As a child (in early 90s, so hopefully better now?) I broke my arm, rushed to hospital as expected. With stress and cortisol etc... my BG was 17, first thing nurses and docs did was put me on a glucose drip! They couldn't get my BG down after that for ages! |

Topic: General Discussion / Feedback requested on DAFNE curriculum & workbook for Physical activity Hi,Do you have any new course material? I did DAFNE way back in 2011 and was a full time couch potato so any exercise advice would have washed over me, I am now a keen cyclist (4st lighter too) so things have changed. Phil |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / CP free lunch Dr Bernstein's why I am now low carb, avg BG about 5(ish), so much more stable too.I also find I don't much or any carbs for exercise which is a bonus. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / CP free lunch Yeah I'd agree with people above, I'm trying to be low carb, salad for lunch, meat and veg for dinner, I find Tomatoes spike BG and peas, sweetcorn. Before low carb I wouldn't count vegs or protein (they would be covered by QA for bread/potatoes etc...), but now that's all I eat I'm having to inject for it, not a lot admittedly. An old school carb free meal still needs a few units of QA, more if I have eggs. |

Topic: General Discussion / Freestyle Libre/ Australia Helen,In the UK its £50 + VAT (but we don't pay for that on medical items) for a single 14 day sensor. Current conversion is 1 to 1.90 so I'm guessing Abbot will round it off about $100? Let us know how much it is. If you guys get it considerably cheaper, might be worth the extra carriage. Phil |

Topic: General Discussion / BGs before exercise Alan, just my 2p, trial and error is needed as we're all different. For me it would depend on exercise intensity, if I knew I was doing an aerobic pootle / fat burner ride I wouldn't do much different with insulin unless it was going to be over an hour when I would lower QA, over 4 hours I would lower background and take sugar just in case (at lower intensity, very rarely needed). For intense anaerobic sessions I wouldn't lower QA as I find cortisol and liver/ muscle glycogen spike my BG so having that QA on board is good. This all works fine in theory until you go out and do a new route and find it has more hills than you expected or there is a massive headwind! On long rides for this reason I will take NovoRapid pen with me too as I feel lousy if BG spike is too much. Hope this helps a bit? Trial and error though? Regardless if I go out on my bike I have pockets full of energy gels just in case ![]() Phil |

Topic: General Discussion / Energy drinks during exercise (cycling) Yeah as James has said, to become fat adapted on the bike its been a long slow slog, training at 180-age which for me is 141bpm, very low, but its paid off.I do find if I'm on a group ride and the pace is too high for this HR I find I burn sugar and BG drops, I use High 5 gels for this, for no other reason than they're cheap, most places online are buy one get one free, I also find them more liquid than SiS and easier during a hypo to get out of sachet. |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Moods and blood sugars Like Alan suggested I would have a word with your Dr or Nurses as normally I would expect stress to raise blood sugar, stress is a fight or flight response from our caveman days running away from danger, the body (liver I think) kicks out glucose to give you a burst of energy to run away.I am guessing something else is going on, maybe your background as Alan said, definitely have a word with your Dr or team. |

Topic: General Discussion / Energy drinks during exercise (cycling) I do a lot of long distance cycling, in the early days I would have pockets full of glucose tablets and energy gels as I went hypo loads (exercise was probably a shock to the system), to counter this I then started lowering my background insulin along with my QA. This then lead to prolonged times of running at 12+, which made me feel lethargic on the bike.I have found a solution over the last 6 months, its not for everyone, but I have gone fully low carb, no bread, rice, pasta, sugar etc... I probably only have 20 to 30g of carbs from veg in a day unless I go hypo. In getting my body used to burning fat not carbs I still have gels in my pocket, but for the last few 100+ milers I've done them just on water. Like others have said, trial and error to find whats best for you I suppose, Low Carb isn't for everyone, but my HbA1c has gone from 7.9 to 5.9, which for me is worth the effort. Phil |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / freestyle libra I'm not an HCP, but I can answer that, No. Abbott are trying to get it, but don't hold your breath![]() That aside I do pay for it and find it really useful. EDIT: NHS need to way up the cost of long term issues, my HbA1c has gone from 8ish to 5.9 since using it. |

Topic: General Discussion / Cyborg Times (new BG meter) Anyone else found this?I hope this is just the current sensor, but its reading 3.8, I don't feel hypo so did BG test, 5.5, never had it this far out before. I would possibly scrap this sensor, but its a) got 7 days left (£25) b) my new ones haven't arrived yet. Just wondering, been using it for over a year now, is it a problem with the siting of the sensor, skin hardening or something? If it is this far out for the next 7 days I am going to complain to Abbott, bit worried as I like the Libre, naughty but I have come to rely on it over BG tests alot, if its not accurate I don't know that I can trust it any more. Topic: General Discussion / Cyborg Times (new BG meter) Simon,Hope you find it useful, it was quite sad when I first ordered how excited I was to get a BG meter! When you put a new sensor on for the maths to be able to average out a reading you can't get anything for 60 mins, this seems like a lifetime ![]() I have found that some sensors are more accurate than others, annoyingly the one I'm wearing now is about 2 mmol lower, so reckons I'm hypo when I'm 4 or 5. But other sensors have been spot on to 0.1 mmol. I suppose it also depends how accurate my Accu-Chek Mobile is as this was dif from OneTouch. Its the over night trends that has helped my HbA1c (was going hypo and liver kicking out sugar so spiking), since getting Libre HbA1c gone from 7.9 ish to 6.6 (sorry, still work in old money) and gone low carb now so hoping for sub 6 next time. Hope you get it before Xmas, nice pressie, all the party food will be good fun watching the graph bounce around ![]() Phil |

Topic: General Discussion / Cyborg Times (new BG meter)
Simon, you will love having trend info, I have found it not to be 100% accurate, often about 1 mmol lower than blood, but like you said this makes no dif to me, its the is going up or down, should I eat or inject type info. I have in the past had supply issues and been a few weeks without sensors, felt lost without it now. It must be saving the NHS a fortune as I only test about 3 times a day now instead of 10+ |

Topic: General Discussion / Strange Basal Insulin Question Hi,I have been trying low carb for the last 6 months, I have been having 8 units Levemir morning and night, with a trickle of Novorapid for the protein and carbs in fruit/veg. I have noticed over the last month or so that I have needed to increase my basal insulin to 12/12 from 8/8 with no significant change in exercise (only dif is I no longer go outside on the bike, but use trainer indoors as weather is naff) or eating habits. I am wondering if this is a hormonal thing, my body doing something expecting winter or something? Has anyone else noticed a need to increase basal in winter? Or is my insulin sensitivity going down? I still drop like a brick from too much Novorapid so I don't think so, unless its Levemir I am no longer sensitive to? Any ideas? Increasing basal is not an issue, just got me wondering. Phil |

Topic: General Discussion / Cyborg Times (new BG meter) Frazer,Your issue might be mine and others fault, my first few sensors kept dropping off during or after vigorous exercise due to sweat, recently this is less likely. I think they have changed the glue or at least its strength, this might now be your issue. Have a word with Abbott. Not sure knowing this will help though. Phil |

Topic: General Discussion / Low Carb Yet another low carb question, I haven't lost my hypo signals (yet), I know when I'm running low, don't get them until about 3.5 now, if I'm exercising I need to eat, nothing I can about it (just can't keep going), but often since low carbing if I give it a bit of time before eating my body kicks in and I go up or I will have some nuts or cheese rather than sugar. Is it wise to leave it like this (I eat if I'm driving or something, but at my desk I'll have a few nuts)? If I do have sugar I'm on an up / down rollercoaster for most of the day then! I feel so much better running lower like this, but now I have the concern of loosing my hypo signals, they are already not happening til I'm lower! Is there an easy answer? Can't win, its a battle everyday! |

Topic: General Discussion / Low Carb Hi all,I think I am finally about there, 100+ miles on the bike yesterday, scrambled eggs in butter before hand, pub lunch, Sausage in onion gravy, with chips (I had about 5 or 6 to mop up gravy). Pockets full of gels, but didn't need one. HbA1c down from 12 (old skool) 2 years ago to 6.8 ![]() Still too nervous to go out for any distance without a pocket full of gels though, what do other low carbers have if they do go hypo? Are there any other low carbers that are exercise nuts like me? Phil |

Topic: General Discussion / Cyborg Times (new BG meter) Anyone else having issues with Abbot not being able to produce/deliver sensors.I think they are a victim of their own success, I don't think they can keep up with demand. Who would have thought a cheap alternative CGM for T1 diabetics would be popular? I am out of sensors, keen cyclist and feel lost without it on rides now! |

Topic: General Discussion / Night time Hypo - Depression! novorapidboi26,From the freestyle website: Sensor water resistance IP27: Can withstand immersion into one metre (3 ft) of water for up to 30 minutes https://www.freestylelibre.co.uk/freestyle-libre-sensor-kit-en-gb-es.html I've had baths/showers with it on, but not been swimming yet, holiday next week will be a good test ![]() I honestly think they should be on NHS, I forgot to order new one quick enough and feel lost without it at the moment, HbA1c gone from 7.9 to 6.7, purely due to seeing that I was running high overnight. I also feel happier running lower as I know the trend, if I test and am 4, I don't know if I'm going up or down based on this, but with Libre I get an arrow to tell me. Hope this helps. Phil |

Topic: General Discussion / Low Carb Warwick,I went for a 10+ hour bike ride last weekend on no carbs, had spinach and cheese omelette for breakfast, cooked in butter for fat content. After 2 to 3 hours this didn't sit very well, felt sooo sick. I have since read that eggs on a low carb diet are not the best idea before alot of exercise, what do you eat prior to ironman training? I have also found going low carb this week that for some strange reason my BGs have risen and I seem to be injecting quite alot of QA for nuts and salad, is this just me needing some QA anyway, is this normally included in my carb QA? Did you notice anything similar? Phil |
