Topic: General Discussion / Trying to lose weight? I'm like you Marke with a bag of peanuts...can't resist emptying the bag once started. They always have a drastic effect upon my BGs and I have seen BGs of 13+ after over-indulging. As a consequence, I try to avoid buying them.....Get thee behind me temptation![]() Regards Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / Dextro energy tablets Please talk directly to your local Pharmacist Lynda_2. Hopefully your discussion with them should ensure they seek secure supply.Forgive me. I'm cynical...when Tesco took them off the shelf I figured...no margin in Dextro then! My Pharmacy has them on the shelf at a price which, more often than not, beat Tesco. I was only buying them at Tesco out of convenience. Regards Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / Driving and blood glucose testing Warwick is right. Meters do go awry in high temperature too. I've had strips go AWOL in France before, when on holiday. The local Pharmacist there was very helpful though.Regards Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / Nuts!!! About 12 g CHO per 100 g.I have always had to take care with all nuts as I tend to take too big a portion...like a bag! ![]() So, my experience is a small portion ..say 50 g...weigh them out to see what that physically looks like...is well below what we would normally take QA for. Limit is usually 1 CP, so that is 82 g of Brazils. As you mention, make an adjustment if needed, at next meal time. Regards Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / Driving and blood glucose testing In current conditions watch out for low temperatures in the car. You may be inconvenienced by the fact that your meter has gone on strike as the battery is too cold.If possible, keep it on you...in a nice warm pocket. Regards Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / BI Hi John. Happy New Year.Perhaps your exercise is strenuous enough to increase your insulin resistance, contributing to the rise. We of course release Epinephrine, or adrenaline for 'Fight-or-Flight' and this makes us insulin resistant. You may wish to consider splitting the BI between morning and night too. Regards Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / Skiing The Optium meter only plays up when the battery gets cold. Try to keep in close to you and it should be fine. It will warm up when you stop in a nice warm restaurant for lunch! Enjoy yourself.Regards Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / qa ratio Take whatever ratio needed john m. But make changes as part of a controlled long-term evolution based upon your findings over the weeks and months to come.My lunch ratio is currently 2.5:1 and I report it as 2.5. On this basis, your ratios for Friday would be 2, 0.5 and 1. Your text implies that you are using 1.5:1 for lunch which would normally be reported as 1.5 but has been reported as 0.5-1. We need to get in as much information as possible entered correctly. The database you are creating, does lots of clever stuff in the background, which you will become familiar with. ![]() Regards Garry |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / LOW INSULIN INTAKE Keep up the exercise alanG. I love my bike rides 3 or 4 times a week. They have reduced my insulin needs significantly over the last months. Afraid I am a little more insulin resistant than you after 35 years and am jealous. My lowest ratio throughout the day is 2:1.Helps if you record your pre-driving BG every time. You need to avoid DVLC getting involved. Please record a BG before every meal or what do you base your QA and BI on? Very happy to see your results are so good. Reminder to myself....Keep up the exercise. Regards Garry |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Packaged food without total weight I sympathise. Some people find the necessary maths too difficult to do and make Carbohydrate intake errors as a result.I've complained in the past about alcoholic drinks which show an alcohol unit value but no CHO value. Now I see that there is a media supported push to get calorific values on drinks labelling.......but still no support for us. It really hacks me off. There are some 400,000 type 1s in the UK now. Surely we warrant some support. Regards Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / QA ratios on the weekend Upping your Background Insulin for the weekend is unlikely to help and you may find that it upsets your Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday results as most of us find BI changes are notoriously slow to show an impact.Far better to adjust your QA insulin ratios for the weekend. Regards Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / Cyborg Times (new BG meter) Thanks marke and Simon. I have been an Abbott fan for a number of years and will have a look at this new technology.I'm very disappointed by your feedback on Abbott support. Whenever I have had a problem with my current conventional Optium Xceed meters...their support, via helpful ladies on phone has been great. Sounds like a bit of a rushed out set up for this. Support would have to be first class for me to consider investing in the technology. I would not pay >£1300 pa without significant support. They need supply to pharmacists directly very quickly as I would not pay for delivery of sensors on an ongoing basis. Regards Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / metformin My consultant prescribed it for me some 3 years ago in an effort to reduce my insulin resistance. He told me to take anything between 500 to 3000 mg per day determined by experimentation. He told me that Metformin is probably the most widely used drug of its type with some 40 years of use by the NHS and only well known side effects. No problems for me with it...once my bowels! and body got used to it. Has generally reduced my QA ratios by 0.5 across the board resulting in an average TDD of QA down by 8u. Regards Garry |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / High BG after evening meals Welcome to the forum Rob0611![]() Try 1.5 and with knowledge and experience of several days of results 1,5 may suit you. As you are relatively insulin sensitive though, there is no reason that you can't use some in-between value for your ratio at this time of day..say 1.3. Experience will tell you. Regards Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / Burning Palm I wondered if that might be the case.Sorry to be a bit negative but I'm afraid that as long term type 1s we are prone to carpel tunnel syndrome and to developing nerve pinching of the finger nerves within the palms of our hands. This is caused by the thickening of the sheaths which carry the sinews and nerves to each finger. It is a quite common outcome of diabetes. You may find over time that it develops into a trigger finger for which you may need surgery. I have been type 1 for 35 years and over the years have had to have both carpel tunnels and three fingers fixed so far. Afraid I am now making an appointment to see my friendly upper limb surgeon again for another finger. Regards Garry |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Help with BG levels May I ask do you cycle and move your injection sites about? We all need discipline to spread the injections about in order to best control our insulin absorbtion rate. Please review your injection sites and avoid any that show bumps or tenderness. You can use your online diary to help you acheive the spread needed. Regards Garry |
