Hello site members,

Take a look to the right of your screen. If you are logged in you should see an orange box containing, amongst other things, 'BG Diary'. If you are a DAFNE Graduate (and the site recognizes you as one) then you should also see a link to the 'DAFNE Course Handbook'. If you can see this and are a DAFNE Graduate then... Fantastic - your registration on the site is OK.

If you are a Graduate and cannot see the link to the DAFNE Course Handbook, then the site doesn't know that you are a DAFNE Graduate and therefore won't give you access to the handbook. This is because material in the handbook is potentially dangerous if used by someone who isn't DAFNE trained. To get access do the following:

Get in touch with your DAFNE Educators. They have been prompted to register on this site as HCPs (HealthCare Professionals) via an email straight from DAFNE Central. This gives them the ability to generate a code for their particular DAFNE Centre, which is then to be distributed to their Graduates. Please note this code is unique to DAFNE Online and is no way related to the centre codes from DAFNE Central.

Once you have got the code from your educators, click the 'Settings' link at the top of the site. There, about halfway down, you will see a DAFNE Centres section. First of all, select your DAFNE Centre from the drop-down box; these are sorted into regions then alphabetically for your convenience. Then, enter the code given to you by your Educator into the 'Centre Code' box. Finally, click 'Update Centre' and, all being well, you should now see a link to the DAFNE Course Handbook on the right hand side of the site.

You may receive the centre code in the format of an A4 invitation flyer, if this is the case then you don't need to follow the instructions to create a new account if you already have one - just use the code in the flyer in the instructions above. It will work.

If you have any questions or comments on this process, then post them here.

Thanks,

Simon

Hello! I did DAFNE a long time ago at the QMC, back when there were only about 4 centres in the whole country! I'd really like access to the diary, but I have moved house about 3 times since and am no longer in contact with the QMC team. Have you got any advice on how I can access this?

I am in a similar position in that I am really keen to look at the the course handbook. I have recently completed the BIANCA course at my local hospital (North Hampshire). I would also like to know how to gain access to the handbook.

Thanks

Jess,
If you can remember who your dAFNE educator was or when you did the course we might be able to cross reference it with DAFNE
Central and give you access i.e change your account status to graduate. Why do we need to do this, see my response to John below.

John,
I'm really sorry but we cannot give you access to the handbook at the moment. I appreciate you don't get to choose what Diabetes Education course you do and it sounds a bit 'them' and 'us', but we are only allowed to provide access to validated DAFNE Graduates.
Why is this ? Well amonst other things, there is concern that non DAFNE people will try to use information in the handbook without the backup of a DAFNE Educator and do themselves harm. I know there are some that do not agree with this and think eveyone should be treated as though they are capable of managing without DAFNE Educators. Unfortunately this is not a risk DAFNE Central or DAFNEOnline are prepared to take.
In addition DAFNE Central are concerned about 'variations' on DAFNE like BIANCA. The point of DAFNE is it is rigidly based on the original german version and has a very tight management scheme of the DAFNE Educators. All DAFNE courses should be pretty much identical in course content regardless of where they are run, the educators are also all trained the same and are audited every year. This means the course meets all the NHS criteral for Diabetes Education and is consistent.
Unfortunately PCT variations do NOT have this kind of control or management and are often cut down versions of DAFNE. This may mean what are considered vitial elements are missed out. I appreicate this doesn't help you and I would like to be able to help, however we have to stick to the rules laid down by DAFNE Central since we work so closely with them. If the situation changes we will let you know.

Hi Marke, I actually found my handbook! I didn't find it necessary to write anything like dates or names in it though, mores the pity. It says May 2003 on the front though! I've also found some emails from course-mates from March 2004, so I think it was Feb 2004, and I know they only had one course per month at the time. Dont' know if that is enough info for you!

Jess,
I have contacted DAFNE Central about 'verifying' you as a graduate, as soon as I have a result I will let you know.

nk2965, if you contact us via the link at the bottom of this ( and every page), telling us your full name and the dates you attended the course ( as accurately as you can) we then contact DAFNE central who contact the former DAFNE Educators who ran the course to check you are a graduate. This site doesn't directly contact DAFNE Educators/HCP's for a DAFNE Centre since they already have enough to cope with. When contacted by DAFNE Central they usually provide an answer quite quickly and this is then relayed back to us. We are aware of the issue of centres that 'leave the family' and are trying to find a solution ( other than threats of violence to make them rejoin ;^) )
