Topic: General Discussion / Spam thanks, but we both work in IT and know what the issue is. Sadly it is harder and harder to stop. The spam we are getting is generally NOT automated. We do have catchpa's etc, but all of these measures are relatively easily bypassed. There ARE ways to reduce SPAM but until ISP's and big email providers take the issue seriously and implement them it's very hard to block SPAM, especially on a site run with no finance to pay for filtering packages. |

Topic: Questions ? / Anxiety and depression Hi, I'm with everyone else ( I guess would be :-) ) don't worry about it. The most interest thing I have is I am now lucky to enough to have a pump. No public injections just questions about my weird little device I play with at Meal times. The only time I expect looks but never seem to get them, is when I go through Airport security. i take the pump off and put it through the scanner, then collect it the other side. i stand there and re-attach what look like wires to my body and no one has ever really paid any attention or questioned me !When I had to do injections I just got on with it and didn't make a fuss and generally no one took any notice. I appreciate that it is easy to say don't worry about it, but I always found it was an opportunity to explain about Diabetes, what it is and why I had to inject. People are usually interested and sympathetic and rarely judge you..... |

Topic: General Discussion / Flash and continuous monitoring Hi, I should point out that this is a totally personal point of view and does not reflect the DAFNE Programme view OR necessarily Dafneonline. So with that out of the way, I would say the people lucky enough to have Flash or CGM's are unlikely to be typical DAFNE graduates by a long way, they are likely to be a minority at best. They are of course entitled to their opinions however the vast majority are not going to get access to this technology anytime soon , so why invest a huge amount of effort adjusting the course for a few people. Wow controversial I know but reality I think. As it happens I was chatting yesterday with my Consultant and she told me if I wanted to get the Freestyle Libre on the NHS I needed to test 8 times a day for a month. Apparently the Libre is then cheaper than test strips for the NHS and she can prescribe it. Great logic huh ? She was not convinced it was the best CGM anyway. Apparently Medtronic are just releasing a new pump a 670 ( I have a 640) and it will have an integrated CGM. The sensors for it will cost around £450 per year and are more accurate than the Libre. However again she/we would need to convince the NHS to pay the extra £650 on the base cost of the pump. Then again I guess the majority don't even have pumps so again maybe not relevant. There is a new DAFNE Course and it will probably include a device to make getting readings into a system easier probably via bluetooth. However I don;t know what stage they have got to with it and again personally I think they are chasing the wrong idea but such is life,,,,, |

Topic: General Discussion / Dosage auto-calculation in apps Hi, Thank you for sharing your opinion, i think what you need to realise is it is just your opinion not fact. Maintaining paper diaries might well suit you well that doesn't mean its the best solution for all. Also to correct you I don't believe illiteracy relates to not being able to do mathsThe App doesn't need to be condoned by a medical institution and was never not condoned. We removed the auto-calculation feature because that is classed as providing medical advice and any application that does this requires licensing and a lot of advanced testing that we as 'home' developers could not under take. Lastly are you a software engineer ? If not what engineering advice can you provide on the App ? Do you understand object oriented programming or REST API's ? If not you are no more qualified to comment on it than anyone else. We are always happy for offers of assistance or constructive advice that can benefit all users of the App, so feel free to offer advice. |

Topic: General Discussion / Mobile app for Samsung/Android advice Hi, Sorry there is no Android app currently, the old one was dropped by google because it was not updated. I am trying to get a new one running but there have been major changes in the way the app needs to work and I'm struggling to make it work properly. I will update everyone as and when I have resubmitted it to the play store.... |

Topic: General Discussion / Continuous Glucose Monitors in Australia Like my fellow diabetic in South East Kent, I look on with envy at what they are planning to do in Oz. In the UK the NHS and Abbott agreed to provide their CGM ( freestyle libre) on the NHS. Sadly that's as far as it went as none of the Health Trusts in the UK can afford to provide them. I think the key phrase in the Oz scheme is 'Clinical need' , just like in the UK that translates to you have to have very poor control and complications before they will provide a CGM by which time what you need is surgery not a device..... |

Topic: General Discussion / Difference between user, graduate and hcp? sorry just noticed this thread . The replies are mostly spot on. There are a set of type of user 'types' that have different access. The type called 'user' can join the site, contribute to the forums, access the Carb counter section and Diary sections. The only thing they cannot do is access the handbook because in the UK the NHS body won't allow it and we had to sign a legal clause that said we would not allow people who have not done DAFNE to access it. that is why when you sign up you need to enter a code if you are a graduate that has been generated by the centre you attended on this site. The graduate user type has access to all features except the ability to generate codes, to do that you need to be a HCP or DAFNE Admin user type. Finally on top of it all are simon and I who manage the site and have access to everything. We are happy and indeed encourage ANY diabetic to use the site and apps to manage their blood glucose readings and given the choice would allow access to the handbook as well but rules are rules |

Topic: General Discussion / Dawn phenomenon One suggestion i would have, that's not easy, is to try to get referred for a pump. I had very similar issues and diagnosed it as suggested with a freestyle libre. I took the reports it produced to my consultant who agreed it was DP and referred me for a pump. Since I have been in the pump it's all but disappeared. One of the reasons for this is the slow drop feed of insulin that absorbs more evenly and makes life a lot easier in all respects not just DP. I would still raise it with your consultant even without the freestyle if you don't have one, they should recognise the issue and recommend a pump. |

Topic: General Discussion / URGENT ADVICE NEEDED - Lancet Devices - Discontinuation of One Touch Comfort Lancets I would encourage you to try to get your DSN's to sort the issue out. Its pointless ( pun intended) to give you lancets that don't fit the device you have. Other people have recommended the SD codefree to me however I would only do it via prescription. I really object to paying for diabetes equipment it should be provided by the NHS, I have spent enough years paying taxes for it and we should NOT be funding our own equipment. If it means throwing the odd hissy-fit at the GP's then you gotta do what you gotta do |

Topic: General Discussion / Libre to be available on the NHS..... I agree with novarapidboi and suspect your GP is bending the truth. I'm not sure the devices are actually on the NHS price list yet, it has not come out this month yet and even then there needs to be discussions in the NHS on this. When I recently had an issue with my GP and tried to complain to the CCG I was told they have no interface to GP's they just commission services i.e pay people like hospital consultants to provide their diabetics with appointments. Its debatable if this extends to dictating what a surgery can and cannot prescribe to patients. Hopefully things will clarify over the next few months and we will see if ANY area of the country is actually prescribing them to patients. If they are not then the whole exercise has been completely pointless as having them available and not letting anyone have them is the same as them not being available.... |

Topic: General Discussion / DAFNE Course Material absolutely !! Bertie is worth checking and speak to your Diabetes team about structured education , everyone should be offered it and its not just DAFNE. It depends on where you live but everyone should have access to some kind of education and a lot of courses ( including DAFNE) do 5 x 1 day courses over 5 weeks. |

Topic: General Discussion / Living Alone with Type 1 Hi, Just thought I would chip in. Now I don't live alone so I can't really put myself in your position, however I travel a fair bit for work and am often 'alone' in hotels for the night. One thing to make clear is a hypo is pretty unlikely to kill you, generally if you have a hypo and go unconscious you WILL recover once your liver pumps out some glucogen. You would have to over dose your insulin by quiet a bit for it to be that serious. That's not intended to dismiss your concerns, its just trying to re-assure you and having people to check on you would not be a bad thing. In this day and age I would suggest that you could manage with a mobile and a text message if you don't mind sharing your mobile number with these people. It might be more flexible than them checking curtains etc.Have you had many night time hypo's ? I ask because mine usually result in me not being able to sleep, having my mind whirling through a thousand things at which point I always think, hold on check your BG you should be sleeping and I have a few carbs to get me back on track..... |

Topic: General Discussion / Libre to be available on the NHS..... Hi,Not wishing to be negative but it could be a while before you can actually get Libre sensors on the NHS. I asked my consultant at Guy's about it at my pump appointment. She said that although it was going on to the NHS price lists in November there is still a lot of discussion going on to identify who should be eligible for the sensors and what the criteria should be. There is a LOT of work going on in the NHS about this but its complicated and given the price Abbott want per sensor from the NHS it can't be available for everyone. She said if they cost the same as blood test strips then they would be more than happy for everyone to get them but at the current cost the NHS just can't afford to let everyone have them. I can understand this position and am very disappointed in Abbott. Sounds like they are just chasing the money and not taking the wider view of getting more people on them giving them a long term revenue stream. I guess the reality is other companies will soon launch similar devices and if they all get approved for the NHS then the cheapest will win. It sounds to me like another post code lottery in the making..... |

Topic: Questions ? / morninghypers Hi,Could be a number of things. Firstly what BI do you take and are you injecting it just once a day ? Its possible its BI but not necessarily. It could be something called Dawn Phenomenon which is where you body pumps around lots of chemicals to wake you up and get you going after sleep. I detected this with a Freestyle Libre ( see other forum posts). I would check BI first though... |

Topic: General Discussion / DAFNEplus Survey As you may or may not know the next version of DAFNE called DAFNEplus is currently in the research stage. This means a new version of the course will be developed and then 'tested' to see if it gives better results than the current version. Part of this 'research' is a survey that we have been asked to promote on DAFNEOnline. To quote themThe survey opened last week and will close at the end of October 2017. It's open to 18-75 year olds with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Our aim is to assess various diabetes specific quality of life measures. There are more details here on the webpage ( http://www.yoursay.org.au/ ) and also in our blog post - https://dafneplusresearch.wordpress.com/2017/09/05/dafneplus-have-your-say-on-quality-of-life/ So please do go and fill it in and it may influence DAFNE Courses in the future........ |

Topic: General Discussion / Graduation Hi,If you tell us which DAFNE Centre ( or hospital) you did the course at we can get you checked as having done the course. Not our rules ! The people who run DAFNE insist that only people who have done the course can access the handbook online. It usually only takes a few days once we know which centre you did the course at. |
