I usually gym & swim about 3x/week, and tend to go straight after lunch. This is a regime I have been doing for about 4 years, and certainly started gymming before doing Dafne. I won't say I'm hooked, but feel great on the drive home [mission accomplished!] and sleep well too!
Despite cutting my QA to half for my lunch carbs, when I returned home post-gym/swim I was often testing at hypo level. Over the last few months I haven't been bothering taking any QA with lunch if I am going to the gym. My testing post-gym/swim have been slightly better, and just occasionally have been into double figures. But these tend to be more of a one off. I just want to minimise the times I'm testing in the hypo range, and my body not giving me the hypo signals. Confused
I suppose it all depends on how hard you exercise, and working out what works for your own body. We are all different!

Barneybubbles; how do you adjust for the gym? What are your results like? I have a gym about 1/2 hour away but now the weather is brightening up I will spend a lot of time hopefully working outside. I'm a little apprehensive about changing my routine.

Hi batoutofhull

I adjust by 1 or 2 units at lunchtime as i usually go to the gym about 1 1/2 hours after lunch. But it depends on the lunchtime reading. if in double figurs i will take insulin according to the amount of carbs in my lunch meal, if my reading is under 10 then i will adjust down one or two units of insulin Smile

Each person will differ/vary. I train 3/4 times weekly in gym, I engage in strenuous clases,as well as weight training, and spin classes lasting 40 minutes. I also do occasional runs of about 3/4 km. I would spend a minimum of 80 minutes per session working out. I dont measure bloods before or after unless I would have the slightest doubts about my bloodsugar levels.
I find its very important to take correct insulin at next scheduled time.As I found I was possibly taking an extra QA and going low during the nights after exersising. I have since almost totally corrected this by insuring the dose is as exact as is possible.

For anyone with a smart phone, I find the Android app really convenient and extremely helpful.I no longer use a paper diary, I record all my readings on the App, which also has Food Groups, Carb counter, summary etc. As I always have my phone with me, I now dont miss recording my readings.

You say you dont test prior to and after activity, did you used to? If so what were your readings?

Surely your BG levels are effected by your exercise.........?

I use both paper and app, the app for me cant spot patterns and display them to you, hence the paper........

As I said we all vary/differ,I've never measured prior to exercise unless I had doubts about my blood sugar levels. Similarly I wouldn't measure afterwards unless I felt there was need. I find it easier to spot trends on App rather than having to flick back through pages in diary. My fitness level certainly has big bearing on my bloodsugars,my average readings over past two months = 6.6.
I try to just take three readings daily,as well as recording my background insulin, but I generally don't record my blood sugars's when taking my
background insulin( unless I felt there was need or I had any doubts).
If I eat between meals/readings,I make would just take the required QA.

3 readings a day, wow, I take between 8-10, however I certainly dont need to take that amount at least as far as following the DAFNE principals are concerned.............i try and get my between meal readings down to single figures, otherwise there would be no chance of getting a lower HbA1c.....

6.6 is a good average, not very accurate with only 3 readings, but good none the less, what is your latest HbA1c?

My last HbA1c was 6.7 , my meal figures are normally in single figures, unless I have had a snack or its only been a couple of hours since I last took insulin. When I did the DAFNE course, I was struck by the different regimes we all seemed to have. I couldnt be taking readings 6,or 8 times daily as my normal routine, personally it suits me to take readings prior to main meals, breakfast, lunch, dinner. Then I take my background insulin at 9.30pm, I just record this, and generally wouldnt take my blood sugar levels unlessI felt the need. This regime suits me, its not to invasive and now with the App, not having to go looking for pen or a diary !
I have an appointment with my Consultant/Hospital in two weeks and will get my most recent HbA1c, cholesterol levels.

sjohno
I would normally go to gym, about 60/90 minutes after having had my lunch/food, I would have checked my blood sugars prior to the food. UnlessI felt a doubt about my levels , I wouldn't feel it necessary to test prior or after my gym workouts, or runs.I can generally feel /tell if my levels are off and would test,in such circumstances.

No I dont adjust my insulin level or measure them before exersise. If I had any doubts or was feeling the slightest bit off, I would check my levels, but generally I dont need or have to check them.
Generally i will have eaten at least 90 minutes prior to exersise or going to the gym,so I would have tested blood sugars then, but mainly for record purposes and to see how much QA insulin I required.
After doing the DAFNE course, I almost eighteen months ago, I did take small dose of insulin prior to exersise, but I found my figures were all over the place, and resulted in more lows. So i decided not to make any adjustments or take any readings just because of exersise. My HbA1c figures before and after DAFNE are very similar which suprised me, as I generally took less insulin prior to DAFNE. I find my weight is stable, because I do fair amount of weight training, I havent lost a lot of weight,(muscle being heavier) stabilised now at 80kg, but not carrying any loose flesh.

your HbA1c is good, well done.............it just shows you being active really does the job, and its probably down to this that makes your bg manageable..................i would imagine youe insulin doses are tiny, so less room for error etc........

what is your diet like?

do you find you need to inject long before meals?

It just shows how different our regimes are and what works for individual. My diet is varied and I eat what I want .I seldom take my insulin before my meals (just bad habit) Usually start getting meal ready ,calculate carbs I do weigh all my carbs when I'm at home, eat my food sometimes take QA just before I start eating but just as often afterwards .Before DAFNE I took 3x6 QA and 6 BI !
So post DAFNE I was taking more insulin because I was measuring my carbs value.I love whole meal breads pasta
