Hi everyone,
I am in a pickle, I go to zumba for an hour a week, however it seems to raise my ng, before I went it was 6.1 after 17.7? Am I meant to have some qa before I go? I can't remember.
Thanks

You should check that the previous meals dose is correct on the days your not attending the class, if its not then this may be the problem........

Also, only act upon it if it happens more than once...........

Have a look at the DAFNE handbook in the exercise section, that tells you what tactics to take depending on duration and intensity of the activity, and whether or not your looking to lose weight......

The reading could also be a false high and you are experiencing a Hypo.
I used to do a gym class and the Diabetic clinic used to suggest eating something prior to the class (a could of Rich Tea biscuits)
Do you test before the class?

Despite the manual I have found that my body doesn't react the same way and I often experienced high BG reading after the gym or football though the rwadings crashed later.

Its a tricky one this exercise business..........

If you have carbs and the corresponding insulin in your system at the time of the exercise, you would expect the glucose in your blood stream to be utilized then your muscles would start using their supplies to fuel themselves........

Does this fuel store from the muscle have to enter the blood stream?

Is it used directly, therefore eliminating the need for insulin?

If you have eaten your meal, would you still not need the unadjusted dose of QA to allow the glucose from the meal pass through into the cells? So why a reduction before the activity.......?

I really dont have a clue to be honest.............!! Laughing

Test directly before, during (to ascertain if a hypo is happening) and after for 2-3 classes. Also check your BI level as well. If that is ok, its possible that a small exercise bolus may be needed (0.5-1 unit).

I'm a professional personal trainer and I work with a lot of diabetics so I've seen similar problems before. Take logical steps and you'll figure out where the issue is. Very Happy

When you say check your BI to see if its OK, what do you mean................

My understanding, depending on duration and intensity of the activity, your BI may have to be adjusted before the activity and possibly after...........is this what you mean by right, as in, properly adjusted for the envisaged activity...

Check BI, as in carb free meal. Its probably fine, just being thorough and making sure that the rise isn't caused by a lack of background insulin. Is the class at a time where you may be reaching the tail end of your lantus/levemir?

And you're correct, BI may need adjustment but I've usually found that adjusting QA is a better method in terms of pre/post exercise levels. Given that you are doing the class before dinner, I'm assuming that it will have been some time since your previous meal and so there will be relatively little QA in your system. The steep rise indicates it may be quite an intense class for you and is causing a lot of cortisol to be released into your system. If the BI is good, then we're back looking at a small exercise bolus. Simple case of eliminating possible causes.

Above all though dont shy away from exercise because of the work it requires. The benefits massively outweigh the effort you have to put in. Wink
