Topic: General Discussion / medical leave during DAFNE course I swear under the Disability Discrimination Act, their is a clause where If a diabetic who is on Insulin medication must attend a course about insulin management, the company must pay for it, I remember reading this before I went on my DAFNE course, I would suggest ringing maybe Diabetes UK and see if they can help you, I dont think this will come out of your holiday, and you should get paid for it, (maybe at a lower rate) but you should BY LAW get paid for it,Check out the Disability discrimination Act, for Diabetes, Im preety sure im right tho.. [Edit]: Im 50% sure im right... |

Topic: General Discussion / Woops looks to me that maybe your underestimating you CP's or your insulin ratio isnt right, Log you details and food for a few days, (eat packet food so you know the carb content),I suspect you need more insulin, perhaps a change to your ratio. I found that taking Omega 3 Supplements (inc EPA & DHA), can in some people reduce insulin resistance and cause the insulin to work better in your body, This is because the omega 3 first, thins your blood, so the insulin can have more of a affect for the same amount of insulin taken, Its also a great supplement to take because we all have very LOW amounts of Omega 3 in our diet (Unless you eat oily fish alot). You can buy omega 3 supplements, 3 months supply for like £3-£4. Also, the problem COULD be you Background Insulin, we need good details for a few days, of what you ate, when and how much, and how much insulin you took. If you have a few days of this, maybe we could spot a pattern to help you control your BG better. Hope this helps! Thanks |

Topic: Site Development / DAFNE Online iPhone application - help with content/design needed Hi,To overcome this hurdle, couldnt you have a feature where a user can enter all the information themselves. So I can enter the food, portion size and carb count. This would overcome this problem and be a excellent feature to have, you could build your own diary with other foods as well. Definitely would be the best way to go. |

Topic: General Discussion / Calling all budding artists! Hi Simon,I can edit the size as you wish, but any ideas of the dimension you want it to be? (In pixels). If you give us approx dimensions of how big you want it, I will scale them down accordingly. also, I will have to check this, but i suspect the Logo will not contrast well with the navigation bar at the top, is the navigation bar background a repeated image? Looking at the source code I cant tell, but maybe I could create a repeat image to place in the background of the navigation bar to contrast better with the Logo. I'll also include a Favi-icon (For bookmarking) and anything else you need, just let us know. A little busy at the moment, but i'll work on this ASAP, hopefully within the next few days. Thanks |

Topic: General Discussion / Calling all budding artists! HeyI just put the little man and the heart to kind of promote "Healthiness" if you will, The space above the DAFNE and to the Right of the Teardrop was a bit to empty I thought, I could remove it, but it looked a little to empty, So just put it there to promote "Healthiness" and "Well Being". And to put another colour into it, as oppose to being ALL orange. I'll work on it a bit more tomorrow if i get a chance, I'll see what else I can come up with. Thanks! |

Topic: General Discussion / Calling all budding artists! Personally... I like logos 2, 6, & 8.I wanted to include the message of "Freedom" to eat what you want, but didn't know exactly where to put it or how to fit it in. How about for Logo 4... "Freedom to Eat what you like"..? Any idea's, comments or suggestion's will be appreciated!! --EDIT-- Here's some ideas for a iPhone App Icon I whipped up, just a rough idea: iPhone Logo's ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (P.S: I'll work on the resolution quality, to make sure its optimized for the iPhone) -- Another Edit -- Added a "Web 2.0 look" (Glossy) ![]() Getting Tired! (For my reference only) - Include a Pattern within the logo to make it more friendly on the eye - Perhaps include a pattern for iPhone? (Test) - Include a pattern in the DAFNE text for the Logo. - Change the Orange colour to a slightly darker colour to keep in line with DAFNE Online. (#ee8043) / Web Colour (#ff9933) - Add "Online" to the logo to change to "DAFNE Online" - Make a new favicon for the site. - await for responses and suggestions!! Thanks! Anil! ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Hi!..... Im New Hi!,Tips for AFTER DAFNE 1. Practice It DAILY until it becomes a habit, It may seem daunting, but Its very easy, and will help for the REST OF YOUR LIFE, it is a SKILL FOR LIFE, and like all skills, Practice = Perfection. 2. Review your progress weekly when your free, (Sitting in front of the TV or something, bring your DAFNE BG book out and see what happened and when, Did you go out?, Did you do exercise? etc) 3. If you have any questions or problems.... Post them on this Forum! The best people to ask are US, We all have gained experience through practice. If your ever worried about something... JUST ASK!! 4. EXERCISE!!!... I know this isn't a "Tip", But its really important for us to exercise regularly, This will help with blood circulation (which improves nerve growth & repair, and reduce nerve damage) and generally help to prevent any long term complications. 5. Treat yourself every now and again for excellent BG control, This helps reinforce what you've learned and practiced and will also motivate you (Sub-conciously even) to make it into a habit. 6. Practice by eating different types of meals, Eating out and such. Remember you should be able to recall this from the top of your head (When out in restaurants and stuff). 7. And last one... Practice, Practice, PRACTICE!!... <--- This is very important, (I know I said it already!, But its THAT important) don't under-estimate it, take the time to know what your doing and review it every so often (Make changes were necessary) Anyone else, feel free to share your own! ![]() |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Am i counting carbs right Pasta is almost all carbs, so that could be right, When I have a standard plate of pasta I'm taking over 10 easy on 1:1.I would have never done this before DAFNE, but its working great now!!... I also never used to take any units for milk in the past, but after DAFNE always 1 unit per 200ml of milk, (Which I have with almost every meal) After a large meal (Whatever it is generally)... I take between 10-20 units depending what I eat. All my ratios are currently 1:1, so 1.5:1 could take you over 20 with a large meal. Garlic bread is very carb intensive (Bread) so that could be right. Best thing is to take the insulin, see how you feel after 2 hours or so, if you feel "low" or like your having a Hypo, then you probably took to much, Write it down in your diary and keep it in mind next time you eat, Its all about trial and error! Were all different! |

Topic: General Discussion / stress Hi, Melissa,I know its a bit late, but just in case anyone else has had issue's like this. Yes, Stress is primarily down to excess cortisol production in the body, this can happen at times of emotional (and sometimes physical) stress. Cortisol is also known as the "Stress" hormone in the body. Cortisol counteracts the affect of insulin, so you may find you need more insulin to bring your sugars down more then normal for a short time (While your stressed). I have also had previous experience of this, I have suffered from work related stress and found it does increase your BG levels (Because insulin doesn't work as well, and you need more of it) After a few nights of sleep, you'll find you feel a bit better, stress affects all of us all the time, but when we go to sleep, our brain does amazing things to help filter out negative thoughts and emotions and keep us "Sane". You may find that when under stress after a good nights sleep, you tend to look at it in a different light, (Maybe it isn't so bad after all?) thus alleviating the symptoms, stress & excess cortisol in the body associated with it. I hope you resolve your issue's soon, and if you still find yourself with high BG levels, consider (Temporarily) adjusting your Ratio's until their back to normal and you feel better! Although it may not seem like it, Exercise is a great way to relive stress. (Exercise release endorphins into your body creating a "Slight Natural High", This is a great way to alleviate stress and feel good about your future and outlook). Hope this helps!... and.. Keep smiling ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Anyone else having problems obtaining BG Test strips from their GP? Hi guys,I spoke to my DAFNE instructors today, and were really helpful, they said they would look into it and speak to my GP about increasing my Test Strips. Hopefully this will help, otherwise they informed me to file a official complaint, I was trying to avoid this, but it may be the only way to move forward. Anyway, If anyone else is having this problem, see if you DAFNE instructors can help, otherwise file a official complaint, (Ask your GP for the necessary forms and/or telephone number(s)) By the looks of it, this is only a problem with MY GP, due to the fact nobody else has had any problems like this across the country. Thanks for the Fantastic Response!! (Everyone!) |

Topic: General Discussion / chocoholic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Although theirs some truth in that, We still have to watch our diet, eating chocolate each and every day will affect us more then a normal person, especially with the long term complications side.Indulging in a few chocolates now and again (even often is fine) but dont go overboard. Yes, DAFNE is all about normal eating, but we still have to make changes to our diet, We dont go around drinking normal coke do we? and other normal drinks to? Make sure you take the correct insulin, but sugar (even in a normal person) will deteriorate our eyes over the long term, so its not good to over do it, and especially because were diabetic, we need to be even more vigilant with our control. Eating chocolate is fine, but dont over do it, (Its not good even for a normal person, Its even worse for us), Match the insulin. AND DO SOME EXERCISE once a week. <--- Very important to increase your bodies blood circulation and keep nerves & vessels in your body and eyes healthy. |

Topic: General Discussion / chocoholic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Im sure we all like chocolate!! Just check the carbohydrate count, and make sure you take the right amount of insulin.... and dont go overboard, Even for non-diabetics, too much chocolate can have a negative impact on the body, not to also mention getting fat!,I love my chocolates, and eat some every other day, but i try to balance it with a healthy diet and exercise. I'd do a 30 minute run and burn off 300 calories.. and then say to my self, "Now I deserve to stuff my face with chocolate!"... lol!... everything in moderation, but the occasional "choco-fest" isn't bad I guess, as long as you MATCH THE INSULIN, and get it right. |

Topic: General Discussion / Anyone else having problems obtaining BG Test strips from their GP? Yes, Hopefully I think ill get their in the end, Im seeing my DAFNE instructors next week, so hopefully they can also speak to my GP (again) and sort it.Just kind of worried about others in the same situation, because when you think about it, this is kind of a "easy" way for the NHS to save abit of money, I mean you hear about it on the news all the time, "NHS budget deficit", "NHS making cut backs" and stuff, Just hope it doesn't go on like this for all our sakes, |

Topic: General Discussion / How good is dafne I believe that all Type 1 Diabetics should BY LAW be forced to do DAFNE, They do this in germany, If your diagnosed with Type 1, You spend 2 weeks in hospital learning DAFNE, Its the LAW in Germany.I think they should do this here, Maybe not in hospital, But force employers to give PAID time off for people to do this, High BG can show in your work (low concentration, forgetfulness and generally being "Tired" all the time), so It can help employers AND the government to save money in the long term by not having to treat common complications of diabetes which costs alot more then doing this DAFNE course. It really helped me, Despite what you know, Im sure EVERYONE will learn something new. For me, It was the Alcohol Related stuff and the Sick day stuff was very useful, (Im always ill, I have a very poor immune system I think, and catch colds and the flu easily). Also, (if im honest) the Drug related stuff as well, I've smoked marijuana occasionally with friends and stuff in the past, and noticed it didnt have a affect on my BG (positive or negative affect) but it was nice to have it confirmed, Again, everything in MODERATION, I exercise 7 times a week, one day Cardio-Vascular and one day Muscular and alternate this. (So I dont need any lectures if your planning on giving them!) Also, the little CP Handbook they gave was very useful plus looadds of other stuff, like the ability to ask questions that trained people know the answers to and the helping out with prescriptions and stuff, REALLY ACE! Highly recommend, and IF you know ANYONE who is a Type 1 Diabetic, Recommend them to this course, I even told my GP the same thing "Anyone who's Type 1, MUST... I repeat MUST go on this course, WITHOUT FAIL", Its really important for their health and general well being. Tips for AFTER DAFNE Anyone else, feel free to share your own! ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Anyone else having problems obtaining BG Test strips from their GP? OMG, people are having to MOVE just to get WHAT THEY NEED,Surely this is a infringement of our Human Rights in the UK or another law, how can they get away with this?, I'm going to speak to my GP once more, and ask to amend my prescription or to write a letter detailing exactly why they cant issue me more tests. Then at least in the future when I do suffer from complications (which i probably will at this rate :S... oohh more stress, just what I needed) I can file a law suit against the practice and NHS. Im going to have to do something about this. This is just NOT ON. |

Topic: General Discussion / Anyone else having problems obtaining BG Test strips from their GP? 200 a month!! OMG! I wanted to move to the accu check mobile but apparently their "To expensive", even thought I suspect their the same price, plus their not even on my GP's Prescription list.200 a month! Im struggling to get 50 a month, I have to fight, shout and stomp my feet to get 50 a month (That's less then 2 tests a day, 25 days @ 2 tests a day)! I've been diabetic and going to the same GP for over 10 years now, (Maybe 13 years since diagnosed Type 1 Diabetic), never had a problem in the past, but I probably wasn't testing as much as I should have, and thats why i've had high HBA1C results for the last 2 years, (Which is why I went on DAFNE) I don't think people should be allowed as many as they want, BUT THEY SHOULD GET WHAT THEY NEED , I mean I would like to do 3-4 tests a day (I wouldn't do 4 tests each and every day if i could help it, But I think I should be allowed AT LEAST 3).But right now I have to think, "Well i've done 2 already today, Morning and lunch so we'll call that it), Then I wake up the next morning with a SUPER high BG over 10, sometimes over 14-15 IN THE MORNING, AAARRGGHHH!! :@ Im so frustrated, I've been so stressed with my job these last 2 years, and now I got this hanging over my head as well. I just dont know what to do... God, I wish I could do 3 tests a day, but really have to limit my self, Every time I go to the GP, I get told the same thing, "You shouldnt be doing so many test" or "We just gave you a box of 50 2 weeks ago" or some other rubbish, I think I may have to switch GP's, I think this is a problem with my GP looking at everyone else's response. Anyone else have a view on this? Do you get enough test strips or are you in my position and have to "shout, scream and stomp your feet" like I do just to get 2 boxes a month. |
