Topic: Questions ? / wound healing

good luck Helen. Its always better, I think, to know what that the problem is rather than the worry of not knowing. Hopefully these tests will help them to decide on the best course of action.

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Red Wine

it always lowers my BG thats why I like drinking it ( well one of the reasons ;^) ). However the occasional bottle raises it, I suspect due to additives in the wine. As Garry says which wine was it and does it do it with all the red wines you drink ?

just a reminder that in the Carb Counter section of the website is a list of websites that have carb info, including the one above. You are of course welcome to post them here as well, just wanted to remind people....

Topic: General Discussion / BI Changes

My understanding is that BI should keep your BG constant in the absence of any carbs i.e fasting. It is supposed to handle your bodies background requirements for insulin. Although your requirements may change this would happen over months not days. Once your BI is about right you should only need to vary your QA, I agree with others the effect of changing your BI can take days to become apparent so if you
keep changing it day after day you are not seeing the true effect of the change. I would try sticking to say 19 (half-way) for at least 3-4 days and then considering a change if you are high or low, its also worth missing a meal and seeing what your BG does this will give a better idea of if you BI is right.

Topic: General Discussion / Job Hunting

sorry but I would like to meet the person who is completely honest in the recruitment process. OK so its a question of degrees of honesty but having been both the interviewee and interviewer many times, people say what they think you want to hear not necessarily what is completely 100% accurate. I would never declare my diabetes it is none of the prospective companies business, unless they explicitly ask and it turns out the cannot you have not been dishonest by not telling them.
Good luck with the job hunting, the most important thing is to stay positive and believe something will come along. I'm sure it will.

Topic: General Discussion / Please sing to the tune of "How do you like your eggs in the Morning?"

I would just like to add, thank you for rasing these issues and please feel free to do so on our site. I think challenging people to change is a good thing and is one of the key things for DAFNE i.e change the the perception that Diabetics cannot eat certain things, do certain things.
I agree we can all get set in our ways and find it hard to kick habits but with encouragement we can.
I am pleased that someone from the HCP side is again being so pro-active, it helps dispell the idea that some have that the medical profession are all people that don't understand diabetics. I'm not referring to people on this site, before people get upset by my comments !
Brum_taffy are you involved in the DAFNE programme ? I only ask because it would help to have you 'labelled' on the site as a HCP, however I guess I can only do that if you are invovled in DAFNE, unless of course I get permission from the DAFNE programme people to make you a HCP. The reason for needing permission is the access to some of the parts of the site that only DAFNE HCP's have.
The more HCP's we have contributing the better, especially in the 'Questions for HCPs' forum where people often ask Diabetes related questions and having a Diabetes expert rather than other Diabetics answer is often more re-assuring.

Topic: General Discussion / "Diabetes results to you" Your help requested

Hi the link points to the correct place, the same place as you originally posted. I just didn't put the full text on the link in the bit that shows on screen.
I'm sure you 'can' send SMS for medical info but I presume it has to be opt in and I would not but that's just a personal opinion.

Topic: General Discussion / "Diabetes results to you" Your help requested

Its nice to see a Diabetes Team doing something so proactive and different, I wish my local PCT was prepared to do something like this. I personally prefer the one on the right. It ties in with all these food labelling initiatives and so hopefully would be more identifiable for most people. At my PCT I still have to ask for all my results including my HBA1c, this sometimes suprises the staff they don't seem to be used to Diabetics having an active interest in their cholesterol etc. It would be great to be sent them so I could easily keep a record of them all.
I think there are potentially data protection issues with sending them via SMS/email. Without being too boring and technical, both methods are insecure and I would not be happy for my personal medical information to be sent in this way. But then I'm paranoid and work with IT security, sorry.
BTW I changed your original post so people can click on the link in it and go direct to your site.

Topic: Site Development / DAFNE Online iPhone application - help with content/design needed

Guys, Sorry but progress with the Android version has not been as fast as I would hope. I have been distracted by the other DAFNE/Diabetes stuff I'm involved with and the Android Development environment is not as mature as that of the iphone. I will let everyone know when I have something that you can test.
I'm afraid there might be an issue Jez with any other versions. The IPR on the app and all related stuff rests with the site NOT with the DAFNE national organisers. I'm sorry if this sounds a bit heavy handed, but we have not been able to use the carb lists in the app because the DAFNE national organisers own the copyright. We are having to sign an agreement to be able to use it in the app. For this reason I see no reason why Simon should give all his hard work to them without a reciprocal agreement. To be honest I don't see them having the resource to get anything developed anyway. Simon and I are IT developers, there is no one in the national office who understands software, nor how you go about getting any kind of application developed.
We hope to develop the app for other platforms eventually, however we both have day jobs and other distractions that stop us working
on the site full time.

Topic: General Discussion / Dafne refresher courses

I don't think the refresher course being referred to in tihs thread is the same as the refresher course I was talking about, yours sounds more like the 6 week and 6 month get togethers after the original course. It may be that your DAFNE centre does them on a continual basis on over a number of years I don't know. Most centres do not do this due to funding I believe.

Kentbabe, your 6 monthly as cancelled because your Educator had problems outside work as well as a very heavy workload. She has promised to contact theose that had their meeting cancelled in the near future. I only know because its my DAFNE Centre and someone I know locally was in the same situation and wanted me to find out what was happening.

Topic: General Discussion / Shortage of test strips

Alan, I wasn't clear enough. For example as you say Accu-chek strips are manufactured in Germany. When they are manufactured they are labelled for each market they are destined for i.e UK packs have UK leaflets and labels, Greek packs have greek labels and leaflets. We in the UK talk to the greek pharmacuetical wholesalers who can sell their strips to us for less than it costs in the UK even with the import costs. We therefore import them into the UK and open the packs, replace the leaflets and stick on an english label and then sell them to UK pharmacies. This is completely legal and normal practice. Its more likely with insulin, on many occasions my novarapid or levemir pens would have white labels stuck on them with english details rather than having the english text 'embossed' onto the pen. This tells me they have been imported. With my current pharmacy the english info is always 'embossed' onto the pens so I know they are not imported. The insulin inside is exactlythe same, its just its has been on a journey.
Given the changes in the euro etc, it is possible the trade is going in the other direction as well, the wholesalers can make money by selling
UK drugs into the rest of the EU and this could potentially cause shortages in the UK market. I wasn't aware it was happening though, my company only imports at the moment we don't export.

Topic: General Discussion / type 1 during pregnancy- help!

Claire, you are more likely to get an answer to this question if you post it in the 'Questions for HCPs' forum. Obviously its not a situation I will ever be in but as I understand it you insulin requirements should return to normal after pregnancy. If you don't get a response on the other forums I would suggest you discuss your concerns with your DAFNE educator or your Diabetes Team, these people should be experts on the subject and hopefully explain all the likely changes to you.
Congratulations and good luck by the way....

Topic: General Discussion / Shortage of test strips

ah, but Alan what they probably didn't tell you was the drugs then get imported back into the UK and sold in the UK. Its often cheaper to source branded drugs in the EU and then relabel them for the UK market. This is common practice and so drugs being restricted by the makers in the UK would not really affect the market hugely. However as I say I have had the problem as well so I'm as interested as you to know why. What we need is a mole in the manufacturers company to tell us what is really going on. Sadly I don't know anyone, does any one else ?

Hi Jennifer Iden, yes its me you contact about being 'promoted' from a user to a graduate, just contact me via the 'contact us' link at the
bottom of every page or via the 'message inbox' in the right hand menu. We can then sort out what details we need from you to do it.

Topic: General Discussion / Dafne refresher courses

Yes novaraidboi, but the refresher course is not aimed at people like you. Its aimed at people that don't frequent internet forums and didn't necessarily find the DAFNE Course easy to follow. Its also not easy for some of us to have a constant liason with our Diabetic team, there is a post code lottery out there you know ;-)
I think there IS a need for some to attend a refresher course, however as I said its just a trial at the moment and a long way from becoming standard practice. There is no evidence base for a refresher course like there is the original course so it would be a lot harder to sell to PCTs and also its unclear if it will provide any benefits. Only time will tell.
I think the DAFNE drop in is a good idea though and it woudl be good if other centres could find the resources to do them.

Topic: General Discussion / Dafne refresher courses

I don't think the refresher course is widely available at the moment it is still a 'trial' to see how well it works. Its interesting to hear about the drop-in idea I wonder if any other DAFNE centres do this. Anyone ?

Topic: General Discussion / Hello!

well done, keep it up ! the sub 4.0's are a bit low but I often do the same without a problem. It can be a slow process getting it all 'right' and even then we all have little 'blips' where our BG's go a little bit off target. But overall keeping to the DAFNE principles is going to offer big
benefits in the long term as well as allow us the flexibility to eat more of what we like when we like !

Topic: General Discussion / DAFNE Online user poll..........

yes, it is in place on the DAFNE website and they are gradually rolling out new literature with the new logo and strapline. There is a new handbook and carb book in the pipeline but how soon we will get it I'm not sure.

Topic: General Discussion / Shortage of test strips

I had problems with one touch ultra strips in a similiar manner. However a new chemist opened nearer to me, I switched to them and have not had a problem since. I would consider a different chain of chemists just to see if you get the same problems. I find it hard to believe a chain the size of Lloyd's cannot get a continuous supply of strips from one of the biggest manufacturers of them !

Topic: General Discussion / Giving Blood

I think its pretty unlikely to be genes, since we don't really know what causes Type 1 for sure. They are not going to stop us because of that. Its more likely that its because we have to inject needles into ourselves all the time and needles are a primary source of infections/diseases. This is a bit unfair since we are hardly the same drug addicts, but thats life I guess.

Topic: General Discussion / help with CP-QAs

Karl, I beleive she is a DAFNE Graduate, but has yet to register as such. Some DAFNE centres are not very good at giving out the codes needed to sign-up as a graduate.
Grandma Carol, if you contact your DAFNE Educator they should be able to give you a code so we can make your account a graduate account, that will avoid the confusion with other users and will give you access to the online course handbook. As Karl points out I think you are a bit quick to change your ratio, your BG's for monday look fine on a 2:1 ratio and one day doesn't really make a pattern to work from. On the tuesday you are a bit high still at 16:30 and so you might find the insulin did not have the effect it normally does. Many people find it harder to get their BG back down below 12 with the 'standard' 1 unit = 3 BG, it can be you need more when your BG's are higher. Unfortunatley everyone is different so there is no 'standard' answer. You need to take readings over several days before changing your ratios to make sure it is your ratio at fault and not a blip in your BG's ( which we can all get from time to time).

Topic: Questions ? / wound healing

Helen, i would say your altered insulin requirement is almost certainly do to what you are going through. The stress both emotionally and physically is bound to be having an effect. Its good to hear you GP is supportive but it would be good to hear a Diabetes Consultants take on all of this. There are a lot of factors involved here and its an area where someone with a deep understanding of Diabetes and the effects of things like surgery etc could provide valuable input. They could also probably give you an idea how long the effects on your insulin requirements might last. Perhaps your DAFNE Educator can help with some information ?
I can only wish you well with your recovery and ask that you keep us posted on your progress.

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Iphone Apps

there is, if you want to spend £4.99 for something you will be able to get free in the near future (without the pictures of course) feel free too.
Personally I think £4.99 for an iphone app is more than a little excessive.
