Diabetes UK: WALK FOR DIABETES at Walsall Arboretum on 9th June 13

Last September time I was suddenly diagnosed with type1 diabetes after a long time of symptoms going blurred vision, headaches, tried all the time, dehydrated and my GP wrongly diagnosed me which is potentially life-threatening, I was upset at the fact that the symptoms where extremely easy to associate with diabetes but where never tested for it, until I became so ill with DKA (Diabetic ketoacidosis) and was hospitalised.

I found it hard to come to terms with this illness which led me to become so more ill with depression which I came close to giving up, My glucose levels was on the raise and getting worse my depression was making me bed bound, aside all that I still came to work fighting through the long hours and feeling like “I think you get the picture”. I needed help!

I went to my new GP and my blood tests came back and they were worse than when I was first diagnosed, we didn’t understand what was happening to me. I heard my GP on the telephone to my hospital doctor explaining my results that have come back and the only thing I could make from listening up the door was “Renal Failure” “I thought oh my god, that’s it my body is falling apart” my pancreas and now my Kidneys, I already have a 12 cholesterol and a slow acting thyroid. I thought come on give me a break!(in a humorous manner) My GP advised me that all these medical problems was just from my Diabetes, from my blood glucose levels been continuously high, she recommended that I attended a DAFNE course.

In April this year I attended the 5 day course which changed my life completely I am now in target of my glucose levels have reduced my slow acting insulin and living a more active and free lifestyle and not feeling so low or tried.

I know what I went through and I know other people out there feel the same and it’s time to change. Diabetes in the long run is known to cause problems but you can change this by looking after yourself NOW.
I am trying to raise £200 for research for Diabetes UK and also promoting DAFNE (Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating) course for people in the backcountry to attend, There GP has to pay for the course so that’s why people don’t know about DAFNE. My aim is to promote DAFNE at events all over the place because I believe it shouldn’t have to be a postcode lottery it should be available to everyone.

DAFNE have an e-petition to the UK government, Studies have shown that structured education has improved the quality of life for those people who have taken courses by empowering them to manage their condition with greater confidence. In the long run improved control should hopefully save the NHS money by reducing the long term complications associated with having diabetes. Please support this petition so that a nationally funded structured education programme can be established that ensures that the highest standards of education apply nationwide." ALSO don’t forget to please Donate and let’s get more research into Diabetes so it can change of lives. Thank you http://www.justgiving.com/Leighton-Webb
