Hi,
Been to see my Diabetic Specialist Nurse today she mentioned to me about the book carbs & cals which i've just ordered. Just wondered what anybody elese on here thinks about my results. I'm VERY confused about all this ratio thing. Never been on a DAFNE course as i just don't have the time but i find logging my results on here and browsing the forums very interesting and would like to try and learn from my new book.

Hi, Sorry but this information is not really going to help anybody. Thats not a criticism of you, its just the idea of DAFNE is you match your insulin intake to the carbs that you eat. Since you haven't provided any insulin details its a bit like watching a film without the sound its not easy to work out what is going on. One of the key things taught on the course is to look for patterns in your readings based on your insulin intake. We also have no idea what insulin regime you are on e.g most of us inject Quick Acting before each meal and take one or two Background Insulin injections. Pre DAFNE I was on an insulin mix twice a day which would not have really worked with DAFNE.
So I'm sure lots of people will be happy to give you advice but they will probably need a bit more info to do so. If nothing else regularly recording you BG is a good thing and will help you in the long run. Do you know if there are DAFNE courses in your area ?

If you go here you will find an on-line course provided by Bournemouth Diabetes and Endocrine Centre, this is the closest thing to DAFNE you will find, but still not exactly DAFNE, which is what you would need to know to come and discuss it here and get the answers you deserve with your blood results........

Just from looking at your results it seems you are waking up on the low side a few times, so my first question would be.................is your background insulin right, it may be too much overnight, resulting in lows, but it could be a multitude of other things..............

What insulin are you on...............

Also try the diabetes support website here, here you will find other diabetics, both type 1 and 2 with lots of advice and stories to help you on your battle to conquer the diabetes..............

Hi,
Firstly may i say thank you for your reply. It's the first time i've ever entered into the forums on here hence why i probably only entered my diary results and no other details ie which insulin i'm on. I'm on Humalog (QA) ~ 5 -6u at breakfast, 10u at lunch, 12-14u at dinner then Lantus (BI) 34u at bedtime. Thank you so much for the links to www.bdec-e-learning.com & www.diabetessupport.co.uk both of which i will certainly be using alongside DAFNE.

Hi Marke,
Thanks for the reply. It's the first time i've entered anything into the forums which is probably why i didn't put any insulin details. I'm on Humalog (QA) before breakfast, lunch & dinner then Lantus (BI) at bedtime.

Hi there Daveyboy,
Thank you for your reply. You're very lucky being able to go on a DAFNE course & like you say you've learnt all about the ratios, hypos, tablets etc, maybe you could teach me about this ratio thing and the way it's all written down ie 1:1, 0.5:1, 3:1 etc when i see it all on here on the forums. The book i bought looks excellent if i could maybe learn how to use it and maybe alongside my diabetic specialist nurse who i go to see at my gp surgery. They don't do a dafne course in Warrington & i don't have the time to be travelling miles away to one or to be staying away from home due to family ie hubby, daughter & son. I guess i'll just have to carry on trying to learn from the forums on here.

The 1-1 and 2-1 etc on hear is 1 unit of insulin to what is cauled 1 carb on all the packets of food there is a carbohydrate value like on the bread it will say per 100g and then per slice on the Burgen bread it is 38.5g per 100g and 15.4g per slice divided by 10 so 15.4 is 1.54 so on a 1-1 ratio that would be 1.5 units of Humalog or to the nerast unit so 1 unit or 2 units of insulin.
Ilike you was on a fixed dose for years but now chance depending on what I am eating.I wason 26 units of Lantus at night and with what I was told on DAFNE I am now on 10 units I did not know that I was hypoing through night but now things are a lot better.
I am on a ratio of 2.5-1 1.5-1 and 1-1 and then the Lantus 10 units. Hope that helps a bit but it would be better if you went on DAFNE Rolling Eyes
