Hi Derek, You talk about wanting to lose weight as well as get your HBA1c down but it being difficult to manage both at the same time. I managed to lose 2 stones (it took me a year, but slow and steady is the way). In that time all my insulin needs and HBA1c came down. I was still eating carbs but trying to use complex carbs and was also still eating lots and could snack when I wanted. It could also help with the night time snacking as you'd be able to but would get more ideas on the best things to have. I'm not sure if I should be singing the praises of a specific group on here but it was 'Slimming world' and I'd recommend you might want to think about something like that. The support of a group might help too (men do go!) Good luck with your BS, you seem to be getting there! Michelle

Hi Michellem
I have thought about joining a slimming class because you just don't know how much to eat. I joined Tesco diets last year for a short spell and discovered I wasn't eating enough to keep the metabolism ticking over, lost some weight but it was hard to follow as there far too many different foods to eat. I can eat the same thing every day and don't need variety.
I think it is an age thing also as I used to lose weight easy but now it seems impossible lol.
Novorapidboi, there are a lot of articles online about insulin, carbs and weight gain. When bodybuilders want to bulk they use carbs to do that. There used to be some who actually took insulin to put on weight, don't know if they still do.
I don't know if you are able to post links o here but here are a couple of sites to check out
http://www.second-opinions.co.uk/index.html a site by Barry Groves PHD from the Cotswold, with lots of info about diet and carbs etc
http://www.garytaubes.com/ a site by an American science writer who has written books on carbs and weight gain.
Worth a look, probably get banned for posting information that goes against the current dietary guidelines.
When first diagnosed I was told you must eat carbs and so I done that, the more carbs = more insulin and over the years the weight crept up and despite always eating low fat the GP always assumed I was consuming too much fat, but my vice was sweet stuff, ice cream, cadburys twin pots and despite no longer eating these things I am finding it hard to lose weight. I've actually gained 4 lbs since doing dafne because of eating more carbs and a large increase in insulin. Used to take 6-8i units at meals but now can take up to 26 units, which I have never taken.
If anyone likes sweet stuff you can buy calorie and carb free syrups online and a calorie free sweetener which tastes exactly like sugar called ZSweet, it is expensive though.
Best regards
Derek

I am not aware of any rules regarding links and currently the forum is not moderated, but I am sure links regarding insulin and carbs are perfectly suited to this site............thanks I will take a look.....
I think the beauty of DAFNE is that you dont need to use sweeteners, you just inject for what your eating.....simples....

The first link didn't really go into much about type 1, although there was a diet plan he thought could eliminate the need for insulin if caught early enough, to me that is a fairytale.............
I can understand the theories on low carb, high fat diets in the way he described it, however the myth that diabetics, especially type 2 patients should eat lots of carbs is long gone I believe.....
Low carb and most importantly slowly absorbed carbs are best........definitely food for thought in the weight loss context though, i will need to investigate further.........
