Thoughts of biking with a pump?

Just a thought on this, my consultant keeps trying to sell me on the idea of a pump and so far I've pretty much dodged it due to concerns over my biking. The whole working of the things and level wise sound great. But, what get's me is the size of the things, and wondering if anyone out there is a heavy biker (both road and mountain/downhill) and has experience of these contraptions strapped to you, and how they handle the usual knocks and bashes and how easily fitted with armour and such?
