I just wrote a whole umpynine word post here about morning highs and this darn site deleted it while I was posting. grrrrr don't you hate that? lol

The gist of it was that I can't seem to get my morning levels down, tried increasing bi, tried low/no carb suppers, tried 3am testing... if it's normal then....then what? dawn phenomenon - is it that? If so is it always gonna happen??

can't write anymore...it'll probably not post it anyway Sad grrr

Hi Susieq
I have the same problem.
The only way that seems to work for me is to make sure that my meals are at least six hours apart and that if I have a less active day I only have two meals. Do not eat a lot of complex carbs after lunch and keep your portion sizes down.
Hope this helps,
Moris.

No, it's OK all throughout the day... really good, but it's just the waking numbers, I've increased my bi by 2u, and for 3 days now it's still been 10.7 ! Question

Hi,

I am on a bit of a fitness/diet at the moment and used to get this problem, I now have next to no carbs after lunch so my bedtime BG is around 4 or 5 (often need a few carbs to keep me up). Going to bed with this lower BG and no pasta/pizza floating around seems to have done the trick, I am now having to lower my background as I am low in the morning. In the 25 years of Type 1 I have never had low morning BG until now.

I know this isn't a life long fix as I am going to want to eat in the evening again at some point, but it proves its the carbs over night that are causing my issue and probably yours.

If you find a solution without starving yourself let me know Very Happy

susieq - is your pre-bed BG in range?

With low carbs and increased exercise often a bit low now, not too bad about 4.5 to 5.5, used to be a bit on the high side 8 to 10 when dinner was carb loaded. For me I'm not sure its the bedtime BG as in the old days I often went to bed with BG 6 or 7 and woke with 14+. I think for me its the no carbs in the system floating around overnight.

Yes usually they're around 6 or 7 before bed. that's what's so frustrating. I have tea about 5 - 6pm then that's it, last night an omelette with bacon and salad. then it rose to 10.5 overnight. That's with an increase of basal by 2u.

The thing is...... DAFNE was meant to assist with NORMAL eating, am I right, not low/no carbs?? shame that. I was expecting too much then, I still have to eliminate all the carbs before I can get to normal readings.

Hi,

Whats your 3am test like, has it risen by then? When I was getting 10+ in the mornings my Consultant said if it was DP there were 3 options...

1. wake about 4/5am and test/inject (he said he had one person do this, very keen)
2. if morning BG was at most 12 then live with it and correct at breakfast (even with higher morning BG my HBA1c was around 7.5)
3. consider pump to get the increased insulin needed gradually.

I went with option 2 Very Happy

What do your Diabetic people think? Was this an issue before DAFNE? I don't know what your BGs are like, but when I'm not dieting 10.7 is actually a reasonable level for me. Are you beating yourself up too much? How are these higher morning BG effecting your HBA1c? Relax and go with option 2 Very Happy

Many of us find that BI changes can take some days to kick in with an effect.
It may be the same for you, particularly if on Lantus BI.
For me, BI changes take 3 days to show signs of any possible improvement.

I think Confused I eat a NORMAL diet, which when I look at my diary, averages 23 CPs a day.
We always have lots of unmeasured stuff going on in our blood which is difficult to manage the outcome of.
Take a few days to make any further changes - so you are sure of cause and effect.
