Hi,

I am currently doing the DAFNE course at Southern General, I got 2 days paid and had to take 3 from annaul leave / flexi leave entitlement

I am a nurse and I worked Friday, Saturday, Sunday nightshifts so that I could attend the course during the week. It was exhausting but because the roster had been done by the time I knew I was attending the course, all I could do was change my shifts to this.

Hi there, been a graduate myself for over a year. In answer to your question, my employer has over 4000 employees and at first I was asked to take sick leave. When discussed further I found that I was actually entitled to attend the course under the DDA (Disability Act). Therefore did not cost me annual leave or my very good sickness record. Diabetics are covered under the disability act.

Hi , i did a DAFNE course in June , i was told i would have to take it as paid sick but it would not be added to my sickness total for the year . When i first started at my place of employment i was told that due to the DDA ( as in post above ) Employers have to be seen to be making Reasonable adjustments . And there is a current advert on the telly at mo that states this too .

[Hi - this is my first posting! I did my course last November 2011, I also work at a school as an LSA, and I had time off as sick leave (paid - which isn't that much) quote=PPS North Stand]Hello
This is my first posting after graduating from DAFNE during the February half-term........there you go February half-term!!!......... working in a school, there is very little likelihood of schools releasing teachers for a DAFNE course as they have to pay for cover (£180 - £200 per day). Hence I and other school based employees HAVE to do it in holiday time.

Hi i had to take 2 days paid leave, 2 days holiday and 1 day as my day off,
my employer is a massive chain , i had to practically beg to get that time off , think its stupid tbh .

i have to re arrange my shifts for appointments which is wrong, i ask for time off for them but they say they dont have to! think i need to find the hand book.

I definitely believe that your employer is in the wrong.........I would investigate further...... Wink

Perhaps it's something thaey should make clear on the course! what are our actual entitlements as part of the information, I think they touch on it but I can't remember now.

I finished my course today. It's been an absolute nightmare getting time off with pay, even though copies of the explanation letter from the DAFNE educators were sent to my manager AND the HR department 15 months ago and again a few weeks ago. My employer has a policy that would have enabled time off with pay, but allows discretion to the manager who dislikes others, such as the diabetes health professionals in this instance, suggesting something that affects her control over the team. Through this issue, it has become apparent what a control freak she is. The matter is not resolved yet. Evil or Very Mad Wink In the end, because I began to make my disappointment known to others, she said I could go "and I'll decide the type of absence it is when you get back!". Thankfully the course educators and course participants have restored my faith in human nature this week! Wink
