if anyone has
tried to get the VAT back and obviously if the subscription actually works. I have not signed up for it as yet since so many people were indicating they were not producing enough sensors.

Topic: General Discussion / Trying to lose weight?

Its the same effect, peanuts don't contain carbs just protein. In theory that gets converted to BG so slowly that your BI will cover it, but Diabetes is full of theories that don't necessarily translate to reality. We are ALL different and react slightly different to different things like Insulin, food, illness etc etc

Topic: General Discussion / Trying to lose weight?

I would also try 1) in the post above i.e trying to skip lunch if you can and then testing your BG. I think you also need to be a bit more precise. By this I mean what time do you
eat and what time do you check 'mid-afternoon' ? The reason for saying this is it may give more of a clue as to what is going on. While Protein can be converted to sugar it is not the
bodies first option because it is more complex and takes time. You can't consider protein as the same as carbs when assessing its impact on BG. If you can say when you eat,
how much and when you test that will give us more details to try to advise.
The amount is also relevant, I remember well my DAFNE Course when I showed my results and said I may have been a bit higher due to eating Monkey Nuts the evening before, the
dietician said, ooh a handful won't make a difference. I said no the whole bag, to which she seemed shocked but the other guys on the course all said, yes of course the whole bag why
would you eat just a handful. One persons normal is another's excessive ;-)

Topic: General Discussion / Another step closer to the Artificial Pancreas

You would assume that it is some kind of CGM but not in the way you would expect it. It detects low BG but thats it, so it could be just a sensor that returns a 1 for low BG and and 0 otherwise. This would be a lot simpler than the CGM's that actually record the BG level.
Also at £10K it would need to get a lot cheaper a lot quicker to become viable. So not really an artificial pancreas but a step on the road to one.
BTW, the changed the link in the original post so you could click on the link and removed the marketing tracking information in it.....

Topic: General Discussion / BI

word of caution, as ever, if you consider splitting your BI dose discuss this with your Diabetes team first. Generally people split BI dose when on Levimir rather than Lantus, since Lantus does tend to last longer. Its not impossible to split Lantus just a bit more unusual.
I agree that exercise may wel lbe increasing your BG. Also remember that exercise can cause your BG to drop for around 24 hours so
it may be a reason for the drop overnight rather than just BI being too high.
Sadly there is no 'correct' answer so experimentation is the only way to test how it works on you as an individual....

Topic: General Discussion / Persona Non Grata with Diabetes

totally agree and that is what the book seems to be about i.e what others ( and often the medical profession) see as Diabetes rather than the reality of living with it every day.....

Topic: General Discussion / Persona Non Grata with Diabetes

All, I was recently asked to publicise this via my Diabetes UK Group but offered to promote it here as well. It's a book written by a T1 about life with T1. It won't give you advice about managing your diabetes, however it will show you that we ALL have the same problems in life as a Diabetic. I am happy to promote anyone who is trying to do something positive about Diabetes. You can find the authors website here:

http://www.pngwd.com/

you can download it from Amazon for the bargain price of £1.49 at the moment here: Persona Non Grata with Diabetes

I have downloaded my copy and have just started reading it. I must say I identify with a lot of what he says already.....

Topic: General Discussion / Freestyle Libre

Hi, As Peter says there is a long discussion on the device where he said, a couple of things though. Despite what you may think, using NFC and allowing any app to access it will probably never happen. Not because companies are greed but because medical licensing authorities won't allow it. Some of your ire should be directed in their direction as they set the rules that Drug Companies follow. In an idea world they wouldn't need to set these rules, but we live in a litigation world were you can sue anyone for anything which is why they are so nervous.
On the otherhand I totally agree about Abbott's development and support, I have had several attempts to get them to explain the logic of holding all the data on the meter/reader only and they
don't see a problem. I think we may have to wait until a competitor comes on the market we might see a bit more pressure to produce a better and cheaper product then.

Topic: General Discussion / How long do carbs take to 'process'

Hi, I think the reason that there is nothing that tells you is that there is no straightforward answer. Everyone is different and food is processed by their bodies differently, so any answer for you may not apply to me and vice-versa. There are also lots of other factors like previous exercise and illness etc, etc, bummer huh ? Life would be so much simplier if it was all consistent and everyone was the same.
The only real answer is experimentation to see how things work for you . The GI will give you some idea but it is a guide not a hard and fast rule.

Topic: General Discussion / Cyborg Times (new BG meter)

why would you do it ? Because there is no better way, you can't test BG continuously in a cost effective manner. You can, almost, do it with these kind of devices. The fact that it may be 10 mins out from your actual BG is largely irrelevant because we can't accurately test BG anyway. All a finger prick does is give you a rough estimate, so why not use something that is no worse BUT lets you view post meal spikes and the general pattern of your BG. I'm not entirely sure why it confuses people, but then I have been lucky enough to be able to use one for two weeks and seen the benefit.

On the negative side, abbott don't see that holding all the data on the meter only as being a problem, they confirmed this to me in an email this week. Personnally I find this amazing and very poor, they might have a great new device but their software support is worse than rubbish in my opinion and is putting me off using the device in the long term. Manybe the next company to release one will be more enlightened.

Lastly the response on injecting near the sensor site was 'I am not aware of any specific research done on injections around the area of insertion of the sensor. It should be discussed each time with a healthcare proffessional each time before injection. It seems to be advisable to inform HCP before any medical procedure that such a sensor is been placed.' Not a very good response in my opinion. Others have praised the Abbott support, my experience is that its not very good at all but maybe I'm asking the wrong questions Confused

Topic: General Discussion / Cyborg Times (new BG meter)

Update: I am still chasing Abbott for a response on backup of device data but their customer service doesn't seem to have improved since the launch of the device. Working in IT as I do, backups come to be a bit of an obsession so I would really like an answer from them. To remind you it seems to keep all of the data on the device and does not transfer it to the PC. The PC software they provide only works with the device connected to the PC and doesn't appear to transfer the data onto the PC. Yes you can create PDF's but that is not, to me, an acceptable means of backing up my data. The device holds 90 days of data apparently which is a lot to loose if you mis place the meter.

Topic: Site Development / A bug?

still does it for me ! What browser are you using and what version is it. It could be a bug with the broswer compatibility. I will need to check how it does it since we wrote it about 4 years
ago and it has never intentionally been changed :-)
