I am just wondering if anyone has experienced side effects from using a particular type of insulin and what your experiences were? I remember a guy on my DAFNE course saying he had to come off Lantus because he felt like it was poisoning him.

I've been on Lantus for a year and I think that it's the cause of my dental problems because I've had so many problems since being on Lantus it's ridiculous. I have contacted my specialist about it and I'm waiting for feedback.

My diabetes support group met last weekend. One of the women members (I'll call her Katie) has been in near constant pain for the last four years. Another member of the group had previously mentioned issues with pain and Lantus several months back, and Katie realised that her pain had started only a month after switching to Lantus from a different basal insulin.

In June Katie switched from both Lantus and her synthetic QA, to beef insulin, and over the last couple of months, the pain has receded so that it is about 15% of what it was, and it continues to improve. Katie said that she had found a lot of information online about bad side effects when using Lantus.

If you are concerned that you are being affected, then I'd suggest talking to your endo about it, and perhaps trialling another basal insulin such as Humalin or Levemir, or possibly beef or pork insulin if they are appropriate for you.

Hi I was put on lantus a few years ago and straight away I felt ill and I started to put weight on, I put on 10lbs in two weeks. The hospital and dieticans asked me if I was sure I hadn't changed my diet or exercising less etc. I took myself off the lantus on a Friday and on the Saturday I was feeling back to normal and the weight came off over a few weeks. The drs at hospital wouldn't say it was the lantus but to me it must have been, too much of a coincidence to feel pretty ill and put a lot of weight on in such a short space of time and then for it all to reverse once I went back to humulin I. I looked it up on the Internet and at that time I found things from America were people had reacted badly to lantus and from memory I think there were lots of different issues that people had.
