I also do occasional runs of about 3/4 km. I would spend a minimum of 80 minutes per session working out. I dont measure bloods before or after unless I would have the slightest doubts about my bloodsugar levels. I find its very important to take correct insulin at next scheduled time.As I found I was possibly taking an extra QA and going low during the nights after exersising. I have since almost totally corrected this by insuring the dose is as exact as is possible.
For anyone with a smart phone, I find the Android app really convenient and extremely helpful.I no longer use a paper diary, I record all my readings on the App, which also has Food Groups, Carb counter, summary etc. As I always have my phone with me, I now dont miss recording my readings.
You say you dont test prior to and after activity, did you used to? If so what were your readings?
Surely your BG levels are effected by your exercise.........?
I use both paper and app, the app for me cant spot patterns and display them to you, hence the paper........ I test before and after the gym. If the reading before is in double figures i do not take carbs, but if under 10 I eat half a biscuit. Whilst exercising, about half way through I have a satsuma as recommended on my dafne course. Sometimes none of this works and I am in hypo range when I return from the gym, sometimes my readings go upafter exercise instead of down. No real reason for it!

After doing the DAFNE course I was testing prior to gym workouts, but I found following any of the recommendations , my figures were all over the place. You say if your figures were under 10, u would eat a biscuit, unless my levels were near to 4, I wouldnt be taking anything .If they were above double figures I'd probably feel I should be taking a unit of QA , unless my previous dose was still working . I'm suprised that so many people seem or feel the need to take lots of readings, especially when quite a few of these readings are being taken when the QA acting is still working away.( I was told it start's working with in 10 minutes, and goes on for approx 3 hours) This would definately account for so many readings being in double figures.

I personally take readings after my lunch and dinner, this lets me know my dose, and timing is doing the job, that job being keeping the spikes to single figures and even under 8 if I can...............this is the only way to achieve good HbA1c results, by focusing on my readings between meals..........
I dont do it in the morning as I suffer from the dawn phenomenon and I am on a ratio of 3:1 then, so my BG will always be going down as opposed to up then down.....
All types of foods also effect people differently and therefore can cause significant spikes for some and small spikes for others. Testing at these times for me is crucial when trying to establish what food and mixtures of food need what timing of insulin to minimize spikes.......
You are meant to test before driving, however I admit to not doing so, but I always carry hypo resolve and my symptoms are still strong....
And finally, having lots of readings means that you will be able to obtain a more accurate average reading and therefore the, 7, 14, 30 and 90 day averages will be more realistic.........which wont make your HbA1c better, but lets you track your control better.........

well just back from my 6 month hospital check up, HbA1c was 6.8 ,which is similar to my own readings over past weeks months. Cholesterol 3.7, IDL 1.37, only suprise was BMI 28.1, which also suprised consultant,as he said your not carring any excess weight, but I dont think BMI calculations take account of muscle weighing more, which he also agreed with. In past month Ive had one blood sugar reading below 4 , and four above 8. Anyway, what works for me works just for me, DAFNE definately gives basic guidelines as to what we all should be doing, how you tailor them to your individual body and needs is amatter for each person.

Because you work so hard in the gym, you don't need to work hard with the diabetes, that's for sure........
you don't fancy sharing your readings via the online diary do you...........?

thebatoutofhull said: Barneybubbles; how do you adjust for the gym? What are your results like? I have a gym about 1/2 hour away but now the weather is brightening up I will spend a lot of time hopefully working outside. I'm a little apprehensive about changing my routine. Hi sorry for delay in replying. I adjust for the gym by taking carbs before gym(after reading)and usually have a piece of fruit mid session(like a satsuma)and 80% of the time my post gym reading is within limits. I live about 10 mins drive from the gym :
