Do you inject

1. Before a meal (i know this should be done 15 mins before or immediately before)?
2. At what BS level would you inject before...?
or
3. After a meal?

It was suggested on the course to do the injection after the meal as you may not eat as much as what is prepared so then you run a risk of a Hypo.
I generally inject after the meal and sometimes I leave it too long like tonight. Must do the injection now (30 minutes after meal)

I dont use Humalog, but I believe it is a quick acting analog, just like Novorapid or Apidra................

So.........

1. I do inject before a meal, anything from 15-45 minutes, this allows the insulin to get underway in preparation for the meal, I worked out my timings for each meal by testing on a hourly basis between meals to establish what timing gave me the smallest spike [below 9mmol/l]

2. As long as I was not hypo, I would inject my dose at any BG level, before my meal...

3. I would inject after my meal if I was eating a high fat meal were I assume the absorption of glucose may be delayed and so delaying the insulin peak is required also..............[split dose]

Having had the opportunity to try CGMS (constant glucose monitoring system) the one thing that came through very clearly was the benefit of injecting beforehand. In my case 15-30 minutes before works best, but as with all these things its has to be a case of trial and error for yourself. As novorapidboi says, I will inject regardless of BG level, provided I am not hypo.
