Original article from the diabetes.co.uk website:
Diabulemia becoming a growing problem

"An increasing number of women with diabetes are putting their health at risk by avoiding vital insulin treatment in order to lose weight."

What is your opinion on this topic/article?

My heart goes out to those that are desperate enough to take that route. Sad This is a great example of why an educational course like DAFNE is needed because we know as graduates that the way forward is exercise and dose reduction to compensate for the changes that occur from exercising in order to assist with weight loss - not starving your body of insulin, running the risk of hospitalising yourself just to lose a few pounds.

As I've grown up, I have thought about this option for keeping my weight stable but (like the majority I hope) I chose to acknowledge the risks and avoid actively choosing to do it because I want to take care of myself and live as long as I can.

Saying that, I have never ever been over weight (yet) and I've never ever been on a diet (nor do I ever plan to) so I've not ever really experienced the extremes that others sometimes face. If I ever worry about my weight, I tend to just become a bit more select about what I eat for a while to make sure it doesn't get out of hand.

A lot goes unsaid for the positives of moderation too...

Thoughts? Smile

I don't understand it personally, but I suppose there are girls out there very self conscious about there bodies.........

education i suppose is a good way forward......being told that hey WILL suffer, not maybe suffer if they continue would be real, maybe not ethical......

Great shame that young women feel the need to do this, however, it is a reflection in the perfection driven world which many younsters feel they have to conform with in order to be accepted and appreciated.

I am trying to loose weight but would never ever try this. I am going on a DAFNE course in august or sooner if possible so will this aid weight loss as i'll be better controlled? I tend to yo-yo between very low and very high bs

There is no definite answers to this I'm afraid. I know people who lost a lot of weight, people who lost no weight and people who put on weight. People often put on weight just after the course because their insulin is more effective by virtual of the fact its more accurate to what your body needs were before the course there was too much or too little. However once you get past that you then have the flexibility to eat less and exercise more with the tools to manage these things so in theory losing weight is easier. I say in theory because losing weight never seems that easy Very Happy
